    @@yellowcard8100 OK at best? I'm not comparing it to 'The Thing', perhaps the greatest sci-fi horror ever made (that or Alien). As a piece of Lovecraftian terror, it's brilliant. The fact that you would refer to it as cheesy, tells me that it was a little above your head. This isn't just me stating that it's a great film. When comparing it to a lot of other Carpenter films, it is easily superior in the writing. To each their own.

    There's a novelization for Escape From New York as well, which fills in some things about the setting and lore, you can find a .pdf of it if you look around online. Do they still do novelizations of movies these days, or are movies always based on books and comics now, and it'd be redundant?

    @@0neDoomedSpaceMarine There'll always be novelisations of popular movies because there'll always be a market for them; even movies already based on books have had them. The quality's very hit-and-miss, though, as you can imagine. Part of the appeal is that the author's generally working from an earlier version of the script and so fills in details that were edited out of the finished product. On rare occasions, a novelisation is actually better than the film, like Dennis Etchison's haunting, autumnal, paganistic take on Halloween II.

    My favorite bit in Memoirs of an Invisible Man is when he demonstrates on camera that he really is invisible by chewing some bubble gum, a clever bit of stop motion animation. It also has a lot of early invisible nan CGI, which is hit-or-miss.

    That's the first time they really did a great job of showing invisibility with depth as far as the effects go. Previously if someone was wearing bandages who was invisible, you wouldn't see the other side (the bandages on the back of their head) as they were unwrapped. Memoirs did this in a bunch of cases like where you see floating tennis clothes as he's playing. The objects actually have volume instead of just being cut out. Hollow Man took it to the next level a decade later.

It's the fact that if they hadn't tried to screw him over or if the president wasn't actively about to murder his own daughter Snake might not have done it. It's that final act of betrayal and savagery that sends him over the edge. Even after everything Snake has been through and seen he still gave one final chance for humanity to redeem itself and they failed it. Plus, the shot of Snake's cigarette fading into the darkness is a badass shot. Snake'll be fine in the new world, it's everyone else that's fucked.

    Yeah, I agree a lot. I also want to say that, it wasn't just that Manhattan had become so unbelievably shitty, but it was because the Cold War went hot and World War 3 had happened. Manhattan was struck by a nerve gas attack by the Soviets, the nerve gas driving the residents completely shitmad, thus the effort to wall the city off and turning the island into a prison colony. There were many prominent cities both on the US side and the Soviet side which had seen similar fates from weapons of mass destruction. The reason Snake wears an eyepatch is that in a battle with the Soviet Union, the US employed poison gas, and Snake's gasmask didn't seal properly. I think this was actually even done without warning, hence why Snake feels so betrayed, for his lost comrades and for his lifelong scar and disability. I really like the semi-apocalyptic nature of the setting of Escape From New York, where the world hasn't been turned into Mad Max or Fallout, but everything really went to shit anyway and mankind is in some really dark days. That's actually why I feel split about the ending to Escape From Los Angeles, because that takes it full into apocalyptic territory (even though it's kind of justified).

  • @stranger59

    @stranger59

    @@0neDoomedSpaceMarine I think it's a great natural conclusion in part because as a semi-apocalypse, those in power stay in power as the world still falls into ruin. Those at the top played the fiddle while the world burned, but still got to keep playing after. They never were stuck on the level everyone else had to suffer. Snake just does a Thanos to make everything "balanced", i.e. everyone is screwed, and no one is above feeling how bad it really is. You know Snake won't live to see the world get any better... but maybe it will, maybe it won't.

    9:58 You're exactly right about Vampires having lots of improv. In the commentary track on (at least) the DVD, they admit to a lot of Wood's best lines being improv. Apparently the deal he had with Carpenter was that he would give Carpenter one satisfactory take to script, and then he got to do a few takes where he made up his own shit. Turned out he had a pretty good take on the character.

    Ever read the Stephen King novella The Running Man? The character's name and the fact that it's a game show that tries to kill you are the only things they kept for the movie. The original book didn't even take place in a contained building, he was just supposed to roam the USA and mail in a videotaped "letter" once a day. If any citizen spotted him they'd phone it in and a kill squad would try to track him down. Always hated it when movies buy the rights to a book just to use the title and the author's name. Mainly because it prevents someone else from making an actual movie of the book.
