    Oath Breaker's Aura of Hate - charisma modifier also gets added to THEIR OWN damage rolls as well. -I missed this while playing an 11th level one -who ended up two weapon fighting ironically enough. Animate dead was not very useful in combat, they just get destroyed in 1 aoe by the time you get them. They were good as minions for stumbling into the traps and providing flanking if you use it -or the help action if you don't. And permanent stoneskin at 15th level is nothing to scoff at. If anything I think those are the best 2 features. I think cha is a better secondary stat to have and just leave con at 14 for a while. If starting with 16 cha I would get str and cha to 18 before getting 20 strength, because aura of protection is huge just by itself. -Con might be more valuable to you though if you're using an oath with less charisma synergy like Vengeance, Glory and Watcher. -I'd still want at least 16 cha though. Edit: Oath of the Crown, seriously dude?

  • @jcdenton2187

    @jcdenton2187

    Yeah I was certainly shocked when he opened up saying the Oathbreaker was the worst Paladin subclass. Oathbreaker is a damage MONSTER by 7th level and that gets compounded further by permanent 1d8 extra damage from the base Paladin features. The minions thing is really more to get you a couple meatshields once in awhile which is only an upside, and Control Undead is arguably so much better than Turn Undead from Clerics because it caps at CR 20 monsters and means you can potentially get a very powerful Undead at your side, and you don't even have to extend any action economy of your own once it's under your control. I think he very much underestimated the Oathbreaker, I'd consider it either high A or an S Tier class. And uh... Oath of the Crown is just bad unfortunately

    Correction on the beginning: you mention that Paladin Oath spells are better than Cleric Domain spells because they "don't come from the Paladin spell list." That's very true! Buuuuut a lot of Cleric domain spells don't come from the Cleric spell list either (see Tempest and Light for a lot of great non-Cleric spells). Other than that, you make a lot of good points, though I do think you have to make a distinction between going for offensive vs defensive. Ancients Paladin is possibly the best defensive class in the game because of its level 7 aura, while Vengeance is AMAZING for 1v1 battles. All in all, good video man. Earned a sub

    @@Jetpack7 The Oath of Ancients Aura of Warding is phenomenal! Giving the entire party resistance to all spells is an immensely potent buff, especially when coupled with Aura of Protection. This particular oath is better than the others in one major way, and that is battlefield control. Their Channel Divinity allows for restraining, while their Turn the Faithless frightens fey and fiends. The most overlooked benefits of this ability are that it reveals shape shifted forms and negates magical concealment entirely! Illusion, blur, etc, all negated without a saving throw. That's always useful. While the Oath of Redemption has slightly better oath spells, the Ancients paladin gets multiple bases covered. Speak with Animals and Commune with Nature give the paladin rare access to divination and information gathering. Moonbeam and Ice Storm afford the paladin crowd control, and uses their oft neglected concentration slot. Couple that with the Auras of Warding and Protection, your concentration saving throws against losing spells is very high. This particular oath opens up a rare path, that of a primary caster paladin. Equipped with a high charisma, and a few cantrips, this paladin is built for tanking and support. In addition to all of this, being able to automatically survive an instant kill once per long rest is nothing to scoff at. Only the Oath of Vengeance beats this subclass's ability to move around the battlefield, albeit marginally so. Their capstone ability, Elder Champion, quickens their paladin spells, and grants disadvantage against their spells and Channel Divinity abilities. This really grants credence to this being the high charisma, spellcasting focused paladin. A spellcaster in heavy armor, with spell resistance, and up to a +5 or more on all of their saving throws. This paladin can stand amidst a host of enemies, and burn them all with a single casting of Moonbeam and tank at the same time.

  • @Jetpack7

    Steph Hanley these are all good points! Definitely an argument to put it higher than I’ve placed it! I hadn’t really considered giving this Paladin the opportunity to be a primary caster because that takes away one of the paladin’s primary features of divine smite. My only issue with this is that at this point you’re basically playing a half-caster Cleric! There are several cleric archetypes that grant heavy armor proficiency, have a wider and more potent spell selection and more powerful (and a larger quantity of) channel divinities. With the addition of a feat, the concentration checks would be no issue at all! I think Divine Smite really sets the Paladin apart from other classes, and sending one down the route of a primary caster detracts from one of their most potent strengths! THAT SAID, I love your build idea and I’m tempted to try it. Thanks so much for the discourse 😁

    - The devotion is one of my favoirate. dont understimate a charisma boos to attack rolls using great weapon master and maybe concentrating on bless and you would rarely miss with that -5 modifier. Yes an action to aply is too ruthless and I do wish we could use our spell slots to use channel devinity just like the Variant Rule UA where you can use a channel divinity to get a level 1 spell slot. the devosion is my go to to multiclass with hexblade. the imune to charm is a life saver and the protection of good and evil read the spell .... it works on ALL the types :D you can choose ... so choose them all. protection from good and evil is busted as an always on but as a spell its short duration and concentration make it a less viable choice. - Ancients is lack luster for thier channel divinity but everything else is ok the spells and the resistance to spels. the death word is laughable tbh. anythign that return you to 1 hp once and not at least 20 means you are dead in a multi attack situation. - conquest paladin is busted. we had a paladin survived a 400 damage attack because of thier level 20 channel. their level 20 capstone might be the strongest most nova. its a bummer that they rely on fear too much many big monsters are immune to fear. and again if you can use a spell slot to use channel divinity you would have seen the guided strike get sued more often you cant smite what you cant strike :D ... - glory ... such a disappointing from the UA heroisim its really REALLY weak, the temp smite doesnt scale good too swingy. the aura is STUPID small and that they must start in the aura ... really really oversight. the level 15 ability being removed from an always on reaction to a number of times a day is a big nerf. yet another Subclass that got butchered from UA to print. look at you hexblade. - ... REALLY the crown ??!!! it is super noterios for being one of the weakest paladins out there ...

    I play a vengeance paladin and you missed a lot of class features that do buff the party. This is listed on pages 84 and 85 of the Players' Handbook and it should be noted that these are "class features", in other words you get these features regardless of your sacred oath. You only need to be a paladin. These are the paladin class features on pages 84 and 85 of the players' handbook: Divine Sense Lay on Hands Fighting Style (choose one at 2nd level) Spellcasting Spellcasting Ability (Charisma for paladins) Spellcasting Focus (see chapter 5, "equipment") Divine Smite (available at 2nd level) Divine Health (at level 3, all paladins are immune to disease) Sacred Oath (at level 3, you choose an oath that decides what kind of paladin your character is) Ability Score Improvement (for paladins you gain 2 points to assign to modifiers or option to pick a feat at lvl 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19) Extra Attack (5th level feature) Aura of Protection (at 6th level whenever you or a friendly creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a bonus equal to your charisma modifier while you are conscious. The range of this aura increases to 30 feet at 18th level. Aura of Courage ( at 10th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can not be frightened while you are conscious). Improved Divine Smite (at 11th level all of your melee attacks deal an extra 1d8 radiant damage. If you use your divine smite this bonus damage is also added to the damage of the divine smite.) Cleansing Touch (at 14th level, you can use your action to end one spell on yourself or one willing creature that you touch.) You get these by just being a paladin, anything listed in the various oath types is in addition to this list.

    Aura of Hate: “it’s just kind of super niche....” Aura of Hate Starting at 7th level **** YOU ****, as well any fiends and undead within 10 feet of you, gain a bonus to melee weapon damage rolls equal to your Charisma modifier... Only the peripheral benefits are niche. So, your damage modifier is STR + CHA. That’s actually a pretty good ability on its own. All the extra zombie damage is just a bonus. An Oathbreaker should focus on high Str and high Cha (not only for the extra damage, but for those saving throws for their other abilities). Wear plate armor and make Dex and Int your dump stats. This is very doable! I don’t play this or any other Paladin, so I’m not being an Oathbreaker fanboy - but you’re way underrating this one.

    So that extra 10ft of movement is actually really useful for getting in range to hit your enemy. Also, lets be real here smites are awesome, and war cleric should have gotten access to at least one.

    Not sure man. Once I had and argument with my friend, and we let this to be settled by our characters. He was 20 lv vengeance paladin when I was 20 lv rune knight fighter. Well from our DM when we end up, we destroyed whole village and almost one big city ( it was new camping, made by him ) and I was the one who stand up victorious, to be clear, yes he used his 20 lv ability ( Angel of vengeance ) and almost all his spellslots and I used my 1x cloud giant, 1x Hill giant and 1x storm giant rune ,2x my giants might and once action serge. He survived only by our wizard and bard that convinced me to spare him.

    I appreciate your philosophy to use Paladins in a more supportive role, but I must respectfully disagree with your assessment on the Crown Paladin. The subclass suffers from quite a bit of issues, especially once you dive into the details. Like you said, none of the Paladin subclasses are really weak, but I can't say the Crown shines much either. - Lvl 3: Turn the Tide - it's important to note the description says "that can hear you within 30 feet" - by RAW - someone who's unconscious is unaware of their surroundings. So unless you can convince a DM to rule it as such, technically you can't use this ability to bring your allies out of unconsciousness, which IMO is the greatest value of Healing Word and similar abilities in the first place (since the amount heal isn't huge). - Lvl 7: Divine Alliegance is just a worst version of the Oath of Redemption's lvl 7, which does the same thing but has a longer range and extends to 30' by level 18. - Lvl 15: Stun advantage is situational but very good, but the paralysis advantage is somewhat unnecessary when you'd probably want Freedom of Movement anyway (which is non-concentration). Still, good to have. - Lvl 20: The Wisdom saving throw adv. is mostly redundant with Hero's Feast, which a level 20 party should be using in abundance. Death Saving throws don't really happen at level 20 - people will either die from multi-hits once unconscious, or someone will pop them up with a healing word before the initiative goes around for the save to actually happen. If by some chance it does, what they gain out of advantage is almost minuscule, since they already add the +CHA to save from your aura (and with a level 20 CON mod, it should be a very easy DC 10 save even without proficiencies).

    Compared to EVERY class, there are NO bad choices for Paladin subclasses compared to a lot of other classes. The base class it self is already strong and well built. It can tank, heal, and deal loads of damage. A Barbarian can tank and deal loads more damage but needs sustain to stay alive, Fighters can do almost everything a Paladin can, but falls short on sustain and healing, Clerics has a lot more healing and support since they are a full caster, but they can't out tank and out damage a Paladin Not to mention the aura effects Paladins provide for the party. And your Aura is on 24/7, no spell slots needed. No other class has a passive skill that is always active the helps the party by providing buffs or debuffs to the enemies. Paladins can just pick a role they want and stick to that. Already have a healer in the party? You'll be tanking in the front and doubling up on healing. Already have a beefy tank? Support that tank by healing and dealing to enemies faster. You have an amazing DPS doing loads of damage. Why not flank so that DPS can get advantage and deal more damage, and if one of you crits, you can show off how crazy strong you are too by unloading all your smite spells into the thing. BTW this is just BASE Paladin, no subclass features. Also level 20 cap stone skill for each subclass just makes any Paladin more versatile. So yes, it's a strong class over all. Strongest base class compared to every other class in 5E.

    Okay I'm speaking as a expert on Paladin class I've played every archetype of paladin to 20th level in my opinion your list was right on some parts but way off from others. Here's my rankings and why for Paladins. Give me a thumbs up if you agree if this gets 100 thumbs up I'll look into making a video explaining my list. 8. Oath of the Crown the weakest capstone except for advantage on death saves. The only good thing about this archetype is Spirit Guardians 7. Oath of Conquest. {let me explain first} capstone is great but the main strength of this class being fear based is the main weakness of the class. If the campaign is ending before 10th level then this is a great class, however at higher level most enemies either have advantage vs fear or is immune to it. Which is why it's ranked 6th. 6. Oathbreaker (Talk to your DM about playing one) Necromancer spells are limited, it's 15th level ability sucks but the ability to control undead and to give yourself and undead you control a bonus to damage equal to your charisma modifier turn the tides capstone excellent. 5. Oath of Vengeance. (Don't hurt me on this one) great archetype amazing the reason why it's dead center is it's more of a solo minded paladin, great auras, good capstone, and other abilities which is meant to go 1v1 versus the big bads. 4. Oath of Redemption arguably one of the best non violent classes there is.great for the support paladin and the tank who's main actions is I use compelled duel on a enemy and then uses action to dodge High AC plus disadvantage to hit makes this a Defensive archetype 3. Oath of Glory Paladin Party friendly good auras (who couldn't benefit from movement) good channels and Gloriou Defense not only great to add to defense of not only yourself but ally who's in trouble but also a free attack as a reaction if it misses and an amazing capstone. A solid 3rd place 2. Oath of Devotion the stereotypical Paladin takes 2nd place in my opinion. Strong Auras Immunity to Charms, the ability to turn undead and fiends as well as giving yourself a magic weapon for a minute that adds Charisma to attack so if you wanted to max of your charisma take a great sword using the -5to atk +10 to DMG your able to with no penalties plus perminate Protection from good and evil at 15th level is powerful, and who can argue with 10pt of radiant damage to all enemies no saves every turn time it right as a scourge Aasimar you can to 20points of radiant damage. 1. Oath of the Ancients LEVEL 7 RESISTANCE TO SPELL DAMAGES ENOUGH SAID. Free death ward, and a great capstone this is the only archetype that my DM banned me from playing after DM casted meteor swarm my paladin had stone skin activated used his reaction to cast absorb elements (I got it via feat Magical Initiate) made the save and out of all that only took 5 points of damage.enough said. This is the best archetype Paladin is a S-tier class there is nio terrible archetypes for this class so take that oath at Level 1 and follow that oath to receive the benefits at Level 3. Just don't shove your beliefs down the party's throats.

  • @Mateking92

    Your DM (and you) should read the rules again, Stoneskin doesn't protect you from spell damage at all, and resistances doesn't stack either (PHB 197: ,,Multiple instances of resistance or vulnerability that affect the same damage type count as only one instance. For example, if a creature has resistance to fire damage as well as resistance to all nonmagical damage, the damage of nonmagical fire is reduced by half against the creature, not reduced by three-quarters."). Meteor swarm deals 40d6, so even if a miracle occurs and your DM throws 40 1's, and you make your DEX save, AND you have resistance to spell dmg, it's still 10 points of dmg.
