Ranking ALL ATLA animals by REALISM ft. Alien Evolution (Part 2)

Ойын-сауық

This video is the second part of a two-part series examining every animal in avatar: the last airbender based on how plausible they would be as animals in our world. The first video can be found on Alien Evolution, the link to that will be provided here.

    Something notable about the messenger hawks is unlike messenger pigeons which have to be taken somewhere and return messages one way by releasing them to returning home, messenger hawks seem to be intelligent enough to know of multiple locations and can be commanded to travel between these locations. Sokka's messenger hawk Hawky was even capable of taking a message from Toph to the Beifong family, a destination it must surely have not been trained to deliver to prior to this. This suggests a remarkable intelligence and problem solving ability making them one of the most intelligent non-spirit animals in the Avatar world.

  • @AspenAspires

    @AspenAspires

    That is a very good point! The messenger Hawks in the show have to be really intelligent due to their ability to memorize multiple locations and return to their owner, and I could see an argument for these animals being the smartest non-human animals (excluding the spirits of course)

    I think Cow Hippo sizes can be explained by domestification. They may also not be native to the Fire Nation since they are shown in the Earth Kingdom in TLOK.

    One of the few tier lists where the mid-tiers are far more interesting than the top and bottom tiers. I think turtle ducks could possibly be turtles that evolved feathers from theit scales and bills instead of beaks, but it still feels like a stretch.

    The fire nation megafauna could be explained by island gigantism. AFAIK, they're much larger than most IRL examples of island gigantism, but if they naturally maintain fairly low population densities, they could work. To me, the biggest problem with the cow-hippo is that their heads, and especially their muzzles, are ao damn big.

    I just wanted to note that for the fire nation animals that you called “too big” can still make sense. Although generally, insular dwarfism is the case for many animals, insular gargantuism can be too, just look at the new Zeland Moa for example. Additionally, if you look at the map, the largest fire nation island looks almost as large as the northern or southern water tribe and could be comparable to Australia in size. In the past, Australia has had megafauna such as the marsupial lion and the “combat wombat” that have only gone extinct in the last 200,000ish years. Given those facts, I think these animals being large shouldn’t knock them down a whole level

    have you considered that cow hippos are a species imported to the archipelago by the ancestors of the fire nation? This happened with horses and cattle from France to Britain and Ireland, and even to the Shetlands and Faroes with sheep. May I also say the dragon moose looks a lot like the traditional chinese unicorn, known as the qilin

  • @AspenAspires

    @AspenAspires

    Ай бұрын

    For the dragon moose fact that’s interesting! Cow hippos being non-native makes a lot of sense as humans bring domestic animals all over the place, even to small islands where they would never get there in the wild

    That could be a valid concern, but the island critters are seemingly equal in size to mainland fauna, which insular giants rarely get to. Dodos in many was were insular giants but they’re not the size of ostriches

    @@AspenAspiresit could be due to domestication. The fire nation actively farms them and would likely breed for larger size. The cow hippo probably doesn’t reach that size in the wild or with those numbers, but can achieve it thanks to human assistance. Like how cows now are different to wild bovines

    A fun/nightmare fact. While there aren't any spiders that have wings, there are spiders that use statically charged strings/parachutes to catch the wind and glide to new places, sometimes causing a rain of spiders. Where? Australia, of course.

    Never heard about insular gigantism Many of the fire nation island are very big, too big for insular dwarfism to be a thing it's common for many species to get giant size on island because There little to no predator or competition. Especially for komodo rhino, as they are cold blooded they need WAY less food to survive.

  • @AspenAspires

    @AspenAspires

    27 күн бұрын

    Komodo rhino has a great point but insular gigantism goes only so far as a population needs to sustain itself and if they get too big they can’t get enough food. That’s why the largest mammals native to Australia are Kangaroos and the Hawaiian islands don’t have large native species

    @@AspenAspires Today In the past australia had 6 m long komodo dragon, giant kangaroo and rhino sized wombat. As well as giant birds. Beside Australia is WAY too Big for insular Dwarfism, it's an entire continent, Heck even Madagascar is too Big. Hawai used to have ground sloth the size of pigs and large crocodiles and child sized owl. Even Mediterranean small island used to have mini hippo and elephant, as well as giant Swan and owl. New zaeland had 3m tall bird and giant eagles Beside all of these species have been domesticated by fire nation They feed them, breed them, explaining their large noumber as well as their large size, probably larger than their wild relative, as their bred for meat or as mount for war And most of fire nation island seem to be quite big, maybe UK sized and iceland sized for most, then some great large one as main island being probably larger than Spain, Ukraine or France.
