I like the motivation of a ranger who has beasts as a favored enemy not because of anything that they've done, but because he's just really good and understanding their animal instincts. And he doesn't kill them out of duty but because civilization had pushed out their natural predators and they're growing too fast. Also, he ships any captured beasts off to his family land for further study and public education.

I like the idea of each ranger subclass being like the different schools in the witcher series, all part of the same organisation but with different styles and areas to protect/observe. They have secret fortresses far from civilization where apprentices learn the basics before going out with a master and finally getting their own territory to look after. I imagine they could even be a private organisation funding themselves by selling pelts and other bits of creatures to wizards and such.

I've had an idea for a ranger ever since watching The Brother's Grimm. A charlatan Monster Slayer who goes around preying on the lack of expertise about the supernatural from village to village, but when it comes down to actual big bad monsters knows his shit. He may not even always stand up to them because he knows exactly how dangerous it can be. Always go for the easy payday but can be dragged along, kicking and screaming, by a sufficiently good party when shit really hits the fan. Rangers being this ultimate scion of good and virtue always kind of bugged me. Maybe there is a real reason they don't interact with people: they just don't get along with them at all.

I have a player at my table whom has a Genasi Horizon Walker, and it made sense. A half-elemental raise by his Djinn mother to watch the horizon for their Efreeti enemies. He then found the thin membranes between places to scout and watch whom might next attack his beloved flying city of silver, and protects his home with an enchanted musket infused with elemental power. He's a great character who has no room for the petty politics of single-plane mortals.

I’m soon to play a Tabaxi Ranger... from Undercliff, who has lived in Waterdeep since childhood. He can handle the woods, but he’s just at home in the city of wonders, familiar with its secrets, its rooftops, its famous alleys and its denizens. I took the Urchin background, and another player is his sickly Sorceror brother (Criminal background). The DM is letting me treat the city as wilderness. Reading about Waterdeep and immersing myself in it is thrilling. And my player-brother is a bona fide edgy genius, so naturally we gave ourselves adoptive halfling parents who named us “Scamper Damper” and “Snowball.” I never thought I’d be so excited about an anthropomorphic animal character.

Yes the Ranger's Apprentice series was a pretty good series and the ranger's magic which was precieved as magic by the common folk that didnt have the understanding was just cleaver sleight of hand and slieght of eyes. They also had understanding of the world and how things work like when Will's sneaks into the castle in the trees and he waits for the wind to rustle the leaves before moving would be considered pass with a trace or some other stealth magic.

MrFForger With his trick arrows wouldn’t The Green Arrow be closer to an arcane Archer. An arcane archer/shadow monk . Those two classes I think would be needed to make a Green Arrow . Or at least that is how I would do that .

I would absolutely love to play a horizon walker as a sort of planar Gypsy, travelling through the different planes, collecting odd trinkets and telling fortunes with his planar Tarot Deck. Also Horizon Walker is somewhat viable for a throwing weapons based character, you can now finally play as Gambit in D&D!

As a matter of fact, urban rangers are covered in Ruty Rutenberg's Xanatharis Lost Notes to Everything Else ( Rutenberg is of Maze Arcana fame and is the Lead Designer of said book.) It's a companion book to Xanathar's and has a greatcollection of new subclasses and background and lore stuff. He included the Dragoon and Divine Herald featured in Maze Arcana. You guys should check that out and maybe hit on some of those options. Thanks! Love you guys and all your vids. I lived in Killeen TX for 6 years when my dad was stationed at Ft. Hood. We went to Austin quite a few times and it's an awesome city. I was born in Jax FL but will always consider myself a TEXAN!!! One of my favorite characters is ranger that hunts flying whales from the deck of an airship. With spells like zephyr strike, jump, and hunter's mark, he launches himself off the airship to attach lines to the sky-whales. As he picked up the skills he needed to efficiently and effectively track and hunt massive, resilient animals, he picked up all of the ranger skills and spells.

I especially loved the segue regarding cosmic stuff towards the end. When I was a kid we just BARELY scatched the surface of stuff like that. I remember when the Immortals Rules came out I was pumped and wanted to try it, but by then my circle of friends was moving on to other stuff. Yer talk there really reminded me how much I would enjoy some Jim Starlin Warlock-esque settings and some Lovecraftian Old One mindfuckery in a game. However in retrospect that's a really tall order for most DM's.

My favorite concept of a ranger type character are the Rangers of the book series: Rangers Apprentice. It’s a essentially a no magic environment where the closest it gets is a oathbreaker mind dominates an entire race of what might as well be gnolls. Anyways imagine there’s 50 rangers most around level 10 or so, and say the best of the best are from level 15-20. So essentially 50 Batman’s that work directly under the king. Surrounded by tons of superstition as it’s easier to do their job if they seem mystical. These 50 or so rangers might have among the total group around half as many initiates. The Ranger system is ranked too Bronze: apprentice/ initiate Silver: current member of the Corps Gold: retired/paperwork bound Oh and imagine them all having a non magical equivalent of the “cloak of elven kind”

This take on a ranger is heavily influenced by the John Snow character, which is absolutely fine; but there are many other ways to approach rangers :) From Tanis to Drizzt and of course Aragorn, there are many other archetypes to draw from. The urban ranger that comes to mind is basically the groundskeeper monster slayer that watches over the cemetery. Because this is D&D and a lot of crazy shit and creepy monsters like corpses, or are corpses, or make corpses into monsters, or want parts of the dead and so on. "Well, last night I had to put Mrs. Henderson to rest for the 4th time... I really need to find the bastard that keeps animating her. Then I had to chase away Bessie again, damn otyugh keeps sneaking up at night to snack on the really ripe ones down on the poor side, you know, where we dump the ones no one has claimed. Can't kill her either, because then I'd just have to burn all the bodies and that's just a waste. But she needs to be gone by morning or it turns into a whole mess with people screaming about the monster and suddenly there are adventurers all over my cemetery hunting for Bessie and looting the graves. We can't have that,, now can we?"

In a real medieval fantasy game, I love the idea of Rangers being the opposite of Bards. Bards who come from noble courts, who spread the news & song among the towns and villages, who represent the "voice of authority" - versus Rangers who come from the fields and the forests, who may be unwashed and rough, but who won't use a silver tongue to disguise the truth. That's good drama!

I've always enjoyed the ranger class, they can be played in so many ways good, shitty, ranged, skirmisher, jack of all trades its always something new. Even a dual wielding Drow ranger is actually fun to play. I tend to prefer the "guy with a trick up his sleeve, or one in his boot or under his hat" type character (Basically Jarlaxle). Give a ranger a portable hole and a cloak of useful items and pow, shenanigans aplenty. If your DM is down with multi classing even better so many little extras you can use in both combat and role play, Just makes the Ranger so easy to play. Now with all the extra sub-classes even more so.

He doesn't enjoy the work per say, but his companions at the time kept a cheery demenor. So the dark never bothered him. The rangers in my homebrew setting are split into 4 orders. The order of iron, which patrols and defends the frontiers, the order of oak, which works with druids to defend sacred groves and the like, the order of stone, who are expert surveyors, and direct the building of infrastructure, as well as patrolling roads, and the order of salt, which is essentially the coast guard. The ranger orders are technically outside the direct control of the Dominion's government and nobility, but they work closely with them at times

I think that there should be a nonmagical monster Slayer, I am less upset about the one we got now that you've pointed out the Witcher viewpoint, but I really have always wanted the ranger who can counter magic by practice and training instead of with magical talent, or the ranger who casts cure wounds as a ritual because they know how to patch you up with this berry, that vine flower and this leaf will stick to the skin rather than in the moment or with a premade kit. I want the Aragorn and VanHelsing rangers, cause we already have the Legolas and Geralt ones (yes I like the one from adventures in middle earth) hmm, you guys may have inspired me to finally put some love out there for my favorite class and finally post on the DM's guild. Thanks

My idea for a ranger is a Minotaur who came from a very expansive and rich metropolis that is built into, around and under a mountain. A sort of city state where Minotaurs, Goliaths and bird-like races like Kenku and arrakockera (idek if that's spelled right) along with Dueragar that they've allied with for prosperity. But the city is gone. Something came for this advanced society vibrant with diverse magic and martial ability that was very in tune with nature and decimated it to such a degree that only my pc survived. Who as a horizon walker chased after the extra planer entities that caused the devastation. And when they eventually find their way back. Time has moved much differently. Their city is an aincent ruin overgrown and forgotten. Their race is now feared and hunted by others. So my character is basically a bull person out of time and the view on the world is one that saddens them to see much of civilization has become disillusioned with nature and the respect it deserves and so many people they once shared a home with are treated much the same as his own. With Goliath being ostracized and Kenku being mistrusted. Not to mention that natural thin veils between other planes are much fewer and much farther between than they were. It's an idea that mightn't work so well in practice but I've come to like the more i think on it.

I really want to build a western style crossbow-slinger who is a multiclass between Assassin Rogue and Gloomstalker. The character is largely inspired by a large chunk of Johnny Cash's works combined with the quick draw one shot showdown at high noon. His desire to stay away from towns is mostly fuelled by folks not liking him and his previous brushes with the law.
