Actual tension in a hockey game?? You don't say. It's amazing how the fans love it. In juxtaposition to today, where any highlights I see, the buildings are empty.

I was at this game . My Dad , my bro , my friend and I got some seats near the glass by the Rangers end ( where the Zamboni I believe comes through ) . Good times. Nick if you are out there I hope you’re doing well . Susan Wagner Falcons.

That 96-97 rangers team was just stacked with talent and toughness Then they just shrunk to lower ranking shit for a long time

They should’ve beat the Flyers in 97 smh would’ve gave Detroit a much better run for their money than trash Lindros did! What kind of captain allows his team to be swept in the Stanley Cup final? Smh Lindros was all hype!

@@QueensNewYorkguy we matched up better vs the skilled Wings ( skilled Wings Vs Skilled Rangers in 97 would have been a great final ) . We actually handed them a solid defeat at the Garden only a few months prior in late March ( Rangers 3 Wings 1 ) . To be honest we shouldn’t have even dropped that semi final series versus the flyers as we blew way too many easy chances and still it was close in all the games . Man if we would’ve cashed in on only half of them we would have won and possibly Messier would have raised his last Cup in 1997. Then he left and we fell apart for years . The bad years.

Wow - loved Beukeboom but he was way overboard in his bout with Guerin Pounding his head into the ice then flailing his skate blades around near Guerin’s face and then wrapping his legs around his neck! Terrible!

So much passion and emotion between two hated rivals, by the way, is that the same Jason Smith who was captain of the Oilers later on in the mid 2000s? Just curious.

Wow thanks i forgot he worked his way to Captaining his own team 😮 amazing! Oilers got the best version of Jason Smith we had him when he was a baby but too many leaders and captains there already in Jersey with Stevens, Neidermayer, Daneyko, MacLean, Steve Thomas, Holik so it makes sense now why we let him go but we shouldn’t have just like we shouldn’t have let go of Billy Guerin and Brian Rolston, all players who blossomed into big time offensive players once they left the Devils mainly because the trap we played was holding them back! But that trap and their skills plus the development and explosiveness of Elias and Sykora a couple years after this game would’ve made the Devils unbeatable! Imagine a lineup of Arnott Sykora Elias Gomez Mogilny Guerin Rolston Holik John Madden Jay Pandolfo Sergei Brylin all in their prime? They’d win 4 Cups in a row like the Islanders did in the 80s!!! So we gotta admit that was one of the few terrible moves Devils management made in their Dynasty era!!

Monumental game right here lol my jaw dropped when Neidermayer was handed all of that! Cause he never got hit with all those penalties and misconducts and game misconducts ever again after this game! Size means nothing when you have the dog with the biggest fight and that was Scott Neidermayer! Still young with a chip on his shoulders despite winning a Stanley Cup the year prior but he wasn’t taking any crap from anybody! We didn’t need him to be tough we had Stevens and Daneyko and Peluso and Oliwa to beat people up but Neidermayer just enjoyed the rough stuff lol!! The NHL will never see another Scott Neidermayer ever again! I witnessed it as a Devils fan since the 1990s and haven’t seen it since he retired in the late 2000s after leading the Ducks to their only Stanley Cup in 2007 smh! That’s 4 Stanley Cups! 😮 He just flat out controlled the game whenever he was on the ice! I knew we were going to win every time i saw he was playing! Smoothest skating defenseman of all time!!

This is the beginning of the 96 / 97 season played Oct 30th 1996 . The Devils won it not the season before ( 1995 / 1996 ) but the season before that ( lockout shortened 94 / 95 season ) . In fact they missed the playoffs the year before this and we’re the first team since Montreal to not make the playoffs the year after winning the Cup .

That line - together- would never make it today in the generic and boring and lame NHL of today . I enjoyed it though as did you back then as did most real fans. Thank Bettman the Tribal NYC Lawyer for ruining the NHL .
