Ranger School: Eating an MRE in 5 Minutes

At the U.S. Army's Ranger School, more often than not, you'll only get 5 minutes to eat you MRE while out on patrols. And whatever you don't scarf down... becomes trash. So, it would be a benefit to see how its done. Hope this demonstration isn't only entertaining for you, but serves as a good lesson to prepare you even further for success.

Eating so fast that you barely take time to breathe and hardly taste the food. FINALLY, a skill that I know (and my wife would agree) that I could max with no training. Yes! LOL. It's good to know the airlines prepared me for something.

We were able to dump our beverage mix into our canteen (while the instructors weren't looking) which helped with hydration. We also would break the cracker into fourths and spread the cheese (or peanut butter) on them with the candy. A couple of quick chews, a little water, (not your mix water) then down the hatch. Also, a lot of time but not always, (we knew which MREs had them) there would be a small packet of salt, sugar, ketchup, instant coffee (sometimes coco) and creamer. We would dump the salt and sugar into our canteen, (hydration) suck down the ketchup (sugar) then mix a handful of instant coffee/coco and creamer with a mouthful of water for a caffeine rush. A lot of times we would hide the packets for later. Our instructors never really checked...of course, this was back in 1989. I remember having a couple of packets of coffee, coco and creamer. I mixed it with enough water to make a paste. It would get hard like a small candy bar. It was a perfect pick-me-up on that late night security post.

My first exposure to the MRE was on Fort Hood in 1983, We went on a 3-week FTX for the sole purpose of testing those nasty brown bags of $H!T then we were then surveyed about what we thought of them, Fortunately Myself like most of the other NCO's in the company had some spare cases of C-rations on board to make the 3 week deration. what I see today looked NOTHING like the ones we got in 1983!!! Shure did miss the Old C-ration with the Cigarettes and hot sauce then too!! lol now a non-smoker for 35 years. great content!

I guess at my age of 59 eating fast is the ONLY thing i wouldn't have a problem with at Ranger school lol. I'm not sure if i learned to eat fast in the Army but from the first week at basic (40yrs 6 months) until today people always say why do you eat so fast. I rarely chat at meals until finished. I always remember our NCO cadre at AIT ( They were basically sheep herders who ran morning PT then sent you to chow and on to class unlike today's Drill sgt's who do this) in a deep southern voice would say " Put down the rake (Fork) and pick up the shovel (Spoon). Never forgot that saying and it does work when your in a rush lol.

Rake for those who don't want to eat much. The rest of us use a shovel who care to get any food in. Rake is not worth even having in chow hall. You can learn to do without a lot. Calories is not one of those. In SF you would go through boxes and boxes of meals and pick out what you need for a mission so that you would not have to heat things and would have more calories for long marches. So many more lessons too.

SF will teach you NOT to, smell of good carries a long ways on a recce and you also pick out things like creamer and high cal foods to give you a boost. You would get boxes and boxes of spare rations so you could do just that. Rangers on T1 would often do that too. Smart ideas when behind. You had to pack out everything you took in too often times.

In the "how to field strip an MRE" video you talk about keeping electric tape on your load out which is a true pro tip. I love electric tape, I use trash compactor bags at home even though I don't have a trash compactor, they're a little bigger, a whole lot stronger, contain liquids and stank 100%. Smash 'em down, squeeze the air out of 'em, give 'em a spin, twist the up the top and wrap 4" of electric tape around it to secure it... I LIKE it. All that being said, I think if you incorporated a knife, or better yet, a Leatherman with scissors into the mix here you could save the time ripping stuff open with your teeth and hands, while ounces do equal pounds... seconds equal minutes.

Class 1-90, You got 1 MRE for each day of the field portion of phase up front. You had to strip them down and stuff in your ruck and ration yourself for the entire field problem. Crackers with PBJ for breakfast, dessert package for lunch, Main entrée for dinner, chewing chicklet gum for entire 24 hours. Coffee powder between your gum and lip when pulling security. You had to worry about food thieves, especially out on patrol so you buried your shit deep in your ruck. Candy was considered contraband and MREs didn't have them at the time, except around Florida phase they started showing up in MREs. Cadre were caught off guard with this MRE upgrade, but policy is policy. Dumb asses who ate them and not turn them in ended up with integrity violation and were dx'd. I remember the entire Florida Phase of candidates being hauled into an auditorium or church for mass night court, and dozens of wannabe Rangers called out and dx's on the spot, for integrity violation it was crazy. When I opened and dumped out the contents of my MRE, out came a bag of Peanut M&Ms, I wouldn't even touch it with a 10ft stick, immediately notified RI and turned that shit along with many. RI then had a 100% shake down and anyone found with wrappers or candy stashed ended up getting on that dx list. Poor dumb bastards no coming back for integrity violations!

I have seen the 4 Minute Ranger Breakfast Challenge, featuring the famous " Ranger 🍩", and now, the 5 Minute Ranger MRE Challenge, but, what is important to the Civilians watching these Videos is that the Mission Essential Objective, id est, Ranger Objective, is NOT to sit down and have a slow paced, recreational , full course meal as in a restaurant or a cafeteria. Ranger School is NOT a " " Gentleman's Course"; You only have 61 Days to learn leadership, patrols, ambushes, and raids, as well as other Skills, Training, and Experience ( STE) required to earn The RANGER Short Tab, and ,take that Military Forces Knowledge to the Service at large, for in the U. S. Army Ranger School, food is fuel, not for mere pleasure, but , a vital necessity. RLTW!!

On a side note, only eat MRE's if you have to. . .they are loaded with a couple thousand milligrams of sodium. You may feel fine now, however, you will wake up at 46 with a headache you can't shake and when you see your PCM, you'll get diagnosed with hypertension and then will have to take medication the rest of your life.
