Ranger RCI 2995DX CF - No TX Repair Tips - Applies to all RCI 29xx DX radios w/ EPT 6950xx Boards

Ғылым және технология

In this video I give tips how to diagnose and repair Ranger radios like the RCI-2950DX Series, 2970DX, 2970n2,3,4 Series, 2990DX, 2995DX, 2995DX-CF and 2995DX-HP radios with the board prefix starting with EPT 6950.
I never see much info about this repair on the internet so I thought I'd pass it along so you know what to look for. Any time you've had to replace a blown final or the Q66 regulator, and you still find you have no TX, this video is for you.

Question: what power supply is that next to the MFJ meter, I need to be sure so I can match it before I get one. I guess its been about a year and my 2995 DXCF is still running strong coast to coast, Canada, Australia. I also have a Kenwood TS940S basically in mint condition. I just got one of those MFJ meters, and a 3 position 4 radio antenna switch, will be ordering a second one. In addition to the question what do you think of the front end noise on the 2995 and what would be the best filtering solution? I know the audio in the 2995 is strong, but AM static sounds like FM static in these rigs. Also have you come across a PL tone encoder/decoder and where on the board does it plug in or solder to?

I got them on there now. I had all the screws out when working on it and just had the lid sitting on it. I use the handles often when working on this style of radio so I can set them up on the handles and the knobs don’t hit the table. Helps a lot when changing lights and things on the back of the display.

I'm from the UK and it's Legends like you who keep Radio in full swing. Thank you so much for this video. I am looking to purchase the RCI 2995dx and the RCI 69 base plus. But before I do what should I get done to the two Radios to avoid any out of the blue issues❓ Please advise as I'm looking to keep these two Radios for a long time. Thank you, UK handle ESR100

I repair a lot of ranger and galaxy radios. The best bet is when buying one that’s already high power, do not peak and ruin it. Keep the output power around the advertised original specs and they’ll last a long time. I do recommend a frequency alignment on any new analog radio because out of the box they’re always a little off on sideband. If you actually use 10m, I’d recommend the 2995 over the 69 base plus since the 69 doesn’t have a 10KC switch and you’ll need that around the 10m calling frequency. Whereas the 2995 is just continuous tuning. The only real mod I did to my 2995 was unlocking the clarifier on transmit. But you can fine tune the steps on the display without doing that. The new RCI-29 just came out and it has the same board as the 69 Base Plus, but for 10m SSB work it is useless. The clarifier sucks and it tops out at 28.315. Hope this helps. Cheers

Check the solder side traces and see if any are burnt. If they all check good, start to trace them back to q66 and q67 and if everything is ok to there, it may be the ones I’m talking about. The finals in the radio can blow and burn a trace. But if you fix the trace or q66/67 without changing the finals it’ll blow that again or make a dead short to the radio and main 13.8v.

I was helping out GI Joe’s CB shop. They’re going out of business since the owner passed away. I’ve been buying their old abandoned repairs and returned stock that wasn’t warranty and going through them one by one. So far I’ve got 4 or 5 nice radios back up and operating. It’s all a work in progress. Half the older radios with EPT3600 boards have been butchered with audio and power mods, so the starting point to that is de-modding and un-hacking before I can even try to get them back to snuff. Fun times. lol

@@DX-Rev Yeah, it can get tedious for sure brother. But, a little work here and there and next thing you know the job is done, well if the radio isn’t too far gone. 73👋🏻
