Range Rover rusty brake pipe repair.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Edd China's Workshop Diaries 20: A date with destiny. (Fixing the perished Range Rover brake pipe, should the brake pipe really look like a wet twig?)
Just one more thing to fix before we can take our 1986 Range Rover out onto the road and to its MoT test - is this really it? Well, we're about to find out. Surely, now that it runs and it's clean, it's got drive and hopefully brakes that work, it will be ready for its MoT test. Or will we find yet more things that need to be fixed first?...

No, what you really mean is real life repairs without all the bad language, busted knuckles, having to cobble up a 'similar' tool because you don't have the exact one you need, having to leave the job halfway to get another replacement widget because you only bought three but need four, finding out that someone before you 'upgraded' a part from a totally different year model, rusty screws rounding off, bolts seizing and shearing, needing an extra pair of hands to lift this, or hold that and worst of all, the Mrs. calling to talk about some nonsense when you are at the most critical point in the job - which is usually every point. Oh, and finding out that some scroat has used the last tea-bag after you boiled the kettle. Let's not talk about getting rusty flakes in your hair, mouth, eyes (even with safety specs one), trying to blow your nose with greasy hands and your gloves springing a hole, covering your fingers with black muck that will take a week to scrub out and you are going to a dinner party that night. Ever notice that a job which you figure will take an hour inevitably ends up taking 5?

@@clarkwilson3505 I hear ya, that’s all true but I was referring to the dramatic tv series on discovery channel, like Orange County Choppers and the down to the last second deadline jobs. It’s all unnecessary fluff, if I’m going to watch a mechanic show I want it to be about mechanics, not a bunch of man boy drama. Grown men acting like just got their periods.

@@thenoneckpeoplerepresentat8074 When you mean 'dramatic', you really mean scripted snowflakes, right? I believe the word you were looking for was 'manstruating'. I couldn't agree more and in that respect, your approach, Edd, is most appreciated for us 'classic car' (and I use the phrase in its loosest possible definition) home mechanics, fettlers and 'CPR' givers. Your workarounds are nicely simple and educational and there's not the editing shortcuts per WD to fit the content into a half hour slot including adverts, so we see the logical progression of the intervention. Its also nice to see ways to tackle tasks when we don't have a main-stealers garage of specialist equipment and have to occasionally improvise. I do recommend that you contact one of the tea-bag manufacturer's to arrange for a product placement deal - you could put on a flat cap, lab jacket and Yawk-shea accent to promote "Edd's Mechanic-Strength Workshop Tetley Tea - served best from a China cup"... Anyone not from the UK is unlikely to get that reference... check out the Tetley Tea-men adverts on You-Tube and you'll understand.

Fascinating to see that some old clunkers are not beyond saving (as long as you have knowledge, experience, creativity, persistence, stubbornness, the right tools and a well-equipped workshop !). What one hears is that current Range Rover engineering and manufacturing will never again produce a car that be brought to life after 40 years of hard driving and neglect. A really excellent channel. Well done all involved.

I used to replace lots of brake pipes on cars when i worked at National Tyres and autocare. My most memorable has to be a vw golf "C" registered. The entire system needed new brake pipes mainly because of the same thing where the pipes join. I did one at a time and kept it connected to an old Lucas brake bleeder machine which i had to disconnect in between. Took a while so luckily he left it with us while he went on holiday. The car is still on the road to this day. This brought back that memory. Great show Edd thank you.

One big difference here is what is acceptable to drive on the road in one place vs another. In Europe you need an MOT, and insurance to drive. In many parts of the world, if you put fuel in it and it goes forward then its good to go. Derek from VGG would have got this beast running with a boat fuel tank, changed the oil and the trans fluid and as the front 2nd brake circuit sort of works, driven 1000 miles home. If he had temporary insurance (which he normaly does) he would be good to go and it would be perfectly acceptable!.

Oh, the memories of my childhood, takes me back to being 10 years old, holding old and new brake pipes together while my dad shaped the new one to match the old. This, and "Fire watch", while he was welding underneath a car! I was inside with a watering can, and all the fumes of burning underseal, and paint! Happy days.🤩

I love the tempo of your show. I've been wrenching on cars for all of my adult life, so I'm not learning anything new here, but it's a stark contrast to the way I operate. I'm always cursing and moving quickly. I especially don't like doing rusty brake lines because they tend to break in more spots than they even were before I start in on them. You're cool, collected, calm, and the camera work really sets it off. Nice job. Also, I really like that flaring tool. If I have another big project where I need to do a bunch of flares, I might pick one up.

I have made new copper brake pipes, it is easy to do with a hand flanging tool, takes five minutes longer, but not hard. You don't have to be so fussy when running it along the car, as long as it is secured to the body (you can get plastic clips) and it is not hampering or rubbing against anything. Did all the brake pipes on my old car and it sailed through the MOT. It felt a bit spongy after bleeding, but a few hefty pushes on the peddle shifted the bubble of air and it worked its way to where it could be expelled. He commented on the hand brake but it just passed, it improved with use and in the end would lock the back wheels when driving along the road. I think it was just a bit of contamination on the rear brakes. He also commented on one wheel that was feathering a tyre, so he aligned it for next to nothing. He also broke his shifter while trying to loosing a track rod end nut. I tried not to laugh, but failed. He said it had a crack in the jaw of it for ages, it has been a spanner for 30+ years, been hammered on, put on the end of a long pipe with two people pushing on the pipe, it owes me nothing. Been a good shifter, but I was needing a new one anyway. He was quite strict with MOTs, but he lost his licence for them, never found out why!

Edd is one lucky Sonuvagun... Having the fittings crack loose with an open-end! Living in rust country (MN) you immediately go for a flare/tubing wrench and pray for the best. 99% of the time you'll be grabbing for the locking pliers (ViseGrips) and then making new lines.
