    Beautiful, Rob! Once I had a big dilemma and did not become a classical guitarist just because my nails broke before having grown enough...but I became a composer and a theorist, and did not stop playing guitar, along with piano. Now that I have discovered your art and the art of improvisers such as Joe Pass, who plays with bare fingers on metal strings, I am relieved...Thank you for your original performances and your unorthodox attitude!

    Thanks, Dimitar. I glad you found a way to create music. I've discovered there are so many who gave up guitar because they couldn't grow their nails, for whatever reason. Such a pity. I couldn't get a good sound without nails. As soon as I adjusted my right hand as you demonstrated, there it was. I love to play. I'm self taught and found this to be a very natural way to play. I was told my style was a multitude of "bad habits" but it feels comfortable and I'm progressing very quickly. Thanks for sharing!!!

    +John Logan Yes, it was the 640 version. Still is, in fact ;-) But it's no longer mine. I got the chance of a Simon Ambridge guitar, and sold a few instruments to pay for it. But it was bought by one of my students, so I see it fairly regularly, and still admire it as a guitar.

    I've had trouble with these two pieces of over 40 years!! But, watching your left hand, it seems that you are using a different fingering than the one I've been struggling with. Where might I get the music showing the fingering that you are using? Many thanks

  • @RobMacKillop1

    @RobMacKillop1

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dave. I usually work out my own fingering, based on my technique and interpretation. I've hardly ever played the written fingerings, which are usually supplied by an editor, not the composer. So, there is no edition I know of with my fingering, so you'll have to watch my video bar by bar, or better still make up your own fingering. Good luck! If you get stuck, I do Skype lessons. Rob

I import that to my laptop, where I edit the sound in Wavelab Essential 6 - a very, very basic, but good-quality editing software. I add a little reverb, Then I open Vegas Studio Lite for the video editing, and replace the video sound with the edited soundfile. It sounds a long process, but it doesn't take me long at all. Rob, are you using gut on this guitar also? I’ve quit the nails and have been playing with A=432 for a few years, but haven’t moved to gut yet. Do you find that modern classical guitars respond well with gut strings?

  • @RobMacKillop1

    @RobMacKillop1

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Chuck. These are the Aquila Ambra 900 set, which are nylgut - nylon made to sound similar to gut. However, the manufacturer has changed them since I recorded this video, and I don't like using the new sets. The trebles used to be rough to the touch, which is what you want if you play without nails, and definitely not what you want if you play with nails. The new sets are ultra smooth, which I really don't like.

    I've been wanting to get into classical guitar, but it's just too obnoxious to grow my nails just for this hobby which won't be the center of my life. The unfortunate truth is that many classical guitarists are quite elitist about tradition and technique, but seeing that you can still make beautiful sounds without nails will hopefully shut up the naysayers, and gives me incentive to practice more. Thanks for the inspiration!
