I don't think he meant that he got rewarded based on a quota for minorities, he was talking about giving equal opportunity to minorities and whether you succeed or not that is up to your skills and hard work.

I love how he used his opportunity to stand right there on that stage where they asked him rather mindless questions but to which he instead decided to answer with responses of opinion about the economical, social and cultural justice situation in the country. And he was so very humble and appreciative about standing there all the way through due to the exact issues he talked about - he really didn't think someone like him would be nominated, not to mention awarded, so his reaction to this alone really speaks volumes about the society we still live in.

Why did they not clap to show support of his "typical leading man"? We all know that casting a man for a role and identifying a role in a man has much to do with his status in the social world. Name five character-actors who are arab, or latin american or mexican or asian or LGBT or native american- who naturally play characters that do not need their socio-economic stamp in order to function. The actor has a mark, and it is visible if we critically and obviously analyse it, like a sociologist would or an underdog would- or someone who cares to express the human experience, would The casting process is not just about finding, discovering and accepting, it is about scanning, comparing, denying, curtailing, excusing and hiding. Every actor has a history, a past, regardless of their desire to tell stories in the present. True rejection is saying we cannot invite you into the future. For now If you are a gay actor, you must keep silent. if you are a black actor you must be twice as good. If you are a black actress, you must be thrice as beautiful. If you are uncastable you must be really funny or really quirky- or all of the above+skill. The deeper the risk of being a minority, the higher the price to pay the debt of inhabiting "a typical leading man". The monkey on his back must be huge. The silent struggle in the pigeonhole must have been so frustrating. How many great actors have we lost because they simply cannot imagine themselves in the artform/industry? Craft promising that people will allow themselves to identify with you, industry promising that people are willing to spend money on you. Part creator, part commodity, how much are we willing to pay to see a dirty arab do what he loves the most? My overarching question is this, in an age where we are losing our historical humanism, what will it look like if we forget to practice empathy and imagination? Acting is not just entertainment, it is culture, and if society does not progress, culture must lead the way. Congratulations to you angel Malek, my uncle is named Rami, and he lives in Palestine. Not to say that this show is 100% anti-system and goes HARD on it to bring it to a change. . And that's quite a "black sheep" in all the media and award industry. It's delicate material. It's almost guaranteed to fail, and yet, it didn't, because it was produced so brilliantly. ;)
