I wish there were more youtube channels like this. A guy just living his life who happens to like posting a few vids now and then talking about stuff they enjoy. KZread's been so commercialized these past few years that I really enjoy when someone makes videos because they actually have something to show/discuss. Rather than filling the weekly quota of 'content'

I think you actually summarized the reason I got into souls really well. I never thought about the fact that a lack of another Skyrim or Elder Scrolls could have driven me to these games, but it makes total sense. You also touched on the difference in viewpoint really well, it’s not that playing a certain way is bad, but that people are encouraging others to miss out on a huge section of the fun in this game. Watching the comment sections of those people vs more fun streamers like Robb576 and Makuta is just reading the same salt and “do chainsaw” over and over again. It’s upsetting because it’s making the player base view the game more negatively than they need to and thus spreading that mindset around. That’s why channels like yours are awesome Rofo. Thanks for doing what you do 🤌🏼

This build is sooo fun to watch! Also I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on that dude in the comments and the idea of tryharding. It’s not that we’re opposed to skillful play (in fact I think some folks would look at how we played DS3 as sweaty), we just value doing stuff that feels different and unique. Playing with our digital Barbies is about putting cool clothes and giving them cool weapons and spells, and doing something with it that feels memorable

It was pretty disheartening to see you get a few comments like that on your Long Spear vid, like come on the whole point is that this makes gameplay in a 7 year old game more interesting! Like you said with the Barbies (so true so true), what is the point of playing this game if you're not going to engage with 90% of the content offered to you

I make much more simple builds in these games. Got my faith build, intelligence build, faith int build, quality, ect ect. Just the basic stuff so I can use every weapon in the game and just have a good time in duels and helping people against bosses. But what I really love to do, is make characters. Like full on back stories and all for my characters. I got like 10 characters who are all connected to each other in some way. Evelyn The Loyal is a loyal servant to Lord Iyofair Rugo. IronWill Ishlava was a loyal companion to Ulsof One-Eye until they both parted ways, Ishlava going to join the Redmane knights and Ulsof the Gelmir knights. I have so much lore and back story around these characters, to the point I could make an entire story around them if I wanted. That's how I enjoy these games. Making builds to give me more access to weapons, then making a theme and giving this character all this lore that no one is gonna know about but I don't care its fun.

Those names are all straight bangers, I absolutely love lore characters and the fact that you've connected them all to each other is just another level of endearment that I love to see. And honestly your builds don't need to be overly complicated in order to work, sometimes a straight-foward build with some unique fashion is all it takes to get the creative juices flowing

@@RofoTheGyrm My favorite name I've created is Grana Kin-Slayer, Grana coming from the Gaelic word Gránna, which means Vile. And I wanted to use the Regalia of Eeochaid, which if I remember correctly is a gaelic name. He's an albunaric in similar fashion to Old Albus, and he just goes around killing people. Still a work in progress but I kinda intend for him to be this sorta antagonist to all the other characters. I also just really wanted to use the Regalia and Marais great sword because they're so cool. And of course Fashion over Function. Unless I actively wanna light roll, I wear whatever so long as I don't heavy roll. If you're not winning in style you're not winning.

I fully agree with you on the G9 clones, any brainlet can just grab dual lances or swords or bandits/scavengers and win 9/10 invasions with ease but that's not what these games are about. It was always about silly hijinks and the social aspect, often I just gift the host and return when they have a unique build or cosplay. I've made a RL138 Quality build for the first time and I'll be invading the DLC with it, has a bunch of my favorite weapons that don't often get used despite being fun and it's also versatile so that it easily adapts to most new weapons to be found.

Totally agree with overly competitive people missing the point and design of these games but I believe they're some sort of necessary evils for the community. Asymmetrical and chaotic nature of invasions is where the fun's at but at the same time, balance does not necessarily mean symmetrical pvp. It's always nice to try out fun weapons without the sole purpose of novelty. A single weapon outclassing all the others will never not be a bad look imo, so all the 'whining' (for lack of a better term) from the tryhard community is sometimes worth it when FROM rarely lends an ear and actually does something. Not to mention some people just cannot help it at all, they just have to win and every game is a fighting game. So I feel sorry for the clones tbh. Love the dlc optimism btw. We all know it'll be filled with OP, frustratingly annoying ashes of war, spells, etc but pve will be fascinating and will take some time to sink in. We've waited this long and hopefully couple of months will do the trick for balancing.

  • @RofoTheGyrm

    @RofoTheGyrm

That's definitely a great point about when the voices of the tryhard community become important. It's why I have a ton of respect for the work folks like Rust_Bucket, Gabri and Frosty put into diving deep into this game. Even if I don't replicate their style of play, the knowledge they bring to the table is quite useful in understanding why certain aspects of combat in Elden Ring are beneficial and which ones should probably be fixed. And I'm not sure that depth of knowledge can be obtained without leaning fully into optimizing builds and playstyles in these games.

I feel you bro. I have engaged very little with PvP in Elden Ring because it doesn't interest me at all, I just play the PvE, but we have this same problem in the Path of Exile community. I made a video recently discussing the idea of toxic optimality. There is a relatively small but very vocal segment of the community that measures everything in currency per hour and pure power, and copying the latest broken meta build from a popular streamer, and shames anyone who plays/makes off meta builds or just farms the content they think is fun instead of trying to maximize profit like POE is a second job. Your statement of feeling like it is such a waste to just clone a build in a game with so much room for self expression really resonated with me because that's exactly how I feel about POE. I have no problem with people who play that way, other than the fact that they seem to have a problem with everyone who doesn't think like them, and I feel like it is particularly detrimental to newer players who go visit the reddit and are told "You MUST do X, Y, and Z" to play the game.

Really love hearing that perspective from different games as well. I've heard much of the same thing from my friends and coworkers who've played Helldivers 2, a game with zero PVP, that other co-opers would get mad at people they'd matchmake with that didn't have optimal gear. The creative director at the studio I work at once said that gamers will absolutely optimize the fun out of every game, that always rings true to me.

I completely agree with your closing thoughts. In order for the new DLC stuff to break Elden Ring, there would have to be some sort of unbroken game underneath it. In fact I'm fairly confident that the new stuff will inject life into ER with the variety alone. Now you can recontextualize your old builds with new options that may better convey your themes. Or come up with completely new builds from new DLC weapons and lore. Also keen Guardian Swordspear, definitely too much for a halberd running poke for sure. I do like it though, and for weapons that I like and find enjoyable to pilot, I tend to make exceptions.

I mean whether its invasions or arena, these things exist for fun right? Well as for another topic: Yeah running a dual wield build combining a polearm type of weapon with a quicker weapon like a sword is a lot of fun. Did it a lot in Dark Douls 3, for example I used the Aquamarine Dagger in the main hand and then put Friedes Scythe in the off hand. People often get caught off guard when you mix in the slower high range attack from the polearm.

I think it is because in every souls-game's life cycle comes a point when the meta becomes codified. Thus, there'll be those who will misunderstand the concept of balance in an RPG game and will perceive weapons and spells in extremes. There's Meta and there's Trash. No in-between So, even though the majority of weapons are simply average, or Mid, as the young kids say, they just don't perceive it that way.

What initally pulled me towards PvP and what yoinks me back in again and again is getting to be part of someone's world as an interesting encounter. One of my favorite things is the surprise social aspects where people communicate via emotes and have fun just acting out a scene. However I have found this inital sentiment has a way of slowly being corroupted by a kind of pride or need for control. Maybe a good fight and a close victory was lost to a betrayal of precieved honor? Maybe you felt that you lost to something annoying or 'low skill' and if you had just a litttttle bit more of an edge you KNOW you could have beaten those guys. Plus like, it can just feel awful to spend how many hours putting together a cool and then getting beaten to a pulp by the host and his squad. With all that said I think if someone is in a similar boat where you have gravitated towards optimization rather than creativity then its important to reset your perspective, adjust your expectations, try to let go of the silly losses, and for gods sake give yourself some credit cuz invading is hard!

So often I have invasions where I lose to a party that I used some goofy setup against, knowing that if I just mained my "find out weapon" then it would've been over in like 30 seconds. But at the same time, it would've reduced that interaction to just yet another invasion where I just steamroll over my opponents without a second thought, and honestly where is the fun in that. So I'm definitely with you on that, thank you for this comment!

Rofo you encapulate my entire approach and opinions towards this game but you are always able find the PERFECT words to use when talking about it!!!! I'm definitely not a fan of the 'jeenine' approach to build making, it's so boring...and even worse to fight against.

Hahaha, I knew you of all people appreciate a good unique build. And yeah that's a great point, the thing I like the least about the "clone" playstyle is that puts me to sleep to fight against. Every time they get hit or start to engage in combat they feel the need to run 30m away to swap half their talismans and a new weapon before even beginning to reengage. Gives me conniptions!

I do invasions with a poison infused poison fang for the 90 second deadly poison, and just try to poison people and run away while they slowly die to it lol. It's a horrible strategy but frankly most players don't know that boluses exist and I find it entertaining to play this way. I sometimes open my world to invaders and it's insane how many times I see the same shit over and over again, and half the time they are terrible at pvp and just get destroyed in a 1v1 in spite of all their meta garbage anyway lol

Despite this comment not making any actual sense grammatically, I think I can parse what you're attempting to say here. That being said, what I think you're trying to say here doesn't even make sense because I have like 3 invasions in this 15min video alone where I beat a 3v1 with suboptimal gear. You're clearly listening pretty intently to what I'm saying here, so not sure why you failed to pick up on what's happening in the invasions. Anyways, thanks for driving up the engagement on my video and missing the point of it all at the same time!

I win invasions with terrible suboptimal builds all the time, you just gotta try and get better. Using hyper-optimized meta clone builds isn't going to make you better, it's just a crutch

Way to tell on yourself that you suck at the game when your crutches are taken away, 20% winrate would be if you were forced to only use colossal weapons because those have like 2-3 viable attacks.

To be fair to the terminally pvp brained comment "of using bad weapons doesnt make you good", I think steel had a super specific type of player in mind. dudes who would unironically claim that an omega or a luber, or a space ranger are bad players because they use good set ups. The quintesential example of this type of delusional fella is a guy called VZH. There's a whole saga in steel channel on him.

Good to know, I have very limited exposure to Steel and thus when I heard this on that podcast I was a little put off, it seemed like an odd thing to devote time and energy to. I'm not surprised Oroboro also agreed with it, but I haven't had an incredibly high opinion of his content ever since his early DS3 days. Thanks for letting me know about that!

@@RofoTheGyrm no problem, I can imagine it might seem odd with out having the super specific context of the type of player that comment might apply to. And I try not to name call unless its really warranted, but in this case I think its just an accurate description of the player. Based on the interactions Ive had with the player he seems like one of the most reasonable people on that side of the comunity, but his mean spirited comments on much better players than himself really speak for themselves.

Newcomers to souls via ER don't care about expressing themselves with builds & fashion. The Kevin phenomenon shows that off well enough. The majority of ER's playerbase, having replaced the old souls mindsets, wants cheesy and flashy stuff. This is why one invades, to take them down a peg and force them to deal with challenges. haha you really just told ChaseTheBro to go play Rust instead 😂 "We've been playing in the nightmare realm for two years", we're used to it LOL

Expecting newcomers to immediately “get it”, know what is unique and off meta, and choose to use that over what is obviously powerful, is hilarious to me. My first DS1 playthrough I hugged my overpowered Black Knight Shield like a goddamn teddy bear. A huge portion in DS3 used Friede’s, RKPUGS, Sellswords, and other overpowered or flashy options - that’s not new to ER, that’s just a Fromsoft balance issue. Is it not fair to expect slightly more awareness and creativity from PvPers with thousands of hours under their belt? I can’t imagine not getting bored with stuff when you’re the one invading and seeing dozens of different players a day in-game and online who are using the same exact things. We can’t level the same criticism against Kevin who picked up the cool katana on their solo or co-op playthrough, and only sees maybe two other players the entire time they’re playing.

Idk, HAS Chase the Bro played Rust??? And I think Kevin's are attempting to show off their fashion sense but just don't have as much game knowledge as us. Like they're usually wearing Radahn's armor because almost everyone beats Radahn at some point in this game and he has an incredible character design, of course they're gonna wear his armor. Same reason why Kevins wore the Fallen Knight Set in DS3, it was a pretty cool armorset that was insanely easy to find that unfortunately just got overused, and it's not like Kevins would ever know that

Haha I was just being elitist, it's all in good fun. You both make good points Yeah I know you didn't mention Chase by name but your description of hardswapping sweat was so on the nose. He deserves his popularity through hard work, but his popularity shows how many people want to win hard regardless of experimentation

I feel there is a bunch of assumptions in this video, but one that I wanted to touch upon is why you're assuming people who are playing "Jeenine clones" do so because "the youtuber told them to"? idk I play my own builds and they're certainly not meta or have any poise etc, but I do believe these people just want to play a more optimize build and they trust said person with their build, I watch some of Jeenine video casually and not often. But not once he says "use this, do that", so the first point is why you assumed thats the case? it just come across as if you have a personal problem with Jeenine or his kind of content or people that watch him or just want to play his builds, which is weird and brings us to my second point that is, people should play how they want and with their own idea of fun. Going against that just come across as bitter and I don't really understand the reason.

  • @RofoTheGyrm

See that's where I disagree with you, I think only playing the game the way that youtubers have told you is optimal is incredibly lame. I think it goes against the general spirit of these games that let's you play the game in all these ways different ways to instead treat it like a fighting game and boil everything down to precisely what is going to increase your odds of winning. That's not to say you can't use busted gear here and there, some busted gear is indeed very fun, but I think a playstyle that involves swapping between new weapons and gear every 5 seconds makes for incredibly boring gameplay to watch, and isn't something I'm interested in replicating myself or fighting against for that matter. You can disagree with me on that, I'm not dictating etiquette and this is solely my opinion. I wouldn't call myself "bitter" about this attitude, as none of these youtubers have done anything to me personally and I have almost zero interaction with them which I'm perfectly happy with.

Been doing "uninvasions" the past couple days, a lot of the time they will just kill me but half the time at least they will respond positively, had some great interactions and gave some consumables or weapons away. Im not very good at pvp but i find this a lot more fulfilling. To be honest i really dislike invaders, a lot of them ive witnessed use npc's as shields, try and kill the cooperators even after the host has gone to the boss room and runaway to try and aggro every enemy on the map (not saying you do those things). Did like the tone of the video and i find pvp in Elden Ring interesting to hear about.

so much dishonesty I find in this vid offhand great spear is broken because of its hyperarmor which should not have, and you call that trying different set ups try whip with flail and we will how it goes

I have tried whips and they are pretty fun, have YOU tried them? Clearly not since you seem adverse to anything that a youtuber would put below C tier on a weapon tier list. Whips are actually pretty fun with the offhand Great Spear too, which other talented people have highlighted before. But again, wouldn't recommend you trying that because that might be too much fun for you
