This video tries to examine how a single source of text can lead to two different adaptations for the screen while still being able to stay true the source. The films under consideration, Hum Saath Saath Hai and Lajja, are definitely bad films, but they make an interesting case study to examine how two different points of view can be portrayed to bring home a narrative idea.
Music Used:
Technically, missing - Gone Girl
Sugar Storm - Gone Girl
The Mole - Dunkirk
Tears in the Rain - Blade Runner 2049

After last watching Pretentious movie reviews and reading Imaan Sheikh's blog, my memory of HSSH was reduced to that of a nineties drama fixated on music, dance and traditional love for family that needs to be shown explicitly. It maybe a bad movie but you have drawn our attention rightly to the references that its storyline made, and also forgot to make. Since I have not seen Lajja, it was enlightening to know that the script questioned the narrative of Ramayana in a novel way. Madhuri Dixit's dialogue "mujhe kuch sabit wabit nahin karna" was spot on. Another great thought provoking video essay! And yes, we need to relook at the ancient stories, because they justify certain practices in today's country that are against human dignity. Stories are a great starting point to get people into thinking and re-evaluating their assumptions about the society and the world.

Shakespearean plays have also been interpreted and presented in tremendously different ways throughout the ages, being relevant to their sociopolitical context for e.g. Hamlet being presented as Oedipus during the Freudian era vs Hamlet being presented as a gentle, weak prince during the Romantic era and so on. In the same way, seeing different interpretations of classical stories in Indian mythology such as Ramayana is so refreshing. The beauty of these classical stories and Shakespearean plays is that they can be adapted to any era and retold from a fresh perspective, making them timeless. I hope more people in India see the potential in presenting Indian mythology in new light, as opposed to just retelling the tradition, allowing these pieces to flourish and take new shapes. It’s great way to see the evolution of ideologies and societies.

You deciphered my comment wrongly. Coming to adulteration of Ramayana I don't to what extent its done, but the original Ramayana also always depicted Seetha as submissive character. It was more about glorifying the Rama and dharma. Seetha never had voice to question.

But HSSH will always remain a guilty pleasure; something about it makes me unable to change the channel even during the 456th rerun on Zee Cinema. For Sita's perspective, you should watch Nina Paley's 'Sita Sings the Blues'. It's kind of a universal feeling, the Sita Syndrome - being trapped in love of a man who is very, very wrong for you. But the poignancy expressed in that film, along with the blues music is so rich, it makes you a sucker for pain.

Great content. I am always fascinated by movies and filmaking in general and seen a lot of channels discussing about it. Finally found someone who is tackling the Indian cinema and analysing in a pretty detailed manner. Keep up the good work, this channel deserves more subscribers. P.S- could you do a video about Satyajit Ray ?

I think the television series in DD is the best. It would be really difficult to make a movie adaptation. May be a trilogy would work.

Another great video. The questions you raised for Ram's character by the end of the video is what I used to think a lot as a child, gradually realising the time constraint narrative of the story and became a monotheist by the age of 15 and then atheist by the age of 17 and finally agnostic by the age of 18, only believe in the rare possibility of a creator and nothing like "quintessential God"
