Its hard work building out a van, can't imagine how tough it is with two toddlers vying for your attention at the same time AND video recording it, great work mom and dad! I am by no means an expert and I know you have a professional electrician advising you but you may wish to research "marine boat wiring" tips, its more akin to campervans than to stick home builds. From what I've researched boats use different wiring techniques than a house due to the extreme environment and movement both a boat/camper vans are put through. For example many "experts" discourage the use of wire nuts as connection points in a boat/rv's due to the vibrations that can cause them to become loose eventually, better to use marine style heat shrink wrapped crimped connections, much more secure. They also advise using protective wire channel for electrical lines that run behind the walls to prevent the live wires from chaffing from the movement and vibrations that come with traveling. This could prevent a short or worse. Good luck on your build, its a HUGE task, I take my hat off to both for even trying. The more I research, the more respect I have for those that attempt it!.

Thank you very much for the kind words. And thanks for the tips/advice. I will definitely look into that. I have heard/seen of the marine connections before on an Airstream forum, but it was not explained very well for me to grasp. Thanks again!
In the uk where I am we cant really use fluffy wall insulation, it tends to grab moisture (from our constant rain) then it wicks down into areas and causes rust, so we have to go with the solid sheets of foam. we can get some 'fluffy' insulation thats made from recycled plastic and shouldnt have the problem, but i went with polystyrene style foam sheets as i found some that were going to the dump from a housing project someone was doing. nice van you have.

Hi Project806....wool will actually grab moisture and the release it in drier ambient air. Of course there is more strain on this relationship in wetter areas. However, it would be tough to say that foam, which is impermeable, is not simply pushing the condensation somewhere else to cause rust. Wish we could help you in the UK. We'd love to have a facility over there!

Great video guys! Now that it's been almost a year, would you do the same insulation again? In my van, I only did reflectix and a dynamat layer, but now I'm going to go back and do something more burly for acoustic/insulation purposes. my Promaster is LOUD inside! And I've been camping in it a lot more than anticipated. Polysio board with some wool in the pockets might be the trick, but that still sounds like a lotta work!

Hey, thanks for watching! We do not have this van anymore as we sold it a while ago, but the current owners have been using it in Northern Washington in the winters and haven’t seemed to have any issues. We just bought a new sprinter and plan to use the wool again as well. It’s a very good product.

Hey, thanks for all the great van build videos. Quick question: do you know if there is a purpose for the holes on the side of the ram promaster that protrude down beneath the van floor? (seen insulating in this video ~5:40) I'm working on insulating my van right now and I'm considering purchasing wool to insulate those holes, as they are surprisingly deep. However, I have yet to see anyone on KZread discuss them, let alone insulate them, except for you. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for watching. Not sure exactly what the holes are for, some say to not insulate because mold will grow. But our insulation we used is resistant to mold and I doubt water is collecting in there.

Hey! Thanks for watching. Our walls/ceiling were 1/4” flooring underlayment panels that can be found at HomeDepot. Fairly cheap. We then painted the whole inside of the van after install. If I were to do it again I might have hit the back sides with a natural oil or poly of some sorts to give them a coating to resist any moisture that might occur in the walls, just as a precaution. Havelock wool was a really great product! Very easy to use. We used fishing string to hold it in place. There are obviously other solutions like spray adhesive but we opted to not use that.

Hi, does anyone know why my rockwool insulation in the walls of my sprinter conversion would be damp? The walls were insulated with rock wool, kingspan and a bit of expanding foam. Then they were covered with foil vapour barrier and foil tape. I then battened and ply lined the walls. So I drilled out the electrical hook up today and discovered the rock wool is damp and the van hasn't even been lived in yet. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

We used havelock wool in our build. They recommend not using any vapor barriers. Here’s a link to their website they talk about it more! Hope that helps havelockwool.com/van-insulation-products/#faq
I noticed that you didn't put a vapor barrier up anywhere. You might want to go back, before you add a bed or shelves, and add a vapor barrier, especially if you plan on using propane to heat or cook in the van since a byproduct of propane combustion is water vapor. A very humid environment and no vapor barrier is a recipe for mold in the walls! I'm in the middle of my build now and I'm using the rigid foam board for the large areas and wool in the pockets for insulation and then a layer of reflectix as an insulation/ vapor barrier dual purpose. I'm curious as to why you choose the Goal Zero over the Kodiak, for a little more you could have gotten the Intergy Kodiak and had a much more powerful solar generator than the Yeti Goal Zero. Good luck on your build I subscribed so I could follow the build.

Hey, thanks for following along! This is why we didn't do a vapor barrier-> havelockwool.com/van-insulation-products/ The company who makes the wool we bought recommended to not do one. I'll look into Kodiak for a future project. We read/watched a ton of reviews about Goal Zero and have been happy with it so far!

Most avoid the vapor barrier as your walls will do better if they can breath. If you do put one up to protect from internal moisture then you are trapping that which occurs from the outside via condensation. Walls that can breath will serve you well!
@torevalberg3510
5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, even in northern Europe wool work great as van insulation, provided you have good ventilation and allow walls to breathe. Vapor barrier would just lock in moisture between metal and barrier. Key is ventilation, as wool is an excellent moisture regulator.
Looks good! How much did the wool cost for your van? And is that the extended length promaster?

This may be a bit of a "duh" question, but you are just screwing the furring strips to the metal "studs" in the van, is that right? That was the part I came here for (the ceiling) and it was a little difficult to see (great video though, thanks) If you don't mind me asking, What size and type did you use? lol, I overthink everything too....
@SteadyStreaminCashios

Hey, yes I did screw the furring strips to the ceiling studs. If I can remember correctly I think I used 3/4” plywood, as this was the least amount I could use to ensure I had the tallest ceiling height possible in our van. The 3/4” measured the same height as the wood supports for our fans. Hope you can understand that, it’s hard through text I know lol. Good luck with your build. Also, do what your gut tells you, overthinking will slow you down. You got this!

Thanks so much for watching! We needed the longer one because we have 2 kids, if it was just two of us I’m sure we could have done the smaller one! We honestly had no problems with parking, we even parked in cities no problem. So I guess it’s all preference, as far as the monetization, we have no problem watching ads on other channels videos(no matter what number of subs they have). That means their channel is getting supported, which is awesome! No different than anytime someone flips on the tv, luckily with these you get the option to skip :)

So wiring before insulation or insulation before wiring?
@SteadyStreaminCashios

Wiring before, our insulation took longer than we wanted to come in. So instead of sitting around waiting we worked. Worked for us.
The rocker panels where you put insulation are notorious for water leaking in. This will cause mold in the insulation. It's better not to put any insulation in this area. If you search you will find others who have had to go back and remove the insulation for this reason.

It comes in through the plastic plugs that hold the exterior rocker panels on. And then low end work from the RAM factory on sealing it up. In the evening I had a friend take a flashlight and shine it in the wheel well. While on the inside you could see a lot of gaps. My thought on the interior rocker panels were closed cell foam strips on the bottom. And the the wool. So the wool would stay out of the area of water accumulation. I have spent time in the inside with dicor non leveling lap sealant sealing the plastic plugs and the wheel well. The self leveling lap sealant on the roof joints.

@@MyGoogleKZread If you drive while you're looking into the opening you will find it also splashes in around the wheel house. I felt rather than trying to seal it I would let air flow dry it out when it's not raining. If you wanted to seal it, the old Z-Bart rust proofing would probably work best, although that tends to leak over time.
