Ram Dass on Awareness Without Identification - Here and Now Podcast Ep. 227

In this Q&A session from 1993, Ram Dass explores an array of topics, including psychedelics as a method, assisted suicide, dealing with suffering, and awareness without identification.
“The term attachment has to do with where the awareness is, what it’s identified with. Like, at this moment, your heart is beating, but you’re not beating your heart; your awareness isn’t connected with your heart beating, it’s just going on. And as your awareness draws back, and you find a way to start to remain in awareness without identification, then the phenomena of the universe continue to happen, but the awareness is no longer identified with the act. It’s what the Gita calls breaking the identification with being the actor. It doesn’t mean that the actions aren’t happening.” - Ram Dass
In this episode, Ram Dass answers questions about:
- Psychedelics as a method
- Assisted suicide
- Emptiness and form
- Dealing with suffering
- The relationship between the One and the many
- Liberation and service
- Awareness without identification and attachment
- The concept of criticism
- Pushing against form and separateness
“Understanding the web of all life, you begin to see that any act of compassion, done anywhere, is part of the web of compassion of the universe.” - Ram Dass
About Ram Dass:
Ram Dass’ spirit has been a guiding light for generations, carrying along millions on the journey. Ram Dass teaches that through the Bhakti practice of unconditional love, we can all connect with our true nature. Through these teachings, Ram Dass has shared a little piece of his guru, Maharajji, with all who have listened to him.

This speaks directly to my ineffective lifelong bleeding heart. So many of us play into the hands of tyrants by becoming paralyzed and not recognizing the importance of our spiritual development.

Always remember that even having this awareness sets you up for growth. You've got the key, just work on keeping your thoughts trained on the good, the true, and the beautiful, and you will find lovely peaceful satiating moments amongst the tumult. Your comment resonated with me, I have hurt much of my life and I'm still full of struggling, but keeping to my practices has genuinely transformed me into a minder of my own body and spirit like I never understood before, and even though my body still hurts and my spirit still sobs a lot, the grace that comes with doing the right thing really soothes the edge on all that. 🧡

I love Ramdass. It's like he's still here and all his wisdom speaks to me. I rarely have any issues with what he says. On the subject of suicide being a personal choice and we should not judge and in fact respect another's choice. What came to my mind was that shouldn't we consider our karma for such an act? And shouldn't we be considering our loved ones and the subsequent suffering they will endure?

You can only realize the traps once you’ve experienced them. The practices, no matter what they may be, are all part of YOUR path, transition, growth, awakening, whatever you’d like to call it. Meditation, I have been told, is the last attachment... however, I don’t see meditation as an attachment or a trap...actually as I’m writing I’m realizing it is....unless you’ve reached the stage where everything you do is a meditation. Embrace all of it, let go of the ones which no longer serve. Just my thoughts 🙏🏼💜🇨🇦

I posted to Tiktok yesterday, IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD START GREETING EVERYONE WHO GETS CLOSE ENOUGH TO YOU TO ACKNOWLEDGE IN SOME MANNER. This isn't the exact post but I am saying, say hello, good morning, nod your head , wave your hand, smile etc. People have been through years of don't talk to strangers programming and it is time that we treat no one as a stranger. We are one so there are no strangers in the world.

What I have heard is that people in the US were given AIDS during hepatitis treatments and the people of Africa were given AIDS by way of vaccine programs. You decide for yourselves. I am just sharing information that is out there to be considered.

When you have "heard" something it will taken by right thinking people as gossip. If you want to be taken seriously you will need to back up such claims from trusted sources. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make within the whole context of this teaching?

@@glaight6362 the Northstar doesn't give you your destination. It points you in a direction to go. I have reason to believe that the Aids epidemic was a test of the ingredients of the injections that people were practically forced to take over the last three years. If you are aware that many alternative experts are now saying that most people who took the needle craft are now immune compromised. A world of information is available at people's fingertips and none but one's self can prove anything to anyone. No one told me about the Here and Now network yet it was revealed to me. Seek and ye shall find.
