Ram 2500 NEW 6.7L Cummins Diesel Engine *Heavy Mechanic Review* | The Perfect Engine Combo?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

the 2025 Ram 2500/3500 will have a Brand New 6.7L Cummins Diesel Engine reportedly more power then the current cummins High Output diesel engine with 420hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. This cummins engine will ALSO be paired with the ZF 8 speed powerline transmission completely reshaping the diesel powertrain. It might be the best Engine/Transmission Combo.

Mopar Insider has reported that in 2025 there will be a brand new version of the 6.7L cummins turbo diesel engine going in the RAM 2500 and Ram 3500 HD pick up trucks.
we have also found out that there is not going to be a standard output and high output version of the engine. instead there will just be one engine option but this engine option is reported to be more powerful then the Current HO cummins diesel option which is pretty awesome to hear.
now along with this new CUmmins diesel engine. these RAM 2500 truck will ditch the longstanding 68RFE 6 speed transmission for the ZF 8 speed powerline transmission which i think will be a wonderfully strong and reliable unit.
If cummins built this new engine right, paired with that new HD zf 8 speed transmission these RAM HD trucks could be absolutely wonderful trucks. Im very excited to see what happens moving forward. We don't have power numbers just yet but I imagine it won't be long now.
The third bit of information is that RAM is indeed keeping the 6.4L Hemi onboard as the standard engine option and only gas engine option. I have speculated that Ram was going to ditch these 6.4L hemi engines but not right now.
at least through the 2025 model year the 6.4L hemi will live and who knows how much further past then!

The torque wars are ridiculous. The drivability and reliability are what buyers look for. I don't care which one is "faster". If you're buying an HD truck for speed, you're nuts. They are made for towing and hauling heavy loads and doing it well for a long time. That's the point. It is exciting to hear about a ZF mated to the Cummins HO. That should be a formidable combo.

There are many who believe that ZF makes the world's best transmissions. Of course, Cummins is legendary. Little boys grow into men wanting a Cummins diesel. So, I believe that this is a smart move. Arguably, Ram will have the best engine and the best transmission in their heavy duty trucks. It would be virtually impossible for them to build anything better themselves.

I have 2014 3500 standard output dually (68rfe) and pull a fifth wheel over 60% of its 102,000 miles. No tuner - stock size tires - I did take out the thermal block in the tranny lines and replaced with a pass through unit. I service the tranny with pan off fluid and filter change ( i know i am leaving several quarts in TC) every 33k. NO PROBLEMS except a fan pully bearing on the engine at 90k. Well...that damn Uconnect screen will sometimes wait two minutes to show up and come on and the factory Nav thinks I am in the ocean🙃. I have to say I have gotten my money's worth in 10 years and I can sell it for a fair amount over half what I paid for it. I LOVE the idea of a new rig but I am wary of the hydraulic lifters (compared to my solid lift cam) and they have become SO overpriced that I don't believe in ten years I will be able to get 60 plus % of what I pay today out of it. I think ram was waiting until they had a better transmission to bump up the power. The 68RFE was okay, but never shifted really happy and kinda the same story with the Aisin unit in the HO version. They just didn’t drive anywhere as good as the competing. That and I trust the 68RFE about as far as I can throw it, which is pretty self explanatory. It’s way better than the old 4 speed, but under extreme duty, just doesn’t hold up.

It might make more sense for Ram/Cummins to only have one, but I think from a consumer standpoint this is bad. Having some real separation in capability between the 2500 and 3500 series trucks makes sense. So then naturally having a smaller engine, focused on less cost (perhaps) but more importantly, fuel efficiency, would be a good thing. We don't need a 2500 with 2000 lb/ft of torque, that makes 0 sense. If you need more power than 800 lb/ft then hop into the 3500, that's literally what its there for. For the 2500, give me a smaller engine, and allow me to keep my total cost of ownership down (less def usage, less mpg, and whatever else is involved). Having an updated 8 speed across the board though, that is a good thing. I don't think this will help sales either, the Ram heavy duty looks stale, and it has the smallest cab. That needs to be adressed at some point very soon. If they had come out with an all new 5th gen heavy duty 2500, new cab, updated dimensions, 8 speed transmission, and a more efficient cummins at 800 lb/ft, that would be killer IMHO. Keep the 1000+ lb/ft monster for the 3500 where its actually needed.

I don't think anybody knows yet what the actual technical revisions will be from the current engines, if there even are any. They might just be dropping the standard output version and doing a modest power bump on the current HO version and calling it "new and improved". The transmission I believe they have been working on for quite some time which is probably the bigger news.
