Ram 2500 Gear swap 3.42 to 4.30.

This is a video of before and after of the truck after re gearing. Notice how better the truck gets up to speed and stays in gear with out down shifting or upshifting like crazy.

    Yo man, found and watched all your past videos. Thanks for your service and congrats on working through your dream build. A couple of years ago I wanted a CTD ram (all my previous rams were 1500s) and found RamBeast Projects here on youtube. He started out the same way you are learning and providing content to a group of people who rarely get actual information from users but usually the "bro" post and replies on forums. Keep us updated on the swap and how things perform. Suggestion: Do shorts or reviews of the components/tuner/turbo that you're running in depth and what works and what challenges you face with them. I'd like to throw my hat in for the lights. I'm a soon to graduate radiology student with a DRD deleted 2018 CC CTD. I switched careers at 35 to pursue my dreams of caring for people and as such we put life and mods on hold for the past few years. I'm just now getting back into modding the beast and find your videos really informative. Keep at it man.

    When you had the 3:42s what speed would your truck shift into 6th? I have 40s and Mine doesn’t shift into 6th until I got up to 75 mph and even then I’m only turning about 1300 rpm’s was thinking about doing 4:56s. Was also wondering if changing gears helped with fuel milage?

  • @okc_garage

    @okc_garage

    The larger the gear the higher the RPM is for the truck at higher speeds. With stock gears 3.42 I would be at like 1200 RPM at 80MPH. Since im at 4.30 gear ratio now my RPMs are up at 1800-2000 RPMs. The truck shifts alot better and isnt constantly up and downshifting at lower speeds. It also takes alot of stress off of the transmission with a higher gear ratio with larger tires. It rides better than stock.

    I'm a little late to the party but would like to add a little more information on your reply Erik. The reason for changing the final drive ratio like this also helps to restore the vehicle to manufacturers original drivability goals, such as fuel range, and rpm goal per gear. When you add the taller tire you increase the rotation required of the ring gear to reach speeds thus not allowing your turbo to ignite properly. 4.30 gears with 37" tires equals roughly a 3.42gear ratio

  • @tuber1234ish

    Did you have to do any tuning Calibrations after you switched gearing? I’m in the market of switching from 3:42 to either 3:73 or 4:10’s. Which do you recommend? Have the 68RFE along with the WC FAB 2nd gen swap

    I like your video. However it doesn't make sense swapping out gears with a 6-speed. The 68rfe has a 30% lower first gear then the 48 rfe. All you have to do is lock out six gear on Highway. Instead of spending the big dollars on swapping out the gears look for axles from a power wagon with factory lockers. They come 4.46 or 4.10. Then if you sell your original axles you come ahead pretty good financially versus changing the axles. Now what you do when you go to sell the truck if people don't want 37-in tall tires. I have 2006 Dodge mega cab with power wagon locking axles I have 37 inch tall tires but 48rfe. I will be installing a 68rfe. So this video show me what my truck would be like. I'll be very happy as I tow a lot of trailers and the lower gears will help get the load moving. Could somebody explain the reasons I may be wrong. Would you get better fuel economy in city driving with lower gears ?

    @@okc_garage Man, I'm sorry to hear that about DRD. Have you talked directly to CTT about getting tunes lately? I have CTT and the last time I talked to them (a few months ago) they weren't selling tunes directly to end users anymore. They told me that to get tunes I had to find a CTT vendor or apply for vendor status which requires a business license. And when I asked where I could find a vendor they never responded back. I ended up contacting Firepunk to get a friend's truck taken care. If CTT doesn't work out for you, maybe give Firepunk a try. But to be completely honest with you, CTT tunes and customer service aren't nearly as good as when Jonathan had the company as Higher Power Performance. I can't even run CTT's 3.0+ tuning on my truck because it drives like garbage. The 3.0 race tune felt like the HPP eco tune. So I'm still running the tunes Jonathan wrote for my truck a few years ago before he sold the company to CTT. Just a fyi if you end up going that direction.

    Sir gearing isn't magic for every 1 inch plus it minus your gearing changes by about 1/10th so if you had the worse factory automatic gear option of 3.42 and went up 5-6 inches in tires you'd be at 2.82-2.92 going to 4.30 and subtracting 5-6 tenths you arrive at 3.70-3.80 so basically gearing the same as factory 3.73 and stock tire ... my truck tows ok on 35s and factory 3.73 which are basically 3.33 now I said ..ok...it towed way better on the factory 265/70/17 I plan to gear swap to 4.30 that puts me at a 3.90 which should help with the added weight and rolling resistance not just the gearing also leaves me room to go 37s...folks who argue the merits of gear swap are just trying to justify not spending the money but Reality is you lose performance towing anything but a skidoo on flat ground.

    What the shit are you talking about losing power with deeper gears that's horse shit it's the other way around if you run numerically lower gears say 3.42 vs 4.10 you will have less pulling power .I think you got your shit backwards especially if you've upped your tire size from the factory 31-ish size to 35x12 or larger even with just 35s my truck needs to be run in a gear lower all the time towing the mountains than stock and that's with EFI live tuning even the egt run hotter due to the rpm not being low because while you can run 4th instead of 5th 3rd instead of 4th and so on the rpms still aren't optimal...lol...have you ever actually done a gear swap say in an off-road rig ? You sure don't lose power infact with stock gears in hi range you can't even move on anything but flat ground without a gear swap if you're in hi range .
