RAM 1500 Muffler Delete (5.7 HEMI) POWER LOSS + Backpressure Myth | 1 Year Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The RAM 1500 Muffler delete for the loud 5.7 HEMI may result in low end power and torque loss. Exhaust back pressure is a myth, however changing exhaust velocity and cylinder scavenging from installing the Muffler Delete pipe may result in some real low end power loss.
Sound wise this option is as good as it gets if you are looking for a loud, cheap, deep snarly V8 sound. Although I don't have a decent sound clip, you almost have to hear the Hemi in person with the muffler delete option on to really understand how awesome it sounds. Driving around town you get all kind of looks because when you step on the throttle its a crazy aggressive snappy sound. but when just cruising at city speeds the truck is decently quiet and won't make too much of scene.
DRONE. At highway speeds this muffler delete pipe has a nasty drone. right around 110-120km/h the drone is pretty bad. so if you are driving a lot of highway km/h I would strongly caution you on this option.
COUNTRY DRIVING. Surprisingly this muffler delete is actually really quiet around 90-95km/h. So if you live in the country and don't drive with a lead foot you are going to enjoy this option because when just cruising around under 100km/h it's pretty quiet. But as soon as you drop a gear and get to about 2500 RPM, look out. Folks will hear you in the next county.
POWER LOSS. Yes unfortunately it looks like this muffler delete pipe just thrown into the mix will rob you of some low end power. I briefly go into what cylinder scavenging and exhaust velocity are and why they are pretty important for an engine to run at optimum power and efficiency. When you open up the exhaust system and make it less restrictive you are effecting the cylinder scavenging and essentially slightly throwing off the air fuel mixture that the engine is tuned and is expecting to have based upon factory scavenging characteristics.
Long story short. Backpressure is a myth but the conclusion is the same having a properly tuned exhaust system is best way to run a modern day engine. How much power is actually lost is up for debate. I couldn't come across any dyno number specifically for the RAM but after reading the forms it seems like a lot of guys were complaining about low end power loss which would theoretically make sense.
Solution is either you get the 5.7 HEMI tuned for a muffler delete or you dig into the wallet and buy a properly engineered and tuned exhaust system for the HEMI.
Hope you guys liked the video!

Muffler delete shouldn’t affect the engine at all. Air fuel mixture is based off the O2 sensor’s lecture of the exhaust gas before the catalytic converter. If the air fuel mixture is not correct, the PCM will change fuel delivery to achieve a perfect ratio. A four stoke engine has to have 0 restriction to it’s exhaust to perform any power. Therefore removing the muffler by a straight pipe shouldn’t change the flow of the exhaust. However changing the size of the exhaust pipe will have an impact on how fast the exhaust gas flow. Variable valve timing and adaptive fuel trim will correct any change in the engine performance, so even then no gain or loss in power should be observed. I would say that a feeling of power loss after a muffler delete is more a placebo effect than anything else.

  • @TheGettyAdventures

I mean potentially. I don't have dyno numbers and merely made this video to see why people were complaining about power loss and realistically the amount of potential power loss is going to be minimal. The reason I would disagree with you however is because no matter how well the PCM can manage the fuel. It can't add air or oxygen into the cylinder on a N\A engine. So if the cylinder scavenging is affected in a negative way and can't suck as much fresh air or oxygen into the cylinder you are going to end up with less power. of course the PCM is going to manage to fuel accordingly but if there is less oxygen to burn you can't add as much fuel to keep to that stoichiometric ratio. the Scavenging effect on a N/A engine is well documented to increase torque and horsepower. So I think the question is how much does a muffler delete really effect the scavenging on the 5.7 Hemi and I don't know the answer. but still an interesting topic. The VVT is interesting though, That could potentially effect the total valve over lap if needed. I don't know if that would correct for scavenging issues. Let me know that you think I'm curious now.

From my experience in motorcycles the torque curve can be effected greatly by the type of exhaust. Packing, length, diameter. Straight pipes always lose torque over a muffler unless your engine is specifically built for a special application. (Racing) that being said those engines would gain torque with a muffler but they want high rpm hp and would lose that. There’s also the argument of heat. Straight pipes lower head temp and egt. Turbos are a different can of worms all together. Without typing 10000 words I’m just saying most people don’t tune their engines properly for the intake and exhaust they have.

Your science is garbage... Get the exhaust out as fast as you can... Did my exhaust to free flow and improved my mpg and sounds badass. Did that over 30k miles ago after the warranty ran out 👍. The power loss is in your foot! Use the dayum tow mode and won't matter 👍 you're overthinking it bro

I do enjoy having my muffler back on when I'm going for long stretches for driving. But a apart of me misses the loud screaming exhaust.
