Rat noises like these aren't necessarily a bad thing btw. Yall're right in saying the squeak basically means it's submitting or surrendering, but power grooming and these kinds of vocalisations are important parts of how a rat's family and hierarchy works. In this situation, this rat is basically accepting you as being the boss of it. Playfighting etc are normal in rats, and if the rat is letting you keep doing this, it means he trusts you and acknowledges your position as the boss

I never thought I'd ever like rats. Then my X- girlfriend got two and I grew to like them so much. I just would put em on my shoulder like a parrot and they would chill with me watching TV. Great video, your rat is lucky to have a great person like you in their life👍 I only wish rats lived longer because they are truly great pet's.

My rats squeak like that when they are being "power groomed". Basically your hand was dominating him and he was saying, "I surrender! I surrender!". They do it to each other so it's harmless, but those aren't exactly happy noises.

Rats cannot perceive a threat or an enemy as authority. As long as the rat has enough space to start wrestling out, I'd just consider this a social interaction. That being said, rats have very distinct, different personalities from one another, that includes sounds they make, behaviour they display and even the food they decide to eat.

It's just play, rats do it all the time if you hand wrestle them it's them surrendering, you'll hear it with forced grooming between rats

I have rats and a cat, my cat is more scared of them than they are of him. Rats can usually stand their ground if they have to. I just keep them separate though, my cat knows to leave them alone and doesn't even go near their cage anymore.

@@trippingazzi7741 You're partially right, it wasn't scared exactly, but it wasn't enjoying it either. This is what rats do when they've been dominated and they want the play to stop. It doesn't look painful, but the rat isn't enjoying it either.

There is research showing that high pitched noises (the classic rodent screech) is associated with bad things, and extremely high pitched sounds (way out of human hearing range) is how they communicate with each other when happy. It turns out that they seem to have a language… which we have yet to decipher. Anyway this is a happy rat, making the lowest frequency it can, so that it knows its human can hear it. Amazing creatures!

I mean, in the case of domestic rats, them squeaking very well could just be like how cats meow at humans, we struggle to hear their normal interaction sounds, and they're smart enough to recognise that we respond more often to those sounds, so they use those almost exclusively with us.

No, just no. This is not a happy sound at all. That’s a submissive squeak they make when being power groomed. Basically saying “I give up don’t hurt me” you have no idea what you are talking about lol. Clearly never even interacted with rats. I own four, work for the humane society, and have had 8 total my entire life so far.

I had a hamster when i was young he had a killing spree of 4 because he killed every hamster my brother got and one day he choked himself to death with the cage god knows how he lifted it up
