Ralph Bakshi's Wizards - Religion Scene

Ойындар

The famed animator doesn't think much of religion in this scene from Ralph Bakshi's Wizards.

For some reason I feel like these guys and the other troops were inspirations for 21 and 24 from the Venture bros. They work for someone who is both evil and obsessive over beating a lazy drunk "Hero". But they almost treat it like a job and do witty banter with each other to get through the day. Best parts of the film are with these guys, the they killed fritz scene and the fat guy are all great.

Bakshi's story, the one in his memoir, notes he and his parents were in Palestine at the outbreak of WWII. They were Krymchak Jews, Jews whose time in the land (1st century) well-predates Zionism, possibly even the Talmud itself. When they fled Palestine, there were already Ashkenazi settlers who came there under the Haavara Agreement. The Bakshi's effectively fled the burgeoning Jewish colony there. Why? The Arab revolt of 1936-39. They were stopped by a Nazi ship on their way to NY, but ultimately allowed to pass. Remember too, Bakshi identifies himself as an Atheist, had a distaste for Disney, CBS, ABC, and all the many mainstream companies he worked for. CBS too by the way, was a project of Mr. William S. Paley. I feel this context may give you some ideas of where his satire in this scene, and this movie, comes from.

I think your parents did a great job raising you, because they obviously taught you to “get the point” of what god “really” wants us to do. It also reminds me of Doctor Manhattan from Alan Moore’s Watchmen and how the character himself is an allegory for god and the fact that god will not use his power to get rid of all the bad things because we need to learn to solve our own problems. Like you said, we all have two hands and a brain, therefore we should use them, just as god intended

@1:02 "We hates'ta interrupt'ya-" "We're sahrry!" "Yeah! But uhh..." Despite the grim reality of the scene, I earnestly smiled at that delivery. In general, the *bad guy* capable of being "normal" and polite/decent until provoked is such an excellent base for good humor and depth (even if they're just one-dimensional pillocks haha). I've always appreciated Bakshi's work and wanted to like it, but just couldn't ever get past how weird and disjointed it generally is from moment to moment. The humor generally escapes me from feeling like an assembly of things that were funny in the moment of writing that fall flat - like a string of "you just had to be there" references that always make you feel a bit dumb for saying to anyone outside that moment. But _this_ exchange? It broke past the above personal issues of "comedy elitism" and genuinely humored me, and it's clearly worth rambling about to no-one in particular on the internet, haha. I want to say that I should give this film a rewatch since it's easily been a decade after the last viewing, but maybe it's the isolation from compounding internal groans and emotional eye rolling that allows this clip to shine for me. Maybe the essential Ralph Bakshi wasn't the films he's made, but the clips that come from them along the way
