Amazing Screw-On Head

*I do not own any rights to this video, the story, or the characters.*
This is the pilot episode for what was to be a series on the Sci-fi Channel based on the comic book Amazing Screw-On Head, written and drawn by Mike Mignola. Unfortunately, it was not picked up.
Screw-On Head (Paul Giamatti) - Literally a screw-on head, apparently made of metal; Abraham Lincoln's top agent in occult matters. He was well over a hundred years old at the time of the American Civil War. Nothing is known about his origins.
Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce) - Highly intelligent and articulate for a zombie; he apparently brought about his own undead state using ancient, forbidden knowledge, out of a lust for power.
Mr. Groin (Patton Oswalt) - Screw-On Head's ninth manservant. He aids Screw-On Head in many ways, including acting as a surrogate body.
Abraham Lincoln (Corey Burton) - The President of the United States and Screw-On Head's boss.
Patience (Molly Shannon) - Vampire lover of Emperor Zombie. Renamed Patience in the pilot, while mortal she was the only woman Screw-On Head ever loved.
Aggie and Geraldine (Mindy Sterling) - Two of Zombie's servants. One is a werewolf, the other a cannibal who takes over Dr. Snap's role from the original comic.

2D animation costs ALOT of money to produce to be honest. I loved this, but I can see that they cut a ton of corners with the animation, so at times it looks really cheap. Especially with the complex shadows and style of the characters. For this to be successful it would need to not only have to extremely popular and win over test audiences, it would also have to find some way to streamline the animation, without it looking so bad. Cause stylistically it's amazing. But animation wise it's mediocre at best.

Money. I was actually surprised to see Mignola's style animated at all. With all the complex shadows it looks like it would take a shitload to animate properly. Even in this pilot you can see some very obvious parts where they had to cut corners. The lips on human characters don't sync great and for a couple bits they would just bob an actor up and down. It's also niche enough that it's unlikely it would ever attract the kind of ratings to make up for the production costs. On the studio's part it's way to large of a risks. An idea has to be resource efficient as well as cool. Most of the really nice stuff your gonna see is ether one-off pilots like this, youtube animators who do it on their own time or movies made by big ass companies who can hire big ass celebrities to put asses in seats.

Unfortunately, I can totally see why it wasn't picked up: I imagine animation like this takes a lot of time and money, and this show has a very bizarre sense of humor, and producers need to think about how a general audience would take such weird jokes like these. From what I understand, just as the comic was a one-shot that wasn't intended to be a continuing series (the story is based on a character that had originally been an idea Mignola had for an action figure), the pilot episode seems to have followed suit; meant to seem like the first in many installments, but not intended to be stretched that thin. It kinda adds to the greatness of it that this one self-contained story can be so fuckin amazing without any further context.

It's great, but it's also a niche animated series in a style that can be hard to animate, so I can completely get why a network that doesn't have a notable animation studio wouldn't think it's worth the price to run a full season. Still, though, it would have been the best publicity the channel could have gotten and it's a shame they passed it up.
