Rally Car Build Explained

Rally cars experience some of the harshest conditions you'll find in motorsport. As a result, rally cars require a lot of modifications and changes to perform at their best and survive on a proper rally stage. Team O'Neil instructor and rally mechanic Jarred Ainsworth takes you on a tour of a rally prepped Ford Fiesta ST and talks about what modifications are made and why. Feel free to ask questions and leave comments!

    They are AP Racing GRAVEL spec calipers (I don't know if they are the R5 ones or the R2T class ones they are using there?), made to work with high ET number (backspacing), 6"-7" wide, 15" gravel rally wheels, without needing spacers. But yeah, $$$$$$!

    Im trying to get into other aspects of motor sport, as i like touge races (not drifting in it though, if that makes sence), i like muscle cars quite a bit, like the z28(chevy), 78 firebird, and some cool drag built hondas. But im trying to learn about rally/ offroad. When i was a kid i absolutley loved offroading vehichles, like jeeps, dirtbikes, and i sort of liked rally cars, but ive never reaserched about them. Ive only watched rally races because of the impresive speed and consentration while under so much stress trying not to crash into a tree or flip over. Thanks for the info.

    A REAL gravel (or tarmac for that matter) rally suspension, like the Reiger one in the above video, will co$t you between $7000 and $10,000 US dollars (new at least). Used/rebuilt a little bit less. Just use a good set of Bilstein B6 dampers, and the factory springs, and you can go anywhere (with the correct tires) as long as you are not traveling at rally stage speeds.

    Does anyone know if a part time all wheel drive system would be good for rally or should I just find something full time? Or is there anything I should be concerned about? (Btw yes I know the difference thx to team O'Neal lol)

  • @nasa444444

    @nasa444444

    Think the answer is probably it depends on the system. From what I know, I would think in rally a full time system would be better. Since, disengaging and re-engaging the drivetrains probably is dependent on some system which adds an additional point of failure. If I base myself on this video alone, for rally u want reliability so I'm guessing the part time all wheel drive system might not be the way to go.

    Hi, i have a 1.4 fiesta mk7 and i want to transform it in a little rally car. In the past few years i have changed many cars but for some reason i got in love with my little fiesta... I have changed many parts in my fiesta since i bought it till now and now i want to do some serious upgrades to my fiesta. I want to change the engine head cos the camshaft it's on it's way and i want to turn it into 1.6 witch it's not very hard but the main thing that i want to do is to make it 4wd and i looked at some videos and i have a roughly idea but i still didn't find the righ gearbox that's gonna fit. Can you guys give me some ideas or some help to find the right thing? Or can you make a video to help me and many others that they wanna do an upgrade like me. Many thanks.

    Rallycross is indeed the way to go with a stock car to get used to the feel and get "seat time" in, plus cross events typically don't require a roll cage though they are recommended (rally cross courses don't involve the significant terrain changes that stage rally cars encounter and thus the likelihood of rolling is greatly reduced). Good luck - hope to see you out there someday.

    In the USA, NONE of them ever had a limited slip available, EVER, even as an option, from the factory. In England/Europe, only the very limited production M-Sport Edition ST200 had the same Quaife limited slip installed by M-Sport for the Mk7 (late 2013 to 2019 in the USA, 2013 to late 2016 everywhere else) cars at least. Not sure about the Brit/Euro/rest of world Mk8s (2017 model year and up over there), but I do believe that a limited slip is a factory option on those STs.

    Those front brakes, and the Reiger R2 suspension are almost the co$t of a decent, lower mileage, street Fiesta ST all by themselves! 😱 Do you change the knuckles/uprights back to the base Fiesta versions in order to fit/have the Reigers work properly on the ST?? Is there a reason you did not change the hubs to 5 bolt in order to take advantage of the greater choice in rally wheels out there (those 4x108 PCD, R1 class, silver M-Sport O.Z. Racing 'disc' gravel wheels are LONG LONG gone, save for whatever few undamaged ones you have left in your inventory!)?? You are NOT doing any actual customer rally car builds anymore out of the school location, correct?? So then WHO would you send a potential Fiesta (Open 2WD, or Limited 2WD) ST or otherwise to for a full build, or even the bespoke parts you no longer manufacture (like the skid plate), and sources for the kevlar protection (besides the insanely priced M-Sport Poland stuff)??? Is there a rust proof, and non-destructive way to install big SMS sourced, rally mud flaps onto a street Fiesta ST without using the way too flimsy (for working on ARA Rallies) Rally Armor mounting hardware? Are the rivets on that car going into the actual fender metal edges, or the front plastic inner wheel well liner??
