Making use of an old Bomber frame and a few parts I had lying about. It's took a bit of work but it's a lot more comfortable and useable than a "standard" Bomber now.

    @@MonkeyShred I have a Bianchi Lynx that I'm working on that came with a Girvin elastomer fork that has froze up. It's a deep purple framed bike, and the rigid fork I put on is a beautiful teal from a Raleigh that completely clashes, but I don't want to paint because of the attractive color. Anyhow, they're old bikes, and the offset color just seems to work, especially if I can find a paint that closely matches so I could color key the stem and handlebar. Which I guess is just my roundabout way of saying that you're not the only one in this boat.

    If you want to “repair” the chrome you can rub it with silver foil. It reverses the oxidation as Al is much more reactive the Fe. Great build as always.

    Yup. I know that trick. I wasn't too fussed here though.

  • @sodalitia

    @sodalitia

    It doesn't rly reverse oxidation. It just acts like a mild sand paper that doesn't scratch chrome, but removes rust that bubbled through the micropores in damaged chrome. It's temporary solution as the spot will rust again when moisture gets into the steel through existing gaps in chrome plating.

    Nice result; the Bull Moose cockpit really fits the theme of the build. If the spider of that crank is still straight, you can find lots of those 118 chainrings on FleaBay (my '84 Trek came with the same crank) if you laze out on swapping to a triple. Apparently, that 118 BCD was an old Ofmega standard.

    The crankset might not be bent (it probably is, but..) it may be that the faces of the square taper don't mesh well with the hole in the crank arm - i.e. the crankset is not quite sitting right on the axle. I've struck this with nearly every square taper crankset - it'll have one orientation which it lines up / fits better than the other three. When mounting the crankset, try it in all positions - loosely mount it on the axle and give it a spin - in all 4 orientations (0 degrees, 90 degrees round from that, another 90 degrees and yet another 90 degrees) and see which one keeps the chainrings in their rotational plane best. Might help, might not, but I thought I'd mention it. Keep up the great work; cheers from New Zealand :)

    Greetings... Save your shillings.. You do not need to replace the crank.. it can be straightened reasonably well by force..Bicycle research ( no longer in business ) used to make a crank -chain ring straightening tool.. I am sure that you can fashion one out of a piece of steel... I found that a back of a hack saw blade makes for a great scraper in removing paint.. It looks like Raleigh used the lugs and fittings from the Tourist .. (DL-1) when they made the frame.. I am sure that the bike will be a great cruiser.. long wheelbase and stable..not too nervous.. Had what I thought was similar bent crank on a Specialized Carve I was asked to sort out recently. With the pandemic lots of people are raiding the back of the garage or buying some thing someones flogging off cheap. It needed quite a bit of work and had been well abused, but it turned out the chainring wasn't bent - instead the Snail brand cheap as chips chainring off fleabay had a smaller inner radius than the SRAM crankset and the bolts had been forced to make it fit but still stand proud on two bolts. A little filing of the chainring and all was well and one fixed bike after correcting umpteen bodge jobs.. I think the shell width was the real problem not the thread.

    Yeh, unfortunately you can't. Raleigh use 26tpi, not 24tpi. There's also the issue of the 77mm shell.

    You have wrecked an iconic bike I had a raleigh bomber when I was ten and if it looked any thing like that pile of shit you have I would have not been happy.all you have done is made it look shit stop now before you wreck more classic bikes

    Oh Lee. Nothing fills my heart with joy more than seeing someone rage at one of my creations. Thank you ❤️ The Bomber is a classic of sorts, I’ll agree with that but the ride is awful as standard. Heavy chrome rims and long reach callipers are terrible for braking. The 3 speed SA is ok but hauling that heavy frame and components around it lacks in any sort of real performance and ride ability. The saddle and bars don’t do much for comfort either. It deserved some upgrades to make it a better ride. I’m actually now tempted to customise my other Bomber too. Thanks!
