Rajneesh in Oregon: 1985 KGW Archive Documentary

1985 documentary update on the Rajneeshpuram in Oregon following the Baghwan and Sheela's arrest.
In the early 1980s, there was a takeover of the small Eastern Oregon town of Antelope by thousands of worldwide followers of the Indian mystic Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The group was responsible for the largest bio-terror attack in the United States when they infused salad bars in Wasco County restaurants with salmonella. There were also assassination plots against top Oregon federal and state officials and a newspaper investigative reporter.

@@NetSkillNavigator because if it's the latter, I think you're missing a lot of historical context. Nuclear war isn't especially a threat right now, compared to 1950-80s history. Race based lynchings and violence isn't especially a threat compared to 1880s-1950s history. Disease isn't remotely as threatening as it was before the Age of Vaccines, which wiped out way worse offenders than modern COVID. Gang violence isn't any worse than it was in the 1980s to 1990s. The US may still be a frightening place. But saying that it's *especially* frightening now, compared to history, on any metric other than information gathering (which is at a worldwide increase in the internet/information age), just sounds ignorant of history.

Today's young generation all over the world is extremely fed up with the way political and religious leaders are behaving. They can see clearly the harm those so-called leaders have done to society. Young people no longer have faith in any organized religion or a political system. Therefore, they are looking for an alternative to the present corrupt system. They are looking for a role model but this time that role model is not in the form of a goody-goody hero but a villain. Therefore, all these attempts to vilify Osho are going to backfire. Mark my word, he is increasingly becoming popular as the 'coolest prophet' ever to walk on the earth.

Reading the book 'Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic' has helped me to understand the real Osho. A very good read, by the way. His childhood, his university days, his travelling round India as a university professor in the 1950s. Genuine intelligent truth-seekers from all walks of life came to him and were very satisfied with his very advanced teachings. But he was always a bit mischievous, and always had a go at all forms of ignorance and hypocrisy. His choice of Ma Anand Sheela as his practical executive when his health was so delicate proves to have been 'not ideal' but this was a pioneering time of expansion. He genuinely came to the USA to get the expert medical help he needed having been exerting himself for about 27 solid years for the sake of his followers and the world as a whole. In India he had faced persecution from many different quarters because he challenged ignorance and falsehood. Once you peel away the slick labeling by news media and the US Government , you discover a highly intelligent and caring man - but often perplexing and paradoxical. Out of 400 books that he wrote, of course the media and others picked up on one particular book ('From Sex to Superconsciousness' ) and completely distorted what he was saying.

Rhonda , you can say the same about other fantastic books - eg. such as' Man's Eternal Quest' by Paramahansa Yogananda. The collected essays in such books are extremely profound and make excellent reading. They are based on talks/lectures he gave. As a writer, I can tell you that to be able to talk in this way is very impressive indeed - MORE impressive than someone slaving over a writing desk for weeks. He has such clarity of mind, a direct connection with universal wisdom.

  • @sunnylotus1

Rhonda, in actual fact he had moved to superconsciousness at the age of 21 yrs in 1953. You do not need physical sex once you are in the superconscious state. All people's guessing about his sex life are just projections from their own warped minds. As Osho says, this is an age where we can get our selves clean of all repressions, get stuff out of your system daily and then meditate. He recognized that many westerners had huge sexual repressions and hangups which were blocking their ability to meditate and get into 'silence'.

I was at the trials in Charlotte.. before they were taken back to Oregon...there was a vendor selling tshirts outside the courthouse.. they had a pic of bhagwan behind bars... I bought a t-shirt, it also had thw statement, "I bagged the bhagwan"...lol... all my sanyas friends thought it was hilarious.. bhagwan would have laughed at this...im not sure if he saw them, i believe he would have loved to have one...his sense of humor was playful...but this dramatic power play, this whole thing was completely ridiculous...Sheila was a psychotic lunatic, completely obsessed. All of the plotting and planning was her doing. she screwed it all up trying to get around the law. she neglected their tax responsibility in Puna. Then comes to the US and tries to skirt the truths, and says this,&did the opposite. causing confusion, and implicating the entire community. there are a lot of European sanyasans that were in India before the relocation. she was the the one that came up with the marriage coup. after the moonie mass wedding. she had low level intelligence. more of a gangster mentality. Bhagwan was kept in the dark about details pertaining to business&finance as well as her urging illegally marriages. It was all Sheila she's the one that planned all this and manipulated all this to try to gain political control to gain power over the land. it was all Sheila not Bhagwan. when it was decided they would move the group to the US, Instead of moving through proper channels she just went renegade. only problem was she led the movement with her ego. when she could not bully or buy what she wanted, she would degredate her opposition, closing down any future negotiations. she sucker punched &terrorized the small town of antelope. everything she did was like banging 100 drums at once , in their faces, blowing a raspberry& telling them to go fuck themselves. Her behavior was anti social, loud and offensive. she was suffering from extreme grandiose, had a circle of like minded minions, all convinced they were martyrs fighting the good fight. polar opposites of everything Bhagwan was trying to share with the people that loved him. The devastating choices & descions being made were not revealed to the inner circle that handled day to day functions at the ranch. they were basically told what she thought they wanted to hear, all her efforts revolved around not spending money on proper channels, getting around bureaucratic red tape. before antelope, in india they oshram was operated on a meager eco system financially. more communal. the Californian sanyasans were the game changers. the money rolled in hand over fist. she exploited the action of un-attachment, adding a new twist, dont just walk away from the material world on you path to a higher understanding, liquidate and send the funds to Bhagwan. this narrative began when the tax exempt status was retracted in india. Creative financing. had she gone ahead and cooperated with the tax collectors and brought the living quarters up to code, the move to Oregon would not have been necessary. Bhagwans health was waining, she fained loyalty to him as her need for power increased. he trusted her because of the love she professed for him, &believed her devotion would guide her in her ability to run the machine that was in motion as more people discovered his philosophy. big mistake, thère are alot of people that cannot handle positions of power and turn into dictators. his trust in her spawned entitlement issues, as well as over inflated her ego, to the point that she forgot her place was to run the business, instead she crowned her self queen & ruled instead of serve. displaced loyalties, caused her to forget Bhagwans teachings, killing the positive message he expounded, that was why people sought him out. she did not execute her hitler like antics publicly. she wore a mask of humble pretense to prevent those close to Bhagwan from knowing the shenanigans she exercised, lying about any obstacles her double dealing brought into view. all the sneaky shit that snowballed as a result.

Thanks a lot for this historical document! It is much appreciated to see what happened at that time about Osho and the Rajneeshpuram. However, people who are not informed about the insightful content of Osho teachings will not see the injustice of how he has been treated at the time. Never a word inciting to violence was ushered by Osho... 🕊️

I´m a sannyasin and a man of Veeresh and Osho. And watching this video of all these sannyasins being interviewed, my first feeling and thought is that they are so aware and clear in their eyes thanks to their meditations. They are so beautiful because they are very authentic without no visable programming or conditioning. It´s so difficult to explaining Osho and the sannyasin movement. They were not perfect, but imperfect. They were loving and caring and very loveable. The Reagan and the FBI were so afraid of Osho, that´s why they poisoned him. He was clearly a threat to the society beacuse he was against corrupt politicians and he was against war. And that pissed off the satanist banking elite and its deep state. But don´t ever confuse Osho with new-age. Aleister Crowley, who was a freemason, came with new-age. Osho came with love and friendship. Love to him.

I agree. I would also add that Osho was against all organized religions and was seen as a great threat to the organized Christian 'religion' in the great USA and beyond. Hence the Pope at that time was in contact with the U.S. politicians and government agencies to have him removed and the ashram in Oregon to be shut down, irresepective of the wrongdoings by Sheela and her group. Setting up such a bold community in Oregon was always going to be tricky.

But he never forced his beliefs on any of the persons who went to his lectures or read his teachings. They even let him speak at UN if you can believe that.I don't think the Rajneesh movement is just "imperfect". It's more like a cult as far as I can see. My teachers are more like Socrates and Krishnamurti. They left a legacy based on critical thinking first and foremost. They were not "gurus".

I think focusing on a limited negative things and associating it with OSHO name is a biased attitude. Actions of Judas are not the actions of Jesus. Actions of Devadatta are not the action of Budhha. There are always negative personalities around Enlightened people just because they are totally open and do not reject anybody. Oregon is blessed when Osho put its feet here and Rajneeshpuram was a heaven on earth. Whole of the town was vegetarian with hundred of new recipes created. 102 new meditation techniques were developed . It was a gathering of cream of humanity with world class scientists, doctors, poets and thinkers. Even homeless people got a chance and if their vote right was not denied, many of them might be still living there and one of them might be mayor of that city today. The peaceful loving people initially had no weapons for self protection and no interest outside ranch. But their hotel was was bombed while living peacefully. To-date, not even a single suspect was captured for that crime as authorities/locals never had any intention to help Osho lovers but punish. But when it came other way, even perceptions became real crime stories and enough material for propaganda against Osho. Life of people at ranch was made miserable by locals. Sanyasins have to drive to Anetelope to make even a single phone call because any kind of business at Ranch was made "illegal" because it was illegal to build/commercialize in "farming land". I feel criminal "Sheela" might have never born if she was not surrounded by big sophisticated criminals all around outside called "locals" or biased politicians. Life of millions of people turned positive with Osho. There will be millions more humans in coming decades and centuries who will benefit from Osho. It is time to pick a Osho book to enjoy and attend a nearby mediation center. Negativity will help Osho's message to shine even more but may be harmful to the negative individual who can just waste life trying to spit on the Moon above.

Blast from the past!! I had most of Bhagwan's books, and then I started seeing in the news about his followers, and what a surprise. After seeing a news report that his followers had sprayed ...... what was it? A bacteria, e. coli perhaps, on a salad bar in Antelope so people would get sick and not be able to vote in some upcoming election, thus the takeover of Antelope by Bhagwan and his followers would be complete. I gave my Bhagwan's books away after hearing about the behavior of Bhagwan and his followers. Also, I remember these people taking on Indian names!!
