Raising Lazarus | John 11 | Gary Hamrick

09/04/2022
In one of the most beloved stories in the Bible, Jesus shows compassion, tenderness, and emotion in response to a very sad and tragic event-the untimely death of a close, personal friend named Lazarus.
Although Lazarus’ sisters, Martha and Mary, had asked Jesus to come quickly, Jesus delayed coming until Lazarus had died so that He could display a greater miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead! In this story from John 11, Pastor Gary answers two questions: (1) what does it teach us about Jesus that we should emulate? and (2) what does it teach us about death that we should anticipate? Follow along in today’s study entitled, “Raising Lazarus.”
00:00 - Introduction
13:36 - 1.) Jesus is never frantic or anxious (about anything!)
17:54 - 2.) Jesus is not driven by emotion; He is guided by devotion (to the Father)
23:32 - 3.) God’s delay is often for His display
30:48 - 4.) Death is not a destination; it’s a transition
32:48 - 5.) Death is a reunion with friends and loved ones who are also Believers
35:13 - 6.) Death is not the end; it’s the beginning of eternal life

Jn 11:4 - When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. I believe that jesus wept when he came to the grave was because of the above scripture. That God was going to be glorified. And many Jews came to believe in Him because of this miracle.. Yes. Jesus definitely can understand our emotions but in this instance, he wept that the Son of God was going to be glorified. Having come across so much doubt, unbelief and resistance esp amongst the learned Jews.

Our Lord said, "Amen, Amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send, receives Me and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me (John 13:20; Matt 10:40) and "Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Whoever rejects you rejects Me and rejects the One who sent Me (Luke 10:16)". Therefore, in order for us to receive and listen to Christ Our Savior, we need to receive and listen to the one Our Lord sent and not anyone else. Who are the ones Our Lord sent to us for our salvation? They are the Apostles and their successors, the ministers of His Church built on Peter (Matt 16:18-19, 28:19-20). Through the teachings of these ministers, the dispenser of the mysteries of God (1 Cor 3:5, 4:1), we learn the True Faith revealed by Our Lord and become true believers and members of His Mystical Body (Col 1:18, 1 Cor 12:27, Eph 5:23), the Church. St. Paul said, "Remember your prelates who have spoken the word of God to you; whose Faith follow. Jesus Christ, yesterday, today, and the same forever; and, not be lead away with various and strange doctrines (Heb 13:7-9). Obey your prelates and be subject to them; for they watch as being to render account of your souls (Heb 13:17)." Our Lord made it clear that, in order for us to be saved, we must follow the teachings of His Church (Mark 16:16), One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church with whom He and Holy Spirit remain always until the end of ages (John 14:16-17, Matt 28:20). Whoever, Our Lord did not send or who reject the teachings of His Church, are wolves in sheep's clothing and, therefore, shouldn't be listened to and must be avoided. He that knows God, hears us. He that is not of God, hears us not. By this we know the spirit of Truth and the spirit of error (1 John 4:6).

You can change your loved ones to believe, but keep praying. I don’t think we will remember those who are not in heaven, because if we did we be sad and the bible says in heaven there is no tears or pain. But there is always hope that they will believe even in the last seconds of their lives.

Dear friends, there is a Messianic Jewish teacher Arnold Fruchtenbaum who explained why Jesus waited two days, why He said the illness is for the glory of God, and why the Pharisees went bonkers when they found out. This applies also to the healing of the man born blind. These were miracles only the Messiah could perform: raise someone on the fourth day and heal someone born blind. Jesus had proven He is the Messiah.

Sassy Sisters? Another look at Mary and Martha's greeting might be similar to what we observed in the kitchen. Martha filled with duty; Mary filled with wonder. For Martha, the delay went against Jewish "duty" to mourn appropriately. For Mary we see important words before she states the exact same thing to Jesus . . ."if you had been here, my brother would not have died," said Martha. . .and Mary remained seated. That behavior is something we saw previously. Martha in movement/Mary seated. Then, Mary does something very different with those same words. . .she falls at his feet (vs. 32) and repeats what her sister says in a VERY different position. Prostrate. On the ground. Is she making a true statement without condemnation? Perhaps, because Jesus is moved by her. . .not by Martha.

Lazarus was not the only person raised from the dead. Why would it be this raising and not another that the disciples would believe. Was it how long he was dead? They would see "the glory." The story of the rich man and Lazarus is not supposed to be about the same Lazarus. The poor Lazarus was clearly a servant in a rich man's household. Both men named Lazarus are exceptional men of faith. And if Bethany is a place of the poor, there are two or three important similarities--exceptional faith, poverty and having a story to tell of what the next life may be like.
