Raise Your Expectations: How Saints Live Differently

Ойын-сауық

Fr. Mark-Mary talks about how to live your best life (but in a Catholic way).
When we read the lives of the saints, we could be inclined to think that they were way more holy than us, and that they had these extraordinary gifts that made it easy for them to become saints. It’s easy to think that becoming a saint is an unrealistic goal. But the truth is, the saints were just like us. They just chose to live differently, and we can too.
“Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
A lot of the time, in trying to judge whether we’re living a life centered in Christ, we compare ourselves to those around us, especially nonbelievers. The problem with this is that, just as it says in Romans 12, we’re not called to be good or better by the world’s standards. We’re called to be saints. And to be saints, it’s going to require an outlook that doesn’t compare ourselves to those around us, but to strive for the perfection of Heaven.
How can we do this? The answer is a little different for everyone, but it all consists in following the life of Christ, and living in accordance with his teachings. Things like committing ourselves to daily prayer, avoiding sin, performing works of charity; all of these things allow ourselves to transcend this world and reach for the eternal. Everything we do to strengthen our relationship with Christ gets us one step closer to being saints.
The saints were people who saw this life on earth as an opportunity to better themselves for the sake of the Kingdom. It’s something that each of us can consciously choose to do every day. The beauty of this approach is that, the more we surrender ourselves to the Lord in little ways, the easier it becomes to surrender in larger ways. Powerhouse saints like St. Francis and St. Clare didn’t just magically surrender every part of themselves to Christ; it all started with little things like saying a morning offering every morning, or refraining from gossiping, or volunteering at their local charity. And this is what we are all called to do.
Instead of judging the success of your life by looking at those around you, look instead to the Church and the lives of the saints, and ask yourself “What more can I do to give my life to Christ?” We aren’t called to be conformed to the world, but to transform it through our faith and our witness. How does our knowledge of what the world values compare to our knowledge of what the Church values, and how can we live today as a saint in-the-making?

    Hi Jessica, well said you are praying for progress and perseverance. I felt my progress was in the same order as in the parable of the sower, although previously I had thought it would apply to different types of people. In my personal experience and looking back, I realised that first, the Word was falling by the way side. Later on in stony places because, yes and definitely, there was not much deepness in me in my relationship with God. The third stage for me was among thorns, in the midst of tribulation after tribulation, my mind was so full of serious worries that it was choking the Word. I was thinking what the point was many times, I could not even remember the easiest passages but I would not give up, fell and up, fell and up, tried everything I could think of to move forward. I can see now the Word is slowly falling into the good ground but I am not all there yet.... It was a very long process for me. I concluded 1) God has to do a lot of work in some of our hearts before it becomes good ground for His Word. 2) He wants you to seek Him with all your heart. He is along with us all the way and appreciates that we do not give up, that we move forward relentlessly, and that we will not stop to the point where we found ourselves seeking Him with all our hearts. "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." ... - Hebrews 11:6

    Catholic revert here and relearning my Faith. Never knew we were called to be Saints until recently. Few mass readings have touched on it. And got to say feel like not devoting enough time to God. Jesus did say we are in the world but not of it. Not comparing ourselves seems right. You have confirmed some things that i believe God has been showing me. Let's pull the tapes off and release the balloon. 🙏📿

    Father, thank you for the lesson and reminder about our priorities in this life. Being a bit better at Catholicism than everyone else is akin to moral relativism. I don't think God grades us on a curve, but on what we actually do in life. If we can slowly inculcate goodness into our mind and hearts, and increase our faith, we are on the right road. Overall, such a challenge of catechesis for us! God bless!

    While in this world because of the effects of original sin people are inclined too commit sin because of the desires of the flesh. When our bodies die so does the desires of the flesh but the unhealthy attachments too those desires might still remain which is why there is a possibility the person might be saved through a final purification after death called Purgatory in order to detach them from those unhealthy attachments or if there is no possible way as the person is unwilling to detach themselves there soul remains in Hell forever. The saints in Heaven no longer have the desires of the flesh nor the attachments towards the unhealthy desires. By all accounts they are without sin.

  • @Elven.

    @Elven.

    There's something a bit off with this concept for me under certain lights. God made humans to be flesh and spirit. In the resurrection of the bodies we will get our bodies back. He made our human nature, we can't live resenting every feeling we have because everything we want is just a bad attachment. Wouldn't it be cruel to create a creature with wants and needs and then tell it not to BE what it is by nature because it's all sin? and after that asking this creature to love you? The human if it's not physically, emotionally and psychologically healthy, if we don't take care of ourselves, we can't express love and we start to develop weird behaviors. There must be a limit to what is considered sin or attachment or we can persecute ourselves internally for every human experience.
