A British youth came to me. He was a Muslim of Pakistani or Indian origin. He was a second or third generation Brit. He said, "My faith waned because I studied philosophy, etc. and I had no prior Islamic education. So I began to have great doubts about Islam, even in the existence of the Creator, to the extent that I decided to leave Islam." Allah's refuge is sought! He said, "I decided to renounce Islam. One night I made up my mind that in the morning I would announce my apostasy. I resolved this! I got in bed. From childhood, my mother had accustomed me to take up my prayer beads and send prayers on the Prophet 100 times before sleeping. So I found myself holding the prayer beads! I suddenly realized I was holding the prayer beads and sending prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, and then I remembered that I had decided to apostatize! I denied the existence of God, so how could I be sending prayers on the Prophet?! I found my heart wrestling my intellect." Apostasy is not rational. Apostasy defies logic. However, at that point, he thought his intellect had made a logical conclusion; that apostasy was a rational decision. "So my heart began to wrestle my intellect. I began to think. I said, 'If there really is no God, then that would be accusing the Prophet of lying, and that would be utterly beyond him ﷺ!' My heart could not accept Muhammad as a liar. I said, 'No, no, no! My logic must be flawed. Our Master Muhammad cannot be a liar. I love him.'" Because he had been given love of the Messenger of Allah to drink since his childhood. He said, "I delayed the decision to renounce Islam. In the morning, I began my research anew. I heard about a science called kalam (theology) and a science called mantiq (logic). I began to study them and compare them with philosophy. The necessity of the existence of God became deeply rooted in my intellect; that Allah is the Necessarily Existent." But what grounded him in a moment of chaos? His convictions did not ground him. It wasn't what his intellect had confirmed. What grounded him was the [love] his heart had absorbed. The light infused in his heart is what opened the door for his intellect to perceive clearly, and thus the clouds of confusion disappeared.
