John Funny you mention that, I was fumbling all over in my kayak last time I went out fishing, so I came back to Matt’s videos to review his technique. Looks like he leaves enough line out to guide the fish into the net, when fish is in net, put net under knee, set rod down on lap, remove hooks (the pliers come out of nowhere), toss lure into river, lift up fish, show to camera, measure if over 19”, release fish, rinse, repeat. Still don’t know where the paddle is during all this.

I actually use the saltwater version of the spook, the redhead color has a lot more detail than the freshwater one. Other than that the only difference is the hooks which I swap out anyway. The hooks that come on it would work, but if I ever broke off and left that lure stuck in a fishes mouth the saltwater hooks won’t dissolve while freshwater hooks will rust out in about a week.

You’re sense of where to Cast and how to work a lure is incredible. I don’t know how many times I’ve been watching a video and said “perfect cast, fish on “ and two seconds later you’re reeling in a 18 inch Smallee. Thanks for not being one of those weirdKZread fisherman that says “hey guys “every 2 minutes. Haha
Wow man, great video! Those smallmouth are some monsers! Love me some river fishing!!
Every time this guy casts.. “BIG OLE TANK!!”
I bought one of those Spooks after I saw another video you did, The Largemouth love it too, keep up the great videos.
Just started watching your videos recently. You do well, and I admire your style. Thanks for sharing -- you catch some beautiful fish in some beautiful areas. BTW, I attended St. Marty's College (now University) in Winona in the late '70s and early '80s, graduating in spring 1982. It is a beautiful state. Did a lot of shore fishing on the Mississippi, mainly for northern pike.
Thanks for the awesome content this morning Matt! Nothing better than kayak river smallies and my coffee to start the day.
Rainy days are often the best for fishing😎🎣👍🏼 Nice catch my friend✌🏻️
😁👍 Awesome smallies! nice big and healthy! Those spook lures are awesome and a lot of fun to use!
Another great video, love the smallies!
yeah technically not fall... YA HEAR THAT! IT IS STILL SUMMER!!!! Sorry carry on.. Geez everyone is a jumper today.. that is so exciting .. Damn son.. I do not get to go fishing much any more (old and rather crippled up) But your videos are just perfect to me.. It is like sitting in the yak with you.. These video rather cheer me up on those hard days.. thanks ever so much for ALL of your hard work and dedication... I really appreciate it... carry on and be safe Matt....
Matt, I was out way up north in MN as well battling the rain and had some luck on largies! Great vid as always. They are putting on the feed bag up here for sure!
Love watching your footage. Some of the best topwater blow ups. Nice stuff for sure.
As always, an amazing post. The best kayak fishing vids on KZread. I'm looking forward to all the fall posts. They are always epic.
Amazing video, I love the usage of sounds. We don’t get many small mouth in the ozarks but we get some monster largies! Would love to see you large mouth fish!
You never disappoint, those top water strikes are awesome to watch, there’s something special about the smallies, such beautiful fish. I gotta give a Spook a try. It’s mesmerizing watching you cast a spinning setup with such accuracy, great vid!
Great catches great content. Love the channel. I from Minnesota have to let me in on your fishing spots lol.
You are truly The Smallmouth King , no matter what you cast , no matter where you go , you always catch 'em , Thank you for your hard work to make these clips for us , I really enjoy watching your channel, just subbed and liked . keep 'em coming please Sir.
Fishing ASMR lol. Such an underrated channel. Keep it up!!!
Man you got some nice ones as usual.👍😁. I got that same spook lure. I'll have to try it later today- they sound like a baby rattle.
Morning coffee and watching you smallmouth fishing, doesn’t get any better.
Man great video as always!! I wish we had smallmouth fishing like that in arkansas. Or at least I haven't found it yet🤦♂️
i'm from north west Ohio and have fished lake of the woods may times after seeing your river fishing may rethink MN fishing trips.
I like yours fantastic spots and videos. Ciao American Brothers from your italian fan Massimiliano .
That was fun to watch! Awesome !
“The dirty dangle”. Awesome! Trademark that, put it on a shirt with a smallmouth image = sold.
Just as calm as can be. Most people would be screaming. Myself included. But I don’t catch fish like you do. I love your videos
Love your vids!!such a precise caster
I love the videos, I never miss one but can you catch some northerns next time? I love how your vids are always so genuine and real unlike a lot of the others out there
Amazing fishery! Congrats on the Spooktacular day.
GOOOOD MOOORNING MINNESOTA!!! Love you videos

Honestly the main reason I started throwing that color several years ago is because it shows up well on camera! I remember my grandpa had some red and white topwater lures when I was a kid so there’s some nostalgia from that too.
Beautiful river with some nice fish!
Great fishing. Thanks for braving the rain.
The worst weather always seems to produce fantastic fish. Great action and until next time it's "fish on".
You've inspired me to be a yak man starting next season. Gonna get into the less pressured areas.

You won't regret it.
right now i think your one of my top3 fishing channels
If I could catch that many fish in one trip I’d have dinner plans too!!
Matt have you ever had the chance to fish the Colorado River out west? It’s a great fishery with lots of solid small and Lg mouth, stripers, Catfish...I began to fish there last spring at the onset of the pandemic. Your videos have helped me so much and given me the necessary tools, mindset and technique to catch bass frequently. Thanks for all you do for us new anglers. Peace.
Nice fish! Love your videos
Putting your fingers near all those trebles over and over had me nervous 😁 your a brave man , great vid👍🏻
That was a great video bro top water is freakin cool.
Love them videos keep them coming 👍👍👍👍👍
Good video thank you sir for sharing cheers🍻🍻🍻🎣🎣
Pure clean fishing, no bs clickbates. Awesome channel
These videos are just so awesome. That's it.
That "dirty dangle" for the win ahahah
Wow! fishing in the rain, trooper!
I fall asleep to these videos. Wish my fishing area was as good.
Beautiful smallies man.
Man never gets old watching you crush these big smallies! great video! I have been river fishing the past month and crushing some nice smallies in my area as well! they don't get quite as big as they do in your area but so much fun to catch! have lots of video's coming up with smallie fishing in virginia!

I used to catch some real nice smallies in the James River near Lynchburg but that was many many years ago. Had to be careful where we fished as they would open the gates on the nearby dam to release water that could easily sweep you away. Happened to me once and was able to regain my footing after about a half mile.

@@cliffordelliott4441 I used fish the James river near the scottsville VA area a few times a year and do pretty good there. Stopped going after just being over run with floaters and tuber's all the time with no respect for you fishing it has become a mad house there in the summer these days.

Joseph Borawa - Joe, you might consider subscribing to Matt’s channel and watch some of the other videos that he’s posted (and there are many) because, in several of them, he has told the viewers in detail what gear he uses for spin casting and bait casting set ups as well as his favorite lures including the infamous whopper plopper!! Good luck and happy fishing!

I actually went over the rod/reel/lure on the water but realized there was a big rain drop right in the middle of my lens when I reviewed the footage at home so I decided to leave that out of the video this time. I was using my short St Croix rod though, a 5’10” M XF with 12lb Trilene Sensation mono. I really like that short rod for river fishing, it’s a great multi purpose rod for tight spaces and short accurate casts.

@@ndyakangler Another great video. Can you tell us what spinning reel you have mated to your St. Croix rod? Thanks.
Another great trip!
Eeeesh😳. Fingers and treble hooks and thrashing smaller....yikes...better than ANY day at work 🐬🐟💥

I had a 40+ musky slam my WP75 yesterday. Unfortunately it wasn’t hooked in a good spot for bass tackle and bit my lure off. Same thing happened to my friend though so I might have to go back with some musky gear.
I like your vids in live west of Dickinson somewhere and I still can’t manage to catch anything anytime anywhere only in Wisconsin with 55 inch musky
Nice landings bro. You know I gotta tell ya, I ordered a spook and wasn’t paying attention when I saw it and ordered it. When I got it I was so excited and when i opened it, it was a spook but for a ocean or fresh water 😂
@ndyakangler

Do you ever catch smaller fish? Unreal. Love the content.
I love rainy day fishing
The best part of fishing is feeling of setting the hook
Awesome spook action. Would love to see you use some buzzbaits on some smallies
The first smallmouth what a catch tank for sure
I was just floating back to my truck as you were floating down on Sunday. Hopefully you caught more than the one I did!

It was pretty slow out there. Only caught one myself too, better than getting skunked I guess! I floated maybe a mile downstream and paddled back up to where I was parked. The fishing is usually a lot better on that stretch but this is the time of year when they start shifting more toward the next dam downstream where the current is slower.

Dang, well hopefully we both get on them soon. I'm sure you wont have a problem with that but good luck anyway, we are huge fans of your videos by the way!

Awesome as usual
Dude the smallmouth you get into are incredible! Beautiful fish where your at, nice thumbs up bro 👍👍 Edit: BTW are those OD shoes waterproof or made for water Merril's?
Never gets old does it?
Gotta love them Zara Spooks.
so sick dude!!
Absolutely love watching your videos. I've been trying to target more smallies lately, but seem to break off a fair amount. Any chance you can share what line you use for your different techniques? Thanks in advance and thank you so much for for continuing to keep me entertained and motivated to get out there and catch fish!

I use Trilene Sensation for just about everything. 10-12 for most lures and 14-17 when I’m fishing topwater in faster current. With the short rods I use I need a little stretch in the line to prevent break offs so I stay away from braid and fluoro.
@bschusterbauer99

@@ndyakangler thank you! i've been trying just about everything with mixed results but i'll definitely give that trilene a shot. nothing worse than watching a pig swim away with my hook in its mouth.
Love the show, never miss one, question where did you get your cutters and hook remover it is awesome. Will it cut braid, braid can be tough. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the quality content.

Thanks! It’s a William Joseph Hemocuts and it cuts through anything I’ve tried it on. They quit making them a couple years ago so they’re pretty much impossible to find. Loon Rogue makes one similar though.
