Stargazer is one of my favorite "punchline" song. All these people slave and die to build a tower for this wizard that they worship so he can ascend into heaven and become a god. Then when the time comes, he climbs to the top and steps off.... and splat. Beware of false prophets. Check out Kill the King by Rainbow.

Stargazer's a fantastic song! To me, the lyrics seemed like it was about a slave to an evil wizard, being forced to build a tower to allow the wizard to reach the stars (hence, stargazer). It seems, though, that it doesn't work and the wizard just falls to the ground and basically becomes a stain in the dirt lmao. But the bright side is it means the slaves are free to go as their master is dead, and the song's protagonist seems to announce his desire to go home.

The song is from the perspective of a slave forced to build the tower for the wizard, so the wizard can jump from the top and fly, but then "time standing still, and there's blood on the sand" the wizard doesn't fly, and the slaves are in shock from everything they were working towards being rendered worthless.

Also, from Genius.com : "The start of Rainbow’s epic, a tale of a wizard who believed he could fly. People believe in the wizard and are enslaved in order to build a tower in harsh conditions in the desert so he can fly, during which many die. When the tower is finally erected the wizard climbs the tower only to fall to his death instead of flying, and the slaves feel lost until they see a ‘Rainbow Rising’ (the album title) on the horizon. This then leads onto the final song on the album ‘A Light in the Black’, in which people re-find their purpose after a light in the sky appears. The song is a sweeping narrative about the dangers of hubris - its human costs, its ultimate, doomed folly, and what happens in its wake."

The drummer was Cozy Powell. One of my favorite drummers. He was on MSG (Michael Schenker Group) 1981. Check out the song Attack of the Mad Axeman. Michael Schenker is the younger brother of Scorpions Rhythm guitarist Rudolf Schenker and helped co found that band. Michael Schenker also performed with UFO. Which notes would you take out of the solo for Stargazer. You have to remember that heavy metal is a form of music that takes you on a journey. Thus the long solos. The solos are like a steak, every bite to be savored.

maybe a little late to comment this but the guitar solo becomes more relevant once you realize the meaning of the song and after listening again you realize that the solo is basically the rise and fall of the wizard from the tower

Cozy Powell is one of the most revered drummers in the metal world, pasted away in the 80's. And that line of Dio - Vocals, Blackmore - Guitars, Carey - Keyboards, Bain - Bass, and Powell - drums... This is one of the superbands of those times and of all-times, it's like Led Zeppelin's formation, or Cream's formation... Rainbow was brilliant when Dio was there... And listen to "Gates of Babylon" from "Long Live Rock n Roll" album or "Starstruck" from the "Rising" Album. The albums that Dio made with Rainbow are work of art, no doubt in my mind!!! Peace out budies!!!

Dio usually wrote about the lore of "mystical" things, for example, 'Heaven & Hell' was inspired by tarot cards. 'Stargazer' is a fable that warns people about believing in messiahs and not giving into hopelessness. The story literally tells the tale of tyrant wizard who enslaves a country and makes them build a tower for him. As people hope their misery comes to an end someday, even as they build the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains") just so they can see him fly, which gives them hope. But, the wizard falls off the tower and dies ("no sound as he falls instead of rising. Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand.")

"Stargazer" is long at eight and a half minutes, but to me it has such an amazing groove that it doesn't feel that way. It is undoubtedly the greatest song that Rainbow ever did. Other Rainbow songs that you gotta hear are "Man On The Silver Mountain" from the debut album (this was their 2nd album), "Long Live Rock And Roll" and "Kill The King" (from their 3rd album), "All Night Long" and "Eyes Of The World" (with their second lead singer, the amazing Graham Bonnet), "Spotlight Kid," "I Surrender," "Jealous Lover," "Stone Cold" and "Street Of Dreams" (with their bluesy and soulful third lead singer, American vocalist Joe Lynn Turner). 👍
