That's GREAT early JUDAS PRIEST. The band could NEVER be tied down to any one form of METAL... NOBODY can put JUDAS PRIEST into a tiny box. They are FREE THINKERS!

Another epic JUDAS PRIEST song is "A Touch of Evil" or the tecno experimental "Turbo Lover". From there feel free to get lost in the vastly Epic METAL of JUDAS PRIEST.

The Blues was the base for all popular rock n'roll. The Beatles and the Stones experimented and pushed the boundaries and inspired the pioneers of Metal like Sabbath, Priest, Deep Purple, Rush. Victim of Changes I think was Priest distinguishing themselves from their peers in the mid-70s and they experimented with a ore mainstream sound in the 80s, probably got pressure from record companies for another hit like You got Another Thing Coming, but they were always hard. I think they heard Pantera Cowboys from Hell years ago and realized they were getting a little too soft, and were then inspired to create Painkiller.

Painkiller was recorded before Cowboys from Hell was released. They were more inspired by thrash metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth etc. Maybe even from Testament since Halford really likes their music.

They didn't really adapt till the the late 80s. In the 70s and early 80s, they were the trendsetters. The number of people ripping off Hell Bent for Leather and Screaming for Vengeance by the mid 80s was ridiculous.

Victim of Changes is from 1976 and Painkiller was from 1990. Huge difference from two different decades. This was Priest redefining the metal sound Sabbath and Purple started. This song is awesome to play on guitar. Halford 6 octive range. Often imitated never duplicated. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh hhhaaaaa!!!!

There are a million rooms in the house of heavy metal. Much of the time people stay with the music of their formative years, and newer stuff just becomes foreign to the ear. The older you get, the more challenging getting interested in new music becomes. Fortunately, heavy metal is diverse enough that if you can't get into the new stuff, you can go back and explore the older stuff. Exploration of music is how one can achieve an appreciation for newer music, and studying music can further that as well. Now, as for your vision of Rob Halford and the rock star "womanizing" thing...

Judas Priest really had three major faces throughout their career - metal pioneers ("Victim Of Changes"), metal superstars ("You've Got Another Thing Coming") and metal monsters ("Painkiller") and it's a testimony to their excellence that they can transition between them with ease, unlike any other band I know. They may be one of the most versatile artists in history of popular music. Well, you now have only one major side of them left to discover - and then only everything in between. ;)

I'll go a step further and mention that with the exception of Defenders of the Faith retaining quite a bit of similarity to Screaming for Vengeance, in their 50-year career no other two consecutive albums ever sounded anything alike. Critics say Firepower is a "rehash" of sorts but it really wasn't (check out Razorfist's review of Firepower for an excellent explanation of why not)!

Excellent choice. The thing about a band like Judas Priest is that their career has at least 3 distinct eras in it, and when I try to think about suggesting a song for Ryan and George that defines the middle era in the 80's "The Hellion/Electric Eye" is what I keep thinking of.

Just abit of insight from a guitar player on a few comments you guys made - 'that sound' you said you guys loved from various artists of this era (late 60s-early 70s) is a particular amplifier called the Marshall 'Plexi' turned up to 10 thru a 4x12 cab(or 2) with Celestion Greenback speakers... This would be sooo loud it could literally make you nauseous, but it would sound soooo badass!!! LOL Virtually no one can play with that kind of volume these days. Also, that 'wobbling' sound in the middle guitar solo you tried to describe is made by a mechanical bar equipped on some guitars that when depressed slackens the strings, making the pitch go down, or when pulled, makes the strings tighter, which makes the pitch go up. It's called a tremolo or 'whammy' bar. You can use it to add subtle nuances or go crazy and pull till the strings snap! Jimi Hendrix was one of the first to go crazy with it... The bluesy sound you noticed(good ear!) is basically inherent for this time frame in guitar as heavy metal evolved from rock & roll, which came from the blues. As different people experienced different cultures around the world(thru both war-time and increasingly affordable peace-time travel) different elements were introduced to music, and so you have the Rolling Stones playing an Indian sitar in "Paint It Black" or Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple/Rainbow incorporating European classical & gypsy scales into rock guitar and famously Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin featuring Celtic influences, all of which combined with that blues base. It's actually quite fascinating!

First JP I ever heard, in high school was this album, "Sad Wings of Destiny" Priest went through changes with every album, this was a particularly poetic period. Great trippin tunes of the times and totally underground. The only way you knew about them was if someone turned you on to them until "British Steel" when "Breaking the Law" got them noticed by rock stations and airtime. Remember now, there was no internet LOL! that's an important detail, also cable TV was being born but only in the biggest cities. Majority of people had 3-4 channels, maybe pick up smaller ones close to cities. This added to the mystery of music and bands especially the early days of what would be called heavy metal.

Glad you did this one. Victim and The Ripper are still their best 2 songs in my opinion. Early metal has a very bluesy sound which given metal has spawned from the blues isn't surprising. This whole album and the next has that cool sound. Priests sound, like Slayers, was also aided by the fact that both guitarists played lead.

Take into account when comparing this song to Painkiller that this is a 70s song and Painkiller is from 1990, the same year Pantera released Cowboys from Hell, for example. Such a great classic. Glad you guys like it. Painkiller came much later (1990), after bands like Metalica, Slayer ects. So Priest were reacting to the 80's speed metal scene on Painkiller, and changed their sound quite a bit on that album. But those speed/thrash bands were HEAVILY influenced by old Priest songs like this.

it doesn't matter what type of music you like. be it priest, floyd, rush, or a lot of the other "70's" bands you guys are discovering. the recording process, the imagination of the band and producer, plus the level or unsophisticated level of the technology back then(depending on your pov) was the reason why those 70's albums sounded so freakin good! most of the members of your favorite band took a hands on approach to recording and put their hearts into it. cheers from canada!
