Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after a trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig. This performance is from "Live in Munich 1977", available now.

I saw every concert from Bonnet 1979 - 1984 Joe Turner was my favorite. Singing his love songs to my girl was so easy & user friendly to remember. And then I hated seeing him going back to purple & Gillan really EFFED it up completely for me. Richie should of never of disbanded Rainbow, JLT was the perfect singer for the 80's not' Gillan.! I was so sad.

I saw them play on this tour - Glasgow Apollo, aged 15. Dio was a fantastic singer, one of the best. Blackmore was less impressive tbh, but maybe he had an off night. Saw Gary Moore play with Thin Lizzie a few years later at the same venue - still the best I've ever seen.

Dio and Blackmore were such a great match. One thing you could say about both of them is that when they went up on stage to perform live, they didn't leave a damn thing behind in the studio. You got both of them at their peak, at there best. People with that talent are born to perform live. They don't need the support of editing and engineering to do their thing and make it sound good. If you ran into them both at a party, and had them sit down, and handed Blackmore a cheap acoustic guitar, what you'd still get would be absolute genius.

Joab Basualdo Gago Captain Beyond (1971) and Armageddon (1975) shared the same incredible drummer, Bobby Caldwell. They were both "supergroups" in their own right, but were not really popular enough to be "legends of heavy metal". But they ARE two of the 70's best bands!! Highly recommended
People, this group isnt underrated. Underrated is someone with this much talent that never gets a chance. These guys made their mark.
I saw this best version of Rainbow in 78 in Chicago. Incomparable performances from all. Blackmore is the King of Strings and DIO is the Pavoratti of metal singers. Actually of all singers.
I'm 61, it's 2023, & I've been metal before metal upchucked beautifully out of the roots of Rock n Roll , my 1st Live Concert , I was 14 & I saw Aerosmith " ROCKS" & Nazareth " HAIR OF THE DOG " TOUR , I Believe it was 1975, & I've seen Rickie Blackmore Solo & with RAINBOW, I've seen Ronnie James DIO with DIO , Rainbow & Solo. And I've seen just about everyone there is to see in Rock , Heavy Metal , Thrash, Speed & Black Metal , Death Metal , Underground Metal , And Countless Bands of all other types of Music . Pop, Jazz , Soul , Rhythm & Blues , Ect.. You name it, I've seen it. I've saved every ticket stub to every Concert / Show I've ever seen & when the Concerts/ Shows stopped having tickets bcuz you paid at the door & ALOT of them were underground music concerts which were at local clubs instead of big concert hall , well I just cut out the adverts from the mags or grabbed a flyer of the show on the way out the door & added them to the ticket stub Collection in place of the ticket stub. My collection is vast , And yes, I'm quite deaf , and I have to say " WHAT DID YOU SAY " quite a lot these days . But no hearing aid just yet, Lol. Cheers ! Rock n Roll & Metal Will Never Die ! Amen!?

@@aleks.r1473 Do not underestimate the architects in 50's and sixties. Great music there.
NO matter how much praise is lavished upon Ritchie Blackmore, it'll NEVER be enough. His technique, his tone, his expressive playing is amazing. I saw Rainbow at the end of the Long Live Rock And Roll tour. Blackmore, Dio and Powell were STILL together. I THINK Toney Carey handled keyboards for the concert. The extra treat was seeing Roger Glover on bass rejoin Ritchie Blackmore on stage which foreshadowed his contributions for the remainder of Rainbow. That Concert was awesome.
Some people get to see an idol maybe 1 or 2 times in concert.....I marvel at the fact that when Ronnie was with ELF, and prior to his mega fame, they used to play our home town here in NE Pa an average of at least once every 2 months at a local club, and that I probably saw him at least 30 times.....not to mention the fact that it was from something like 10 feet away, as we all stood there transfixed.......still blows my mind to this day.....then all of a sudden it stopped cold turkey as ELF broke up, and we found out that he had gone with Rainbow.....then coming to the realization that indeed, he was on his way, and, more over that we had been privileged to see GREATNESS from such an early vantage point.
Ronnie just sounds INCREDIBLE. Awesome performance by all.
Ritchie Blackmore is on fire and Ronnie James Dio's voice is amazing. The rest of the band is perfection while allowing the two gifted front men to do what they do best.
Is everyone just gonna sit there and pretend that the blues jam at the end of this video was nothing short of epic?!

To those complaining that they're playing faster than the record...when you're in a metal or punk band and you're playing a show in front of a crowd, you naturally have shit tons of adrenaline pounding through your veins. He told me that Blackmore left Jimmy Page for dead in the better guitarist category as well as the overall band performance.
