Railways of Great Britain Northampton Ironstone Railway August 2018

We were very disappointed when we visited this railway,it says a Ironstone railway, so why no ironstone wagons or mining items to see.Why have they got electric third rail items on show, everywhere you look is untidy more like a scrap yard...I know most of the work is done by the few and that more volunteers are always needed....It looks to me like they need a plan of attacking the work, tidy up the cafe/play area/toilets,move none Ironstone items off site.Show the history of the local mining activities, improve, tidy up the museum, allow people to see the work being done to the steam loco that is under repair.

Looks like a very interesting site. Just needs a massive tidy up :)

Your not wrong when you say it needs a tidy up.It is like most of the smaller preservation Societies they need more volunteers and money....Regards Chris

If they hadn't given a home to the electric rolling stock, it might have gone for scrap. I'm sure they'd welcome a few encouraging comments.

Hi Andrei......I totally agree the stock could well have gone to scrap, the point i'm making is,is this the right railway for them. They have no facilities to keep them under cover or even renovate them, surely it would be better if they were at a different railway. All heritage railways rely on volunteers and would always welcome many more to help with the work load.I'm a railway enthusiast and have been all my life...I worked on the railway for 45 years on many different sections from station, signal box, shunting and finally working on the P.Way for 30 years on leaving as Section Manager. If an enthusiast sees this railway as a scrap yard just what do the public think,it surely wouldn't encourage a member of the public to go and volunteer....Rocks by Rail is another Iron stone railway museum, this is near to me,it was in the same state early on, until they had a guy that took over and with his guidance turned it around to what is today, not a storage yard for out of place coaching items but a living Ironstone museum, you can see the cranes working for iron ore,wagons/trains being shunted, items from the ironstone quarries..Plus of coarse steam or diesel rides. I wish the N.I.R all the very best, but as I said before they need a plan of attack......Best wishes Chris

A lot of work needed Dave, such a shame as the guys we spoke to are so keen. The same old story no money, not enough helpers...It was ok riding in the cab but with nine people in such a small area I think I would have sooner been in the brake van......Best wishes Chris

Not your best visit by the sounds of it Chris, but your points are valid, volunteers and cash..it's a catch 22 always...Regards.....Bob

From what I had heard it was a good museum but we were very disappointed, the guys were trying there best to make it a fun visit and collect a few much needed pounds into the bank...At least it wasn't a wasted trip as we called in on the M.E.S just down the road.......Best wishes Chris.
