the locomotives where the headlights don't open require you to open the generator. It's a dynamo mounted on the top of the boiler that creates electricity for the headlights. I honestly thought that was a feature only found on locomotives build after 1900, but after doing some research I found out they were actually invented in the mid-late 1800s, i think is was the 1870's

Having used the Heisler now for over a week, I really wanted to comment on your video. The Heisler can use up to 50 to 60% regulator as well as 100% reverse and operate just fine. Anything past that on the regulator and it slips wildly like the Climax did during its segment. It can be a bit tricky to get out the power you need, but it'll rock up with a heavy train like it's nothing. I for one recommend it, even in its currently 'broken' state

I do agree that an optional switcher pilot, or at least a normal cowcatcher on the 2-6-0 would look much better. The game is still in development though and it seems like the group is really trying to improve the product. Though I look forward to maybe seeing user created mods/new maps/equipment, I don't want to see the basic principles and physics change. If you want a 90 car, triple Dash 9 headed coal train going along a 110 mile route, then there are other simulators that already fit the bill. But if you want to build a shortline railway across a beautiful and remote map from scratch (like I do)? Then this is awesome as is.

The difference in the headlight options on the cooke (and also in some others) is that the more expensive headlights have plates that hold the engine number, the standard headlight does not (its helpful for people that give 3 digit numbers to their locomotives) Also the red or green lanterns on the sides come from ships navigational lights. Ships have red lights on their left side (port) and green on their right sides (starboard), they are used at night when the ships is moving so other vessels know which direction they are going; on locos they can be used to signal if the train is moving normally or tender first (put red lights on the left side and green on the right side, left and right, foward beeing the direction the train is moving)

Also, i road in a Climax in real life and there a lot of fun!! The one i road in seamed to go faster than the one in the video, the enginer told me that climaxs have gear boxes that allow you to swap between low gear with high tractive effort or a nother gear that will make the engine go faster for longer runs where the max tractive effort is not needed as much. I wish the game designers could add that to the Climax!

Most trains have a three section wheel arrangement. An example is a 4-4-0, their are four leading wheels, four driving wheels, and zero trailing wheels. Geared locomotives like the Shays, Climaxes and Heisler’s have a different classification based on the number of trucks they have and/or cylinders they cave. Class A has 2 trucks and two cylinders, Class B have 2 trucks and 3 cylinders, Class C have 3 trucks and 3 cylinders, and Class D have 4 trucks and three cylinders and their are only class D shays. If only they added shays into Railroads Online. Climaxes and Heisler’s are similar in that they have their gear shaft the under side of them however, Climaxes have their cylinder power transferred through a gear box while the Heisler’s power is directed strait to the gear shaft because of the Heisler’s cylinders being in a V shape. Shays have the most unique arrangement. They have their Cylinders directly on their right side only and their Gear shaft is also on the right side so to counteract the weight of the cylinders, the Boiler of the Shay is slightly to the left of the locomotive. So while the Climax and Heisler locomotives have perfectly centered boilers and two cylinders on both sides, the Shays have their boiler to their left and their cylinders to the right. Also, Shays are the slowest of the Geared locomotives while Heisler’s are the fastest and Climaxes are the cheapest and have the shortest service life.

if the game mechanics is same as train simulator and such , you should be able to increase the speed of the locos with the reverser , as this is basically allows the loco to use full steam pressure if it is set at 100% forward or reverse , so having the reverser at 50% cut off would allow the loco to speed up and use less steam , like full size loco would , maybe give that ago in the game and see if your fuel, water and steam use will change ?? BTW i drive and own miniature steam locomotive soo it should work same as in game with how the miniature one works.

About the connecting rods on the Heisler and not on the Climax: Both are geared locos, driven by a drive shaft from the pistons. The on the Climax, both axels on each truck are geared and driven, thus no side rods were necessary. On the Heisler, the drive shaft only connected to the inner axel. Thus the side-rods are necessary to drive the outer axel on the truck. The name for the "reverser" is interesting. Steam locomotives don't actually have a "reverser". It should be more properly called the 'cutoff', as it controlled at which point during the stroke steam was cut off from entering the piston. The regulator controlled how much steam got let in per cutoff stroke. Some steam engines controlled direction with the cutoff, others with more complex valve gear had a dedicated reverser mechanism to move backward (it changed the position of certain parts of the valve gear, so the initial stroke rotated the wheels in the other direction).

Ok a couple of questions. I love these games I used to have Railroad Tycoon and you could choose Sandbox mode. Now you would have unlimited access to building getting rolling stock etc. you did not make money but it was still fun. I like this game is there a way to add funds into your company’s account just curious. Also I am having a hard time making curves trying to make the right height roadbed and I am struggling any helpful hints would be great

That extra attachment on the front pilot is a snow plow attachment. Just not sure if it is a factory or "made on site" model. Snow plows for engines usually had a taller front surface to prevent snow build-up from coming over the top of the plow.

Isn't the reverser like the transmission on a car on a steam loco? 100% either direction would be 1st gear, then the closer you get to 0 should decrease power and increase speed.

Dont waste your money on the upgraded Porter, unless you really, really want it. It has extra wood but the *_same_* amount of water and tractive effort. You will run out of that water far sooner then wood, so there is no real reason to have so much wood with you in the first place. With the tractive efforts due for a change, the engine may become more useful but not as of now. (11-26-21)
