Rail Shooters - Game Sack

Ойындар

Episode 39 - How about some rail shooters (or shoot-em-ups)? While obviously we can't cover ALL rail shooters in a single episode, we look at a few notable and worthy ones. Ahh, so many rails, so little time.

    So you walked home with a Saturn, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, and Panzer Dragoon. Longevity aside, that was probably a pretty amazing haul.

    I remember playing a rail shooter in the PS1 of my friend called "Elemental Gearbolt" that game was very hard, but very fun at the same time (especially with 2 players) I don't know if the game is well known, the one thing I remember a lot is the intro cutscene with anime style video. It was really awesome!

    Funny, i remembered exactly that rail shooter while watching this episode. We were playing in it alot, using mouse+light gun, but i don't remember any cutscene. Maybe we just pushed the button and skipped it all.

    Orta is my favorite rail shooter. I also like really like the Afterburner series. The arcade version of AB2 with the seat that would move as you play was the coolest thing ever when I was young. I'm a bit surprised that Space Harrier and Child of Eden didn't get mentioned. Also, the classic Yar's Revenge was recently remade into a rail shooter.

    Never understood the what's all the fuss about Starfox. This game always seemed to me like a Snes attempt of a legless frog to outswim a barracuda. Now, Silpheed, on the other hand, now that was a true audiovisual tour-de-force in space. Absolutely spectacular. And it still haven't lost any of its power and appeal!

    Star Fox graphics being "nothing the 32x couldn't wipe the floor with"... Mmm.. Yes... Being as the 32x was a full blown 32-bit add-on module for the Genesis instead of a single 16-bit co-processor added to a cartridge, released almost TWO YEARS later at a time when technology was evolving rapidly and seeing marked improvements in graphics technology literally every year.. What a GENIUS comparison you made there, absolutely brilliant...... Compare it to it's actual contemporaries, or don't bother.. That's like comparing a Sega CD to a Playstation..

    Some demo guys got a Star Fox level running on a Genesis now. It runs at about the same frame rate on a plain jaine Genesis without any extra chips. Sega could've done games like that, but probably rightly figured that putting their name on a 3D game that runs at under 10 fps was a bad idea. Of course, their SVP game, Virtua Racing, pushes about 9 times as many polygons and runs twice as fast.

    It's kinda funny (and rather desperate of Joe) to compare the polygons of the SNES to the 32X considering one is 16-bit and the other is 32-bit (supposedly).

    +John DiLoreto On a technical aspect, perhaps. On a critical and commercial level it failed miserably. Seeing as the 32x lasted a meager amount of time and the SNES SFX games were critically praised I think 'trump' is an inaccurate word to use. The games on the 32x were forgettable, much like the console itself.

    It's known as "following a predetermined path within the game, and not being allowed to leave that path at all." Hence the term, "rail" shooter. It's like a train, you cannot leave the train tracks. Oh, and Area 51 is a "rail" shooter as well, since you shoot the bad guys, move to the next area, shoot more bad guys, move on, etc.

    Thanks. We only mention it when it is worth nothing. Most games age like you'd expect them to... i.e they look like you'd expect a game from that particular generation to look (at least in my case). Some games age well and still look amazing today despite their age. Others, like most games from the 32-bit era, don't look so hot now. That might go without saying like saying the Atari 2600 hasn't aged well goes without saying, I suppose.

    @SoukerWorldGaming That makes sense. I guess it just doesn't seem like something Nintendo would come up with. The title of the game even has two things that makes Nintendo afraid. It's just not warm and happy enough so I guess that's why we didn't think of that. :)

    The original Sin & Punishment was co-developed (and published) by Nintendo, so they likely own some of the rights to the IP. The sequel was also published by Nintendo, so it's no wonder that it's Wii exclusive.

  • @MalamiteLtd
    @MalamiteLtd11 жыл бұрын

    Sin & Punishment Star Successor only released for the Wii because the original Sin & Punishment was co-developed between Nintendo and Treasure, making the series a Nintendo property. It's also the reason why the first game's protagonist was easily added to Smash Bros. Brawl, though just as an Assist Trophy.

  • @tetrisdave

    The Sin and Punishment series is easily among the best games for the N64 and Wii. Their only "fault" is how they make every other rail shooter hard to enjoy. I used to love Panzer Dragoon but now, after playing S&P, it just feels clunky :T

  • @GameSack
    @GameSack11 жыл бұрын

    The reason Sin & Punishment: Start Successor was only released on the Wii is because Nintendo owns the rights to the series. Saki (the main character in the first game) even appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an assist trophy. It's basically the same reason why Zelda: Skyward Sword isn't on PS3 with Move.

  • @sirsinnes

    Silpheed on Sega CD isn't really streaming raw graphics most of the time. What it's streaming is essentially pre-processed vectors for each frame. The Sega CD isn't doing any 3D processing, but it is doing 3D rendering.

    I was under the impression rail shooters are games like Starblade, Leathal Enforcers, Area 51, Mad Dog Mcree and so on. Basically where you have a fixed perspective/camera where the player cannot control the direction or movement, only the aim of the character. The backgrounds play in an 'FMV style' while the player shoots enemies that appear, and the player is most often not visible (POV). I think of games like starfox and panzer dragoon as 3D shooters, but that could just be my weirdness lol
