Overhead Run 'n Guns - Game Sack
Ойындар
Episode 40 - When Game Sack was exactly half as old as it is now, we covered side-scrolling run and gun games. So naturally now it's time to cover the overhead variety. Games must meet all 3 criteria: 1: Overhead (ish), 2: running around on foot (either real feet or robo-feet) and 3: shooting things.

Thanks for watching!
It's almost certainly been said already but Ikari II was in the arcade, called Victory Road

I love the "cartridge insert clips" you put in your videos.
It is. It's Sega's own arrangement from Rambo First Blood Part 2 on the Master System, also known as Secret Commando or Ashura.
One of my favorite genres. Thanks for this video.
I wish they connected that the two men in Ikari Warriors are named Ralf and Clark and later contend in the King of Fighters tournaments regularly...

I think they show up in a few Metal Slug games too.

@@AlucardsQuest They're in Metal Slug 6 and 7.
Uhhh victory road WAS in the arcade sans the ikari warriors moniker!!!

I was thinking the same.
Wow, I always thought the Gamesack guys dwelled a little too much on the comments that said thing like "what about X game, you forgot Y game." But going back to these old episodes I can see what they were contending with! People were ... a little insufferable in the early years of Gamesack 😅
This video needs a second part to cover more of these top-down shooters. I love the constant bits of humor you guys would have in your episodes and really make me miss Dave even more. It's funny to hear you guys even poke fun at your voice acting in this episode which was one of the charms of your videos. The ending sketches are always something to look forward to. Here's to Dave making a comeback to the channel or at least doing surprise visits from time to time.
When Dave says "Let's take command of that". ICONIC!
Thanks for the Last Alert recommendation. I just picked it up after watching this and I’m not disappointed. I love the cheesy voice acting. It gives it its charm.
Loaded on the PS is awesome!
That ending compilation with that music was awesome

Yes what was that music name
Great episode, I'd enjoy another one on this topic!
you guys have come a long way from your first episode and you keep getting better and better nice vids
Medal of Honour: Infriltrator on GBA was fantastic, really loved how they took the core gameplay of the series and managed to put it into a overhead shooter.
Ikari Warriors, Commando, Gun.Smoke, Guerilla War, Total Carnage, Smash T.V. and Shock Troopers were favorite top down shooters of mine.

Do you think Ikari Warriors was the best "worst" top down of all time?
Mercs on Mega Drive is a *very good* port that also comes with an exclusive "Original Mode" with new stages, different gameplay mechanics and even a whole new soundtrack yet you didn't even mention it?! Did you even play it?
One game I can think of that I was expecting, was Gain Ground for the Genesis and Master System. I guess its probably too unusual and slow moving, to be considered a true Overhead Run 'n Gun.
The best games of the video are in the end: Elemental Master (even if in fact it's a pedestrian shoot 'em up...); Twinkle Tale; Smash T.V....

Last Alert! People will hate you, Steve, if you're too sting-ee! Haha great episode as always. love the delivery.
Nice episode guys! GameSack is the best show on youtube! My favorite Run N Gun game back in the day was Guerilla War for the NES,I've played and beaten that game almost every day and never got bored of it.The game was hard but thank god for the unlimited continues lol.
I love the games you cover in your shows. I never knew about the shock troopers games before. Thanks for making such awesome videos. I love your humor as well.
I grew up loving SNK and anything Neo Geo, so I have no idea how Shock Troopers passed me by. I had never heard of it and after seeing it here I searched my PS4 and Switch and downloaded it for both! Lol. It's been great going through these eps. I'm a new fan of Game Sack, and it's officially my go to when I get off of work and wanna wind down.
S.A.R. Search And Rescue for the Arcade definitely belongs on this list. That was one of my favorites as a youngling.
However, you missed the best version of the Commando theme, the Rob Hubbard version. Rob Hubbard - Commando [C64]
Loaded for PS1 is a great one too.
Jackal is probably my favorite of this genre but Gun DOT Smoke is really good too!
IKARI Warriors II was called Victory Road in the arcade. It had an arcade port. It wasn't very good -- but you guys missed out on Heavy Barrel. That game was HELLA fun.
@Stick162 Its an arranged version of Rambo: First Blood Part II on the Sega Master System. It's called We Fight For Friends. This was from an album called SEGAROCKS if I recall correctly.
Last Alert is one of my favorite Turbo CD games loved every minute of the complete cheesiness of it. Looking back it almost feels like a parody of the genre though at the time I think I was just enamored with games that had spoken dialog in them.
Looking at Gun Dot Smoke (I wish Joe would show as much appreciation for the dot as dave) I was stunned by the graphics. Seeing the Sega Saturn pushing twice as much pixel as the Sega Master System is awesome.
YES. Never understood the love and fame awarded to Ikari Warriors...it's not that great. Guerilla War is, along with Gunsmoke, the best overhead run n' gun game. Awesome, awesome game, man!
Guerrilla War by SNK was great.
Apocalypse for ps1 is alsow A dope game of the genre
@TheGreenMonkeyKing It was on those Capcom Generations discs released in Japan, number 4. It has Commando, Mercs and Gun.Smoke. The same thing was released for the Playstation and they may have even been released in the US for that system, not entirely sure. Anyway the game can be played horizontally or vertically (requiring you to tip your TV).
another incredible show !!! Thank you guys for everything you do ! .. Just wish you would release 2x episodes per week ;)
I was happy to see Guerilla War mentioned. Also, the arcade version of Ghostbusters was a top down shooter that ate several of my quarters.
Love all your videos guys, great work!! :)
I freaking love Total Carnage. Me and my nephew recently went through and beat the game. It was mindblowingly hard, yet extremely fun.
Nice episode. One overhead run and gun I really liked that not a lot of people know about is Medal of Honor Infiltrator for the GBA.
It is indeed. Watch our next episode this Sunday for a little bit of Predator 2 love.
Man so many overhead run 'n gunners! So many I need! Can I have your uber expensive Twinkle Tale, Joe?
One reason to love the mondays... There's always a episode of Game Sack
There was a sequel to Ikari Warriors in the arcade called Victory Road. Ikari Warriors 2 on the nes is based off it.

Well for one thing they have gotten much more informative and this video was tree years ago when they were first developing their style and look.
this is my first time seeing this show and i enjoyed it keep up the good work
A few of the games in your extra section are actually shoot 'em ups. Key feature of a run 'n' gun: the screen moves with your character rather than the other way round.
OUTZONE!!!!!! Nostalgia engine burning hot! Bin lookin for this for ages i dunno the title... I Just remember the yoyo like weapon.. Thankyouuuuu so much gamesack..
What about Jackal? Technically a Drive'n'Gun, but awesome nonetheless.

Two player a must!!!!
@OldsXCool Ha ha yeah, a lot of people have mentioned Jackal and even Dave wondered about it as we made the video. But we decided that there wasn't enough "running" around. If part of the game does have you on foot, then I haven't seen it. We did almost forget Pocky & Rocky.
Great episode. You guys put alot of work in this. And love the awesome music selection you put in. I love the rocking Rambo2 sega mastersystem remix especially. Add to the fact that you guys don't use the F word every second like all the AVGN clones, puts you as my favorite retro videogame review channel.
finally... some shock troopers love... that was definitely the only neo geo game that had me going back to the same pizza shop that had it to spend my allowance ($5 a week) to beat the damn thing. quite an amazing game for sure...
Where the hell is Gain Ground (Master System & Genesis)? One of my favorite games growing up.
@kh7955

Not a run n gun. It's a walk n gun
"Gun Dot Smoke" - Silly Grin and Point. LMFAO.
Awesome episode guys, and I know you said you can't show everything, but I'm shocked you guys did not show the classic Jackal on the NES, cause even though it has a Jeep, and not a guy on foot, it plays just like a run n' gun game, and made me feel like a total badass as a kid when i finally beat it.
Gain Ground is the only overhead Run 'n Gun game that comes to mind that got missed here... it doesn't scroll, but I think it tends to involve the running part much more than any other game in the genre.
Watching the video late, I noticed the Victory Road arcade comments have already been made. Oddly enough, I was actually able to see this game in arcades back in the day. I just remember having to turn around to see the game that was yelling 'Warriors, show some guts! You can't escape me! Come get me if you can! AHAHAHAHA!'
Oh god you mentioned Twinkle Tale, I love you guys!
@SPac316 That one is an overhead beat 'em up. Kind of interesting they took that direction with the game.
One of the best Genres ever. You could technically add Jackal, Gremlins 2, and half of Blaster Master. 2 1/2 of the very best games on the NES!
I loved Gun.Smoke on nes. It took a bit but i did beat it. Loved the music during the fat man joe stage!
At least in Mercs the food is on plates (not the bare ground) and spinach is in cans conveniently opened for you.
My mom had my older brother secretly go and buy a Sega Genesis for my Christmas present. I knew I was getting it...but had to act like it was going to be a surprise. A couple of weeks before Christmas, I was walking past my brother's closed bedroom door...and heard the explosions and gunfire from Rambo III...HE WAS PLAYING MY GENESIS!!! Years later he admitted it...apparently he had to "make sure it worked."....uh, yeah....
They're what we have. Thanks for watching!
I love Crackdown and TheNinja, I played them over and over, but didn't passed the second level most, because we played it in after school center, and not at home.
@108Stars You're right! pre rendered is the word we needed. Neither of us own an Atari. I can't believe there was a 2600 version. Maybe a 7200 but not a 2600
I played a lot of Gun dot Smoke as a kid on nes. Never got super far, but the gameplay had me playing it over and over again. Solid game, and very affordable which is nice. I also grew up with Ikari Warriors II because I grew up in the mid-late 90's on NES due to 'thrifty' parents, so I relied on what my video store had left to rent. I ended up buying it for 5 bucks when they went out of nes/snes renting. I wish I had known of other games, I knew it was bad but faced with getting no game or that one, I went with that one. Weekends of frustration on that stupid fucking second level are all I remember. Would Iron Tank count?
Nice mention of Elemental Master on Genesis. Now I want Twinkle Tale! Crackdown on Genesis looks good to me for some reason; all those windows make it look more strategic or RPG-ish or something. Out Zone for arcade looks SWEET! I want one, but there are none on eBay. Great episode!
i really liked the episode you guys shot as a sitcom would you guys ever consider doing another one like that
@CollisionCat Interesting tidbit about Victory Road. Ikari 3 is a beat em up. All the enemies do ballet in that game.
Nice vid guys, always love your work. But I feel like I've heard the song where all the other games were being presented. I'm trying to find it right now since it's so awesome.
Ikari Warriors 2 and 3 were arcade ports.
@clays121 We did discuss including Jackal but felt it was more like Firepower 2000.
13:46 remembers me a lil bit to kenshiro (Fist of the North Star) ;) by the way guys you two are some kind of guys i searched for years :D all that great (or worse) games shall not be left forgotten
I like the ending segments
I like this. I will have to do a Twitch stream of me playing these sometime!
Commando as well as many other arcade games 1942/1943 are available for PS3/Xbox 360 as an online download. You download a classic arcade app which comes with a free game, the rest can be bought individually or in packs. You can unlock new games from playing games and by purchasing all of them. These bonus game's aren't available for purchase to my knowledge and can only be obtained via completing their requirements.
I've played most of these but Gunsmoke is by far the best.
Glad to see you guys are trying to fit alot more game ideas into your videos than you have in the past. Good work. But you forgot Jackal for the NES! Like I said. Keeping you guys in check.
@TemplarZK Thanks for the compliment! I like Guerilla War. I'm happy SNK put a lot of effort into the NES back in the day.
I actually thought Mercs on the Master System was a small game that wasn't well known. I had a lot of fun with that one as a kid. Big kudos for the inclusion of Ninja (Master System) and Total Carnage but I have to admit that I'm surprised you didn't include a nod towards the father of the genre, Robotron 2084. I guess it only partially qualifies but Cannon Fodder is one of the best - if only for the awesome introduction video and song. Also, you guys forgot Chaos Engine! Great show as always!
I had a very good neo geo aes overhead scrolling shooter, time commando, really good fun.
Did you mention Guardian Legend on NES? That had overhead run n gun elements.
I loved smash tv. the conroll system on nes, snes and arcade were each very distinctive and cool.
It's in there.
I'd love to see room tours in a future episode.
Hello, great videos. I'm just want to say (write). Ikari Warriors II for the SNES is a port from the Arcade. I used to play that game when I traveled to the US... a loooong time ago.
as a massive Commando Fan, im holding back alot of angry bile twords Dave for the things he said about it only because I usually respect the opinions of you guys have.
Glad you mentioned Outzone. One of Toaplan's best. The sequel (FixEight) isn't bad, either.
Pocky And Rocky games are just great I wish you talked about them.
@cuklg Yes. We are Monday's must see TV. Thanks!!
There was actually a Victory Road arcade game from SNK, and although it had nothing to do with Ikari Warriors in any way,it played similarly.Just so you know.
My favourite is Mercs, then Shock Troopers, and lastly Out Zone.
that Ys seven music during the montage sounds like it was heavily inspired by zeppelin tunes, particularly "achilles last stand" and "the song remains the same".
Mercs is one of my favorite Genesis games.
omg thank you for this video have for years remeberd a overhead run and gun game to snes i did have, but it got stolen so did not remeber name but now i know and can get it again on snes was super smash t.v
@danger1337 See the criteria required in the description for games to meet in order to be included.
The Genesis version of Mercs might be single player, but at least it has an original game mode that wasn't present in any other version, including the arcade, that lets you play as different characters w/different abilities. And Shock Troopers should be released on XBLA/PSN w/online play. That would rock!
This may be a stretch. What about Legendary Wings? I was thrilled to see time soldiers. I talked to my mom and aunt about that game for several hours. We were going to the mall the next day and I got to go to the arcade. It was a great game.
Project Overkill is an interesting game that I've never seen you all cover. It's an overhead shooter for the PSX
