Rail & Sail with Stena Line from Belfast to Wigan! (31/05/24). I decided to try out a Rail & Sail ticket to get me back from Northern Ireland to England. The ticket was amazingly priced and included travelling on a Stena Line ferry, a coach and several trains!

The Irish Sea can be brutal. I remember sailing from Liverpool and as soon as we left the Mersey estuary, it was like being on a big dipper. One old bloke ran on the deck, took his top denture out, and threw up over the side and as he was in mid chunder, a seagull took his teeth. Never laughed as much in me life. X

The best bit about these is that if you get the Anytime Return version, the outbound is valid for 5 days! Handy if you want to go from the south coast, and up to Scotland on the sleeper to grab the ferry the next day instead of trying to do the whole thing in one day.

For £67 (day) or £111 (night crossing, includes cabin) from ang Greater Anglia station (including London Liverpool Street and Peterborough though you may use only Greater Anglia trains) to the Hook of Holland. I did the RailSail from Lincoln to Dublin Ferryport as part of a trip to Belfast. Not bad for £54. Although the Arriva Trains Wales service conked out on the way to Holyhead and I missed my booked ferry and had to wait a few hours for the next one. That meant that I had even longer to indulge in some more wine and nibbles in the Irish Ferries Club Class lounge (paid for directly with IF). And, Arriva had to refund the whole ticket price because I arrivwd three hours late into Dublin. So, a win, win.

You could have got easyjet to Liverpool and would have been there in a fraction of the time for around the same kind of money!

That was the day I met you and got a selfie in Central. The train was very late into London as there was an incident at Watford. We were going to London so my wife could see Barry Manilow. She had seen him the previous two weekends and was back in London to see him again the following weekend too. The big rock out in the sea south of Ayr is Ailsa Craig. It’s used to make curling stones. Your Dodds of Troon bus probably took the A77. The coast road from Culzean to Ayr is better and includes the Electric Brae. A hill that looks like you’re going up when you’re really going down. It’s fun on a bike. Ayr Station Hotel had been bought and left to fall into disrepair for years. For a while it was in a big tent to stop bits landing on the track then, to nobody’s surprise, it burnt down.

Did you consider getting the Enterprise train down to Dublin Connolly and get the SailRail from Dublin to Holyhead on Irish Ferries?

It's mad that there's no railway from Cairnryan/Stranraer to Carlisle. Going all the way up to Glasgow, though pretty, is very circuitous.
