Rail Road Camper Car RV MotorHome Tiny House

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This would be the coolest tiny home a railroad car converted into a tiny home. This was a purpose built train car that would house workers doing maintenance on the rail road. Its not a skoolie or a bus conversion but pretty darn cool!

I saw one of these in operation in Florida back in the 80's, and my very first thought was "that would make the most fantastic home ever!". I also discovered a very old self-propelled car abandoned on a siding in a small town in Georgia. For a few minutes I had dreams of fixing it up into a motor home, but of course I never did.

As Mark Shields said, Sperry Rail Services tests rails for defects. The door you entered was at the back with a paper strip recording information on a strip which was directly connected to the movement of the car for a permanent record. The engine room provides power to move the car and electricity(the "motors") for the high amperage going through the rails to detect any defects and for lighting the car. The bunks are for the Sperry crew. The 2 or 3 railroad personnel would come and go depending on what part of the railroad the car was on at the time and if the car was testing or travelling. Normal testing speed was about 5 or 6 mph. Travel speed could be as much as 45 or 50 mph. The last section you entered was the control end or front where the motorman (engineer) sat also a railroad employee acting as a pilot who knew the section of track the car was travelling on. Most early Sperry cars were converted from selfpropelled cars railroads had used to reduce the cost of passenger train service in the 1920's thru 1940's.

I remember seeing one of these Sperry Rail Services cars here in Australia back in the early 1980's, I think it was number 141 it was recording track flaws on the tracks in The Blue Mountains town of Katoomba in New South Wales. I remember waiting at the level crossing for what seemed an eternity on a day of 35 plus degrees celsius while it shuffled back and forth.

Was not a camp car. It's a Sperry ultrasound rail defect detector... used to find cracks in rail.

Digital equipment has made this analog stuff obsolete. Psst...don't tell the railroads.

They are not obsolete at all. These cars have been upgraded with the latest technology and are still in operation. The Ultrasonic and Induction systems that were installed on this car are still the same base technology used today, only it's been modernized.

The car was used as part of a maintenance program and its also designed with living areas. I don't think he's very far off on its description Technical Terry.

@@madtrucker0983 He called it a "Camp Car". It's nothing like a camp car. Look up what a camp car is. A camp car is not self propelled and serves no other purpose other than providing living quarters for MOW crews. This is a rail defect detection car. It has living space for the crew that operates it. It's self propelled and has on board testing equipment.

Wherever this car was located it is very poorly maintained. It might be helpful if one was to do their "homework" BEFORE presenting (misguided) comments about such equipment this type of video might be more educational.
