‘The galaxy is changing,.. Old Jarls lose their wisdom, young ones forget their strength. Stormcaller has dreams nightly that make him haggard, and he does not trouble easily. Even Grimnar laughs less than he did.’ The Wolf Lord placed his hands together again. Those deadly gauntlets, ones that had ended the lives of a thousand souls, formed a bulky pyramid...' 'Ingvar stood before Blackmane. Out of habit, his eyes ran over the Jarl’s armour, scanning for weaknesses, assessing strength, gauging the likely route of attack. The process was automatic with him, as unconscious an act as breathing. The experience was sobering. When Ingvar had last served as a member of the Rout on Fenris, he had barely known the name Ragnar Blackmane - a Blood Claw in Berek’s Great Company, already tipped for an illustrious future, but no more so than many of the headstrong berserks they pulled off the ice. Now, six decades later, the whelp had grown. Ragnar’s face still had the supple bloom of youth but his armour was scarred as badly as any other Jarl’s, draped with age-bleached trophies of a hundred kills and carrying the clenched-fist sigils of Berek’s old company amid the howling wolfshead device of his own. The blackmane pelt was slung over rune-graven shoulder guards, tight with weathering. A huge chainsword hung idle at his side, chipped and scratched from use. Ragnar smiled, exposing short, sharp fangs. Glossy sideburns ran down each jaw, each as black as the long top knot that mingled fluidly with the pelt on his shoulders...' '...The Young King had none of the grizzled majesty of Grimnar, nor the raw elemental potency of Stormcaller, but now that Ingvar had witnessed him in the flesh he finally began to understand why he had been elevated so far and so quickly... Ingvar felt his pride stir within him. It was hard to remember that Blackmane was elevated far above him in the arcane hierarchy of Fenris, that the Jarl’s word was law, that if he ordered Ingvar into the maws of Hel then he was honour-bound to obey without question. So young...' The Wolf Lord led his men onwards, coordinating the advancing packs with whispers across the short-range vox. For a time, it worked well. ‘Jarl,’ came a murmured voice. ‘To me, sire.’ Ragnar looked back over his shoulder, scarcely seeing Ulrik’s silhouette near a fallen wall. When even genhanced vision and a finely tuned retinal display struggled to pierce the murk, things were dire indeed. He crossed the shattered road in a low run and reached the Wolf Priest’s side. ‘Slayer?’ In reply, Ulrik brushed his armoured palm across a section of the tumbled wall still standing. A crude but complicated rune was marked there, cut into the stone. Scraped with a knife. ‘That’s… Cretacian,’ Ragnar said. ‘I know little of their tongue,’ said Ulrik. ‘Do you know this mark’s meaning?’ He did. Ragnar nodded, touching the scratched sigil with his armoured fingertips. ‘It’s my name.’ ‘Do you jest, Young King?’ ‘No, Slayer. It’s my name as a Cretacian hieroglyph. “Mane of Shadow”.’ He brushed more dirt away, revealing a series of smaller runic letters. Ulrik said nothing. He simply waited. ‘It’s a warning,’ Ragnar said. ‘Nightblade is dead.’ Razortongue’s voice echoed down the years, drifting through his mind. Luck runs out, Blackmane. Luck always runs out. ‘The Flesh Tearers are in the city. At least… they were. We need to reach the southern promethium refineries.’ ‘And why is that, sire?’ Ragnar bared his teeth in a rueful, weary grin. ‘Because that’s what these markings are telling us to do. And an actual mission that involves more than running, hiding and fighting in the dark until we die has great appeal. Gather the packs, Slayer. We hunt.’ Several thousand Imperial warriors were using the mountain fastness as a fallback base. Alongside the huge regiments of Imperial Guard soldiers were thirty Black Templars, a strike force of the supposedly extinct Shadow Wolf Chapter, an armoured battalion of the Subjugators and a recon detachment of Flesh Tearers Scouts. Over the coming days, the jarl’s warriors would be rearmed, resupplied and reinforced from the Einherjar fleet in orbit. However, the first soul to greet Ragnar was waiting when the gunship’s ramp lowered. Time had changed him, scarring his features more than the Young King recalled, and adding several bronze trinkets and honour badges to the warrior’s battered ceramite. He was from a Chapter that cared little for armour ornamentation, however. Little separated him from the appearance of a line soldier. The Flesh Tearer shook Ragnar’s hand, wrist to wrist in a warrior’s grip. ‘You live,’ he said. ‘I live, Vorain. How did you know we were down there?’ ‘It was your hunter, Drekka, who first got word to us. We went into the city to seek him, but he’d already fallen. You saw our warnings?’ ‘I saw them. The Allfather alone knows how many you must have scratched across the city for us to find even a few.’ ‘Even I cannot be sure. My Scouts have been ghosting through the ruins and taking heads every day for weeks.’ ‘Thank you,’ Ragnar said, humbled by the gesture. ‘We’ll speak again...' - Wolf Lord Ragnar Blackmane & his friend Brother Captain Vorain from the Flesh Tearer's Chapter, Scout Commander & Master of Recruits

At the point in time when bullets can pass through the interdimensional walls. When firepower takes up the entire and eternity of space and time, all being stuck in a never ending life and death cycle as bullets recover and destroy their bodies in quick succession. No one able to think about anything but the sheer force of the bullets rapidly flying literally everywhere in the materium, turning the warp itself into nothing but a sea of semi-automatic weaponry. Then there will be enough dakka. Or, at least almost.

The thing with Ghaz, and to a lesser degree Ragnar, is they're legacy characters. They're from early early EARLY 40k back when the scale was much smaller, and most of the lore and history hadn't been written yet. Ghaz is supposed to be some big bad, and 30 years ago he was. Now he's competing for space against the Black Ork, who fought Horus, Dorn and Mortarion at the same time and won and the Emperor had to personally intervene with 2000 Custodes just go beat him, the entire War of the Beast and the Primorks who assaulted every single space marine chapter, Terra, Mars, and most of the Imperium at the same time and were only beat through the loss of Vulkan, all the Imperial Fist, almost half of the Chapters, trillions of humans, and required the founding of the Ordo Xenos, the Deathwatch and still took 100+ years of fighting, Urruk and the Ullanor Crusade that took 3 Primarchs, 3 entire legions, and according to the Forge World books was about a decade long and cost tens of thousands of Marine lives and almost crippled the entire Great Crusade. Hell I'd even put Snagrod as having done more than Ghaz. He at least won the battle he set out to fight. Ghaz has fought over the same planet, twice, and lost both times to only a few million humans and a few thousand Space Marines. Ragnar is the "Young King" and youngest Wolf Lord in the history of the Space Wolves...if we don't count the entirety of the Space Wolf Legion and the hundreds of Wolf Lords who were younger, 'cause the crusade only lasted 200 years and Ragnar was about 100 when he took command of his company. And even then the "Young King" part is getting old. The character himself, as the youngest wolf lord, has been around longer than Ragnar was supposed to have been Wolf Lord. He's only been in command of his company for a decade or 2 when the 13th Black Crusade started. I just feel like the setting has gotten out from under the lore of those two characters.

Arguably a space viking hero is the one most well matched against a great ork tactician, since they have plot justification to want to pull off insane acts of bravery, stubborn resistance or try crazy plans. With some luck they may use the contrast between the strategist and the improviser to show similarities, which could lead down some interesting directions indeed. A hero shapes crowds, war shapes heroes, what shape would the conflict with the Ghazghkull cast the space wolves into ?

Back in the day (when they were called Space Wolves - which bugged the buhjeeziss out of me), they were my first and only favorite. Thanks for this step into a new series. It should go quite well with your Orktober presents. Cheers🥃

Space Wolves are my favorite and my first 40k love but I always felt like their official lore is often brushed over rather quickly, a lot of their novels feel like they exist far away from the rest of the imperium (which kind of makes sense), and I’m not sure why they keep getting further from the Viking aesthetics 🤔

Really, are Great Companies closer to Battle Companies, or more like Chapters in and of themselves? Because they've lost so many brothers recently that they have to be so much larger and more well equipped than a simple company to continue fighting on so many fronts.

For the most part they aren't Codex Compliant so each Jarl can command anywhere from 100 to 1000 marines but the Jarls answer to the Old Wolf in all aspects.

Excellent! Thank you for referring to the sons of Russ properly. The Vlka Fenryka do not call themselves space wolves. The only other living space marine that could've matched Thrakka would be Dante

Thanks for the new video, i was waiting for someone to upload this topic as i feel (Ork Player here), that this was a bit disappointing. I don't want to take anything away from Ragnar, but Ghaz is the Ork faction leader. Its true Dante also killed (lol) the Hive tyrant, but at least Dante is the figure head of Blood Angels if not one of the most prominent figures before Guilliman's revival for the entire SM faction. my second point is what a missed opportunity, Ork are engaged in War everywhere and Ghaz in known to be in a few conflicts, Octavia and Armageddon being 2 huge conflicts they could have chosen for this. Even Ragnar has better CSM/warp enemies that he should be chasing, especially being the emprahs exekusionar and that XP

I think I saw that guy in Sanctus Reach video game... Also, wolf cavalry, with axes, riding on Space Marine-sized wolfs, with axes. And I think they had better stats than bikes, which they also had, with axes. All-in-all, Orks wore axes better, and IG were better at the pathos and overcoming part... not to mention their campaign was short enough not to become stale. Pretty decent game, all things considered. I'd rate it 5/7.

Separate comment. Hey Baldermort, I know this is a huge and unreasonable request, but I think it would bring quite a few views. Would you possibly do a tierlist/ranking/discussion of the mightiest and best of the modern Space Marines? I've often wondered how Dante would fare against Grimnar, and I would just love a large community discussion around the modern chapter Masters and the champions of each chapters. Can Lysander beat Helbrecht? And so on and so forth.
