With respect to your question about being blacklisted. After 9/11, Clear Channel communications owned almost all radio stations in the US and they sent out a memo banning the playing of certain songs by various artists. For Rage Against the Machine, they just went ahead and banned all of their songs from being played on radio stations. So there you go.

there was also an incident on SNL i think, where they were scheduled to play a few songs and got shut down after one, or something like that. don't remember exactly

What was awake when this was released would not be what is considered awake today. Ratm we’re not for either American political party but they were far left in their politics. “Awake” right wing clowns might think otherwise but they don’t deal in reality anyway

Next is simple: "Bullet in your head", Pinkpop festival (93 or 94 can't remember)... Zack delivers... The whole 1st album is bangers over bangers, true gem. Another I love to is "Renegades" where they cover other song and do feat's with rappers like Cypress Hill... RATM is one of the greatest band in the world, close to Pink Floyd in my heart.

In Canada, at least the Vancouver area where I was, this was all over the radio all the time as well as a lot of other powerful singles from them. Top that off with them using Thích Quảng Đức on the cover of their debut album that hit every record chart and it's safe to say they did indeed wake up a big part of my generation.

Saw a recent video of tom morellos pedalboard. It's surprisingly simple. Wah, phase, pair of delays, eq for boost and that crazy sound was the digitech whammy. He also has his pickup selector wired with the center position off. He flicks the switch like he's strumming to get a real staccato sound. No samples, no synths, no turntables just a modded guitar and pedals.

Yep, while he does use a few effects, the crazy sounds he makes are mostly from crazy techniques he's come up with when he's bored and just like, hmm, I wonder what happens if I touch the lead directly to the strings, or do a pick scrape with an Allen key

Definitely keep the lyrics or closed captions up for each of them. Rage’s entire catalogue was essentially banned from radio play after 9/11, but it didn’t hurt their popularity. In fact, they were just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week. The guitarist, Tom Morello, was the only band member to go and represent the group. I think if you wanna understand even half of the impact and how the government and those in power reacted to rage against the machine in general -- yeah they didn't like how big they were at ALL. The best overview video I've seen that would be short enough for a react is by Alternative Press on youtube - Rage Against The Machine: 10 MASSIVE RATM Political Moments. But they have a long history with the government and powers that be.

Back in the day, this particular song didn't get played on the radio. But I do remember hearing 'Bulls on Parade' & 'Killing in the Name' on the radio (heavily edited & usually only during the late night DJ's show). But I don't remember anyone 'going after' them to try to shut them down or anything. During that time the pearl-clutchers were more focused on the 'devil-worshipping' metal bands, iirc. Also this was GenX time--so the adults barely knew where we were 1/2 the time, let alone what we were listening to. If there wasn't like a pentagram or the devil on the album cover, I don't think they noticed what music was coming in & out of the house.

I woke up... and noticed the intro was Kashmir.

The guitar part is a double octave up pedal. Probably with a phasor and distortion pedal knowing toms style.

I liked the band when I was younger. In highschool when it first came out it touched my youth rage and loved the music. But as I aged I realized the message was preaching for anarchy with no answers. The USA has its issues, the human condition is flawed but going communism is not the way. If Rage made more music about self introspection with that music we can turn this ship around. 👍
