One aspect of Evil Empire that makes it stand out in the Rage discography - to me, anyway - is the production. Compared to their other releases, it sounds very raw and punk-ish. Almost all of Zack's vocals are distorted throughout the record and the guitar sounds are really sharp and abrasive.

I think my tier list would go: S: self titled, Evil Empire A: The Battle of Los Angeles B or C (not sure it depends on the day): Renegades the debut is just so masterfully produced, and every riff, bassline, beat, hook, etc. are just so iconic, hard to not have that as a 10/10 for me Evil Empire I basically agree with everything you said Battle is imo mostly a great record, although I do think the production doesn't hit as hard, I absolutely love tracks like "Mic Check", "Maria", "New Millennium Homes" and "War Within A Breath" Renegades is tricky cause I did not know it was a cover album for a while due to my general song knowledge at the time I first heard it, so for me it just felt like weird experimental Rage, but now knowing it is a cover album, I def think some songs fall shorter than they used to, although some of the covers do slap for real. I will say I am leaning towards C just because I don't think I'll ever listen to this album as a whole again.

It’s one of the few hard hitting albums that I think benefits from the polish and I think it really holds up to today. I agree 100% with this list, Rage is my favorite band of all time. In the studio and recording process, i always felt like the beggining of the end was when the band did not improved during Battle Of Los Angeles like they did, more tastefully, in Evil Empire. That's seem the time Zack "gave up" because there was always turmoil between him and Tom about what the band should sound. In terms of composition during that time, it was heading towards what would become Audioslave.

@chaos5840 seriously? Evil Empire is where they won their Grammy (for "Tire Me," no less, a song that wasn't even on the radio all that much). It also has two of their most popular songs with "People of the Sun" and "Bulls on Parade" (back to back, no less). I've only heard everybody talk about Evil Empire. Self-titled was mostly a close second from many of the fans I've talked to, but I've never seen anybody put self-titled as their favorite

100% agree with this ranking.. Their entire discography is pretty tight but Evil Empire is one of my all time favs and I'm not even the biggest fan of the genre.. You could tell Zack was even more impassioned about the messages he was expressing from spending time in Chiapas, and it lended to a more focused & sympathetic angle to his lyricism instead of just raw angsty fed up outrage like how their debut was. It's also just overall slicker & more badass than their other releases. Plus the cover art & no skip tracklist ugh I could go on..

It's a pretty interesting little discography, each album has its own strengths & weaknesses, and I guess it's a matter of what you care about more. I think I like the first album best even though it is a little less of the pure RATM sound. In some ways I've come to like those little moments of variety, as the band definitely had a tendency to get a little one-note. (The little singing part with Maynard on Know Your Enemy, and a few unusually bluesy solos, etc.) And Zach's lyrics are a little less developed, still throwing out hip-hop cliches at weird times occasionally. But most of all for me, the song structures are the most exciting on this record. They stretch out a little bit and never get old. "Bullet in the Head" is a marvel, the song just keeps building and building and BUILDING. Evil Empire I respect more, I suppose, for being even more unique in its sound. Undeniably a more fully developed version of the band. It's a really close call, they're both fantastic, the sight edge to the first one is just that it's more exciting to me. The songs on Evil Empire that try to stretch and build like the best songs on the first album (i.e. "The Wind Below") don't pull it off QUITE as well IMO. Obviously the less said about the covers album the better. Some of them are incredible, others are just what you'd expect, and the best one (Tom Joad) was already out before anyway. It's also pretty terribly mixed, classic example of brickwalling (it was 2000, after all). Pretty disappointing on the heels of their generally well-mixed stuff. This album kinda feels like it sets the stage for Audioslave, building a very straightforward instrumental palette for the band that they don't deviate from a whole lot.
