RAGBRAI DAY 4 AMES to DSM Record Breaking Heat and Rider Numbers

Day 4 proved to be a great day coming into Des Moines from Ames. Although the heat was building during the day, many places had water spray going to help keep the riders cool.
This video has a lot of riding footage in it, so please enjoy that slice of RAGBRAI that is filled with the sounds of gear and rider chatter. I heard reported that one area between Ankeny and Des Moines was estimating 4000 riders going by every hour - officially or not - it gives the scope of the masses.
Day 4 also seemed to be the mass exodus day, as a lot of folks just bailed in Des Moines. Including yours truly.
With the heat indexes on the rise, paired up with the elevation gain coming out of Des Moines, we made the choice to call it.
I would shout out to the folks of Polk City - thank you for putting all those hydrants on to keep riders cool. The atmosphere downtown in the square was awesome. Crowded YES, but people were having a lot of fun. Thanks again Polk City.
I also noticed that many of the non official routes were being traveled between the Ames and DSM area. Although we stuck to the route, I feel that a lot of folks took some short cuts in effort to beat the heat.
Keep an eye out for our RAGBRAI WRAP UP VIDEO coming soon. Until then take care of your dash and we will see you on the next one.

Sorry you had to call it but I certainly understand it with that heat. I took off the day after Des Moines and was able to finish out the last two days. Hopefully we’ll see you out there next year.

Thanks. I just have never done well in the heat / humidity. And sleeping in your own bed in the AC thing, is a powerful draw, in decision making. I too hope our paths cross on a future RAGBRAI.

RAGBRAI 2012, day three, radiated heat from the road 136 degree's. The first three days of that RAGBRAI set records. I know, I was there. Gatorade became my best friend.

I learned a few things, when riding while it is hot out. First, a wet towel around your neck is a BIG help. Two, a light weight long sleeved shirt, just too keep the sun off your arms. I did not have a long sleeved shirt in 2012. So I made sleeves out of dish towels that I picked up at a grocery store. Both kept me cool. I will be riding next year. I hope it wont be as crowded.

Have to agree - Polk City pulled out all of the stops. Possibly best past thru town of the week

Really upsetting when we entered Slater and see a huge crane flying the American flag backwards. 🤬 stars go on the left. And Polk City for the win for water. DEFINITELY not Ankeny. Ankeny was sad. You got in early. When I got in around 3-4 it was 110° feels like.

@@philandthedash1682 I even yelled out the flag was backwards and people looked at me like WTF are you talking about. 🤦🏼 a proud American understands. I have also reached out to the company. They opened the message and no response. 🤬
