i gotta say here in montana, rafters and kayakers and especially fly fishermen in drift boats are the most unfriendly people ive met on the rivers here. Running the upper missouri river breaks monument, I must have passed 35 kayakers in one afternoon and made a point to wave at every one....I got two waves back. Everyone in a jet boat waved and looked happy to see us! I share the river with everyone....it belongs to everyone.... but the self propelled folks don't seem to see it that way....unless someone is in a bad way 35 miles from the truck in BFE, then they are happy to share

The central question is "why do they behave this way?" I'm confident that if there were no float craft, and if they were the FIRST fly fisherman in a drift boat, they would behave like any normal friendly person. But as things stand, they soon meet other floaters with a bad attitude, and for some reason they absorb this attitude as their own. In other words, its just a cultural vendetta thing, passed down from one generation to the next. The same with hanging a BA. Who first got the idea to do this, anyway? It isn't a "new" idea to each BA hanger. They pick it up from somebody else. Fortunately, few do this. In a large group I saw one guy hanging a BA, and everybody else was clearly embarrassed. "We don't know that guy." But the same is true amongst jet boaters, with cultural inheritance of behaviors.
