    It is a shame Rafa was under the destructive hands of Hicks & Gillette for the latter half of his tenure. They forced him to sell arguably the best midfielder in the world (Alonso) because we needed the money. A lot of people blame Rafa for that sale which is a shame :(

  • @taliamason7986

    @taliamason7986

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Chicken_Dippers That sale was his fault. He literally went after Gareth Barry who played the same role as Xabi Alonso . Alonso rightly felt betrayed and disrespected by that and had every right to move to Real Madrid. In the end it was pointless because we ended up signing freaking Aqualani instead while the at the time newly cash injected Manchester City signed Barry. I love the man and respect his tenure as a whole at the club. But his obsession with a mid table level player over one that was far better in almost every aspect and achieved way more in his career was beyond ridiculous. It's no different to when SAF traded Jaap Stam for Juan Sebastian Veron for Manchester United.

    @jermaine tobin it's fairly bold but like most of my opinions, it has it's base in everything I've read and the fact that modern football is light years ahead of the Shankly/Paisley era, in terms of tactics. It's no coincidence that so many players such as Carra, Torres, Xabi, Gerrard, Ayala, Mascherano etc have said he's the best tactical mind they've ever seen. The man has a encyclopedic knowledge and memory for detail that has astounded (and annoyed) many of his players. He was using analytics before it was really a part of football. His teams consistently perform beyond the sum of their parts due to his intelligence. There are newspaper articles from the guardian and independent that you should check out that go into great detail on his intelligence talking with former players/staff from Valencia right up to Chelsea. He isn't the warmest or the most emotionally intelligent but he's definitely the smartest!

    This is one of the best interviews because it gives you great insight into what the manager and player were thinking & communicating at halftime and during the game (including during the penalties). It shows you what Rafa felt he missed during the 1st half tactically and what he needed to do to make things better. This was more about tactics for him and less about hoping to motivate and emotionally galvanize a possibly shellshocked club.

    To add to my comment: Some managers have a single minded self belief about them - they transfer that emotion & belief to the players and the players rally and play better. Rafa is different. He already knows that he has a team full of character players (that he knowingly built into the system himself via signings & player development over months and years). So his job in that moment of the final was to tactically improve his team and hope for the best thereafter. As good fortune would have it, Liverpool delivered a fantastic win!
