I was the Assistant Equipment Officer at Tangmere in 1950 during the Cold War with nos 1 and 43 squadrons . It is a scandal that this RAF station which was so important to the defence of this country in WW11 has not been preserved as an historical monument to all who served and died there.

Having watched this wonderful documentary many times but especially now in this time of 2023 - I do wonder what all those brave young men would have thought today? By that I mean an invasion by any other name has commenced of people at odds with us,our culture traditions and all those things our young men fought for! I'm glad they're not here to see the demise of our country as we knew it. R.I.P to all those Brave fighter boys. R.I.P to our country..

A country that valued it past and it's present would have found the money to preserve this priceless place.

I was Stationed at Tangmere (A former Battle of Britain frontline fighter station) until it's closure in October 1970 up to then the unit came under Air Support Command. Very happy memories of my time there. Nearly 50 years ago and I can still recall names and personalities in my mind's eye. It seems a long time ago now. Memories continue to live on.

Thank you for posting this thoughtful film. Mention of The Windmill reminded me that my Mother danced there before she met my Dad who was a navigator in Lancs

Subscribed, I used to practice engine failures at what was left of Tangmere in the late 1990's.

My mom is in the picture of the women in 1940. She was there during the bombing raid in August 1940. I've visited twice.

Great little museum, some great artifacts including James Nicholson VC uniform he bailed out in winning the VC. Some nice signed prints too. Also Artist Robert Taylor's original Nicholson VC painting. A few planes one of which is a replica Hurricane built for the movie Battle of Britain...powered by a rover V8, just so it could spin the prop and taxi. I really liked my visit.

Such a shame to see such a historic place in ruins. It was Beautiful in its heyday

So interesting to see the history many happy days exploring the airfield as a child

I always find it funny when senior officers say " with regret " An officer that served at Tangmere as a station commander and then latter shut it . hhmmmm . How many senior officers have done the same since then to further their own careers , more political than RAF . That's why the RAF now is a shadow of its former self , but there are plenty of senior officers out there retired on good pensions while many of their former airmen and women struggle or are homeless . Some of you out there might not like these words but they are the truth .

I think Nathan has every right to make his point of view, irrespective of whether he has been in the service or not. I suspect his point of view is quite accurate to generate this patronising attempt at a put down.

12 years service and not a penny.

My father was stationed at Tangmere during WWII. He was ground crew, so he must have fixed planes for Douglas Bader.

that bastard - the man instrumental for getting Dowding the sack and who was allegedly shot down by his own side, that self-publicist who claimed to be a war hero although he spend over 4 years in Colditz, that man who would never have been heard of had he not had tin legs, that bastard........

Why can't the lottery spend some of its billions on restoring Tangmere as a memorial to the many people killed there in the war. That would be better than some of the crackpot waste they seem to prefer. I often visit the little church and the RAF graves there. Just up is a pub called the Douglas Bader but never been in yet so must give it a go sometime.

Wonderful documentary - Does anybody know the name of the musical piece that plays at the start and end of this documentary? Tangmere aviation museum is well worth a visit!

Very annoying these historical sites are just left abandoned...as i understand it the operations tower is all that is left at tangmere.

Well it's an old VHS tape!! I can hear it ok through my phones speaker. Try earphones.

Absolutely gutting that nothing of it is left standing just large open disused fields! Imagine if it had been kept preserved as it were in its glory days. 😢
