Thank you so much for posting this. I used to teach Crispian’s daughter Rachel...her mum gave me a fabulous history of Radio London book that belonged to Crispian. So so sad that he died here in Kettering hospital. Just great to hear his voice broadcasting at that time.

@@Gail1991 Goodness me, Rachel😅..how absolutely wonderful to hear from you! So kind of you to respond😍. I still think of you a lot and wonder if you ever did become the children’s’ tv presenter that you were considering as a career. Radio Caroline has always been in my heart since 1964. Tomorrow, I’ll be 72😱. Best Wishes from Derrick Green.😘

The whistle is due to the station being approx. 1KHz off the frequency of the co-channel station underneath it. Question: I remember this happening early on for the “259m” transmissions and also the “389m” transmissions. Anyone able to confirm these cases or even explain why they this was done? (consciously or otherwise)?

I remember the whistle on 199 metres. I could never work out why they had moved to 199 metres. As during the autumn of 1972 reception on 259 metres (during the time they were testing), where I lived in Cambridge had been fine. I thought perhaps that the station was being 'jammed'. ( Whilst they were on 199 metres). In the new year of 1973 Radio Caroline disappeared altogether. (They were back on 259 metres by then). The station did not return until the late spring. Then it was on two frequencies, 259 metres and 389 metres. The intention had been to operate both an all-day English and Dutch service. However, due to generator difficulties, this did not last long. I believe it was the 15th July when Radio Atlantis emerged as the 'lone voice' of Caroline. By then, there was then no English Service until 'Radio Seagull', which arrived late evenings late that summer.

I recall my Dad (radio operator, 49 Squadron (Scampton) WWII) telling me that the hetrodyne was due to the broadcaster being too near an adjacent frequency. 199 metres was actually 197.3 and originally 259m was in reality 253.7 (later altered).
