Radie Peat & Daragh Lynch (LANKUM) - 'Hares on the Mountain' from episode 3 of 'This Ain't No Disco'

This is the version of 'Hares on the Mountain' that Radie and Daragh put together for episode 3 of This Ain't No Disco (go check out the whole episode).
It's largely inspired by the version that Shirley Collins and Davy Graham played on their seminal album 'Folk Roots, New Routes', though this one's a bit slower, due in part to the fact that the guitar used here is a baritone guitar that was made by Frank Tate for Lisa O'Neill, and due also in part to the fact that we like making tunes sound like they're on Diazepam...

I’ve listened to this maybe a few hundred times. It’s absolutely hauntingly beautiful. So simple but so lasting. It’s honestly just perfect. I love classic Irish folk but this is something different and raw and it’s amazing.

It's an English folk song; perhaps that's what gives it a slightly different vibe if you're more familiar with Irish music.

Yep, & they're all playing at endoftheroad fest this year. I always go but I'm so happy to be seeing them there on the best festival stage. The Garden stage.
There's not many I'd put up there with Luke Kelly.. but this lady has got the soul of Dublin in her and so did that man!
Who on sweet Earth are the 81 dip sticks that don't like this?.... This voice and guitar are timeless, heart stirring and moving.

The sound with that guitar against the sea and traffic and her singing.. How perfect can it get xx
Well, I have to say that my entire morning has now been taken up listening to them, drinking them in like a strong, sweet porter. Wonderful. I am trying to persuade the mammy to come and see them in Brighton on December (23). I will be learning several of these no doubt and singing them for ever more. It's great when you find something that speaks to your soul.

I don't know how I ended up watching this but I'm glad. Probably the best that's happened to me today.
OMG I'm totally in love with their icy steel and fire, best band in the last 20 years, a sonic vision that brings tears to my eyes and a chill up the spine, & God i love the natural sounds of the seagulls and howling wind, thank you universe for allowing us to hear this wonderful soulful tapestry, Kudos

Just to know that this song and these people exist fills me with joy.
Getting the Paul Mescal bump this morning!
Timeless. I can see her 100 years ago singing at a fair, eyes closed
This is utterly sublime - yearning, wistful, deeply honest and true. Radie's voice makes me weak at the knees.
I reckon I've listened to this song about 20 times in the last two days. Raidie's voice is this beautiful, haunting ethereal hum. Coupled with her accent, it's pure perfection. This is now a song I'll listen to until I die.
Just come across this, be watching more!! And watched it a 100 times since, deadly
A few thousand plays in. At least once daily and it's not a bore
A grower of a song. Now I can't stop listening to it! See ye in London in October, it's been too long!
This song Takes me back to the times that I never knew and to the ones who I once loved so true then leaves me alone their desperately trying to find my way threw back home to them before its over again when the song ends a flying vision of a life that was shamelessly taken and the names I was given Forsaken When I was Stolden all those years ago the song suddenly ends and then once again my old first short life is all but forgiven and Forgotten by me till the next time I play this song I secretly call adoption P$ (It's always that somber baritone guitar That finally breaks my heart)
What,a voice what a Soul, Slainte,mi Love
Currently living many miles from home and this song has become an obsession. So haunting and melancholic, every time I listen it nearly brings me to tears but it's also oddly soothing and comforting. Amazing stuff!

Shirley Collins and Davy Graham's version is an arrangement of a version collected by Cecil Sharp in Somerset, England in 1906. I included many versions (including authentic traditional ones) in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pK58m6qag7ebeqQ.html The series compares similar recordings of the same traditional songs by traditional singers and popular musicians. Feel free to subscribe to my channel if you're interested in traditional folk music!
The sweetest sound. Love everyone in this video so much.
Such a beautiful voice. And this version is such a heartwrenching interpretation. After all, when you look at he lyrics on the paper they are quite lighthearted. But now it's like this longing for youth or something like that.

I just came across this music and have listened to several of her songs now. I love with her voice, it's original and you can feel it on a level that's pretty rare. I find instrument choices perfectly matched and the skills of the artists playing them so they compliment her voice to be exceptional as well.
