I used to have a “friend” who used biting sarcasm to make criticisms of me. When I called her out, she always claimed it was just a joke. I ended our “friendship”. Reason: Jealousy. She husband hunted until she finally married at 57, while I married young. She had always claimed she wanted to marry someone tall, dark and handsome, with an education and money. What she married was an old man who looked like Santa Claus, on his third marriage, who claimed to be a millionaire. In fact, he was an inept narcissist and a con, with a trail of businesses shut down by the government. My husband is tall, red headed and handsome. He was a tradesman who built our own large home himself. We also invested in multiple real estate properties and have done very well for ourselves. Jealousy.

Anger follows fear, jealousy, frustration, loss, etc. A person is not "just angry" they are angry because they feel "x" and are trying to cope with that. Then go ahead and flip my argument upside down. My point was the irony of him thinking we haven’t heard it before. I know there’s little i could say that people haven’t heard before. So I wouldn’t think I’m going to shock others. Except maybe when I talk to a specific person or group that could be easily shocked because of being naïve or very conservative. My point wasn’t that you haven’t heard what I say before. I know you have. The point that he thinks “the snowflakes” haven’t heard his arguments before. They have. I don’t like it when others are condescending towards others, calling them snowflakes and thinking they would be shocked by you.

This was amazing and just shows childhood trauma never leaves the victim's psyche, but can and often does cripple emotional growth. Bullying led him to stop his carefree "skipping", but reports it was in his best interest so as to gloss over any feeling of hurt or sadness the bullies caused him. Then he reports that he was into drugs, which is not indicative of "carefree" child behavior. THEN reports abandonment by his mother and basically views his father as a pussy as he did not defend Jimmy as a child. So Jimmy turned into the person who could not be "hurt" by anyone now, but instead chooses to get the drop on people by bullying them first, thus negating any negative statements made toward him afterward. Jimmy become what he hated as a child to emotionally justify the hurtful memories.

I just feel we need to be careful not to let the fact he has substance problems give him a bit of a get out clause for his terrible thoughts like homophobia-if anything I found that for me and many around me at the time addiction gave us a more compassionate look at others who can be marginalised since addicts are also marginalised Edit-i agree though, he isn't garbage and calling him that helps noone-we need to try and bring people in so that we can talk through properly and thoroughly why ideas like his are wrong and hopefully they will understand and then change for the better. Naturally that won't work with everyone and some people really are just horrible and won't change their minds, those are the ones who should just be ignored as much as possible socially as well as fought with ideas but for some there is a chance of changing their minds and we don't know which ones they are for the most part until we let them in a little and talk to them without immediately labelling them things like garbage. It's a frustrating journey but it's worth it if it changes things for the better for those who are socially affected the worst

The reason Jimmy has so many contradictory ideas is because he has developed them as a defense mechanism about his own experiences and his own behaviors. He believes he might be a victim, but he knows that behaving like a victim only leads to negative emotions and life decisions; and yet he rationalizes that he turned out okay considering his life choices. In short, he gives himself a pass, preserving his ability to make poor decisions, because he’s a victim. To summarize: He accepts himself as he is, but he’s uncomfortable with the idea that he’s only suppressing his negative emotions or disguising them as humor. He thinks he has nothing to cry about, but he admits his relationship with his daughter makes him sad. He likes to help people, but he thinks ridiculing people is a path to changing them. He says LSD makes him happier, knowing very well that it’s an escape from the consequences of his poor life choices. And he doesn’t understand forgiveness because he has an unhealthy tendency to seek revenge. A proactive and rational person would try to address the circumstances that are leading to his unhappiness, but Jimmy is complacent with who he is, leading him to assign that blame onto others. Despite knowing that he made all of these bad decisions, Jimmy continues to make poor decisions, because they make him feel better.

Okay but is this type of generalization & judementalness the helpful response here? He's being open to discussing things and maybe this will help to bring things to his attention, it's certainly not possible to be an immediate fix but it could be a start. I dont know if it's a self awareness problem more so than a defense mechanism- when he talked about "skipping " and being called gay as a child you could see the emotion he was holding back, he clearly had an emotional response despite trying to minimize that & say "it didn't feel great but it's life & it's nothing" and so on& it's very obvious this is a factor in much if not all of his attitude about gay/trans/etc & "making fun" of people & being a "man" etc. The whole point of this discussion isn't just for Jimmy to try to gain perspective on his harmful attitudes, but it's also an opportunity to help viewers understand his attitudes and WHY he has them& I just think this discussion has revealed some things like that- broad generalizations about the "left" the "right "Trump supporters" or rather people who belong to those is sort of going backward as ultimately most of the time those claims are inherently dehumanizing & a huge part of the toxic tribalism & partisanship& reactionary politics & so on rn

Here is one possible theory: Jimmy probably had or has ADHD and is he an intelligent man but he had (and has) a ton of energy and he didn’t thrive in the typical school environment which made him feel bad about his academic performance and the teachers didn’t help him learn via a more kinetic style of learning where he could move around a lot and fidget but he might have gotten reprimanded for it a lot instead because the teachers were not open minded or trained to understand that need, so he obviously got quite discouraged and angry over it all back as a child. He used his intelligence to be a comedian type and became a “mildish” troublemaker to entertain himself and cope. He got more and more jaded over time and more black and white in his thinking. He gravitated toward that kind of harsh attitude with less leeway towards others who are “ different” than the norm because that was how he was treated by the teachers and authorities, and he in his older age has become more angry and even a bit hateful of people who he views are unfair or too lenient or empathetic with people he doesn’t understand, like or who he considers are problems in society ( who actually are not usually) and so the Republican mindset fits well with that kind of mindset. Once a disgruntled person start listening to the angry, “pissed off” Alt Right and Fox News talking points, that they think makes them feel better or feel validated, but it’s actually a very hard nosed, divisive, blocked off, binomial way ( “off or on” or “with me or against me”) way of thinking. It tends to isolate the person and so they can often just go and associate with like minded people only and live in an echo chamber of sorts and that breeds more negativity, which is too bad because that person could have had things to offer that might help to better society.

If my own similar experiences are anything to go by, it wasn't fun. This is just how he survived. He's shoving his pain down and use humor to hide it. I used the whole 'my parents loved me' concept to. The idea they wanted to help just didn't know how was how I rationalized emotional abuse and neglect. He survives similarly as well as adding this humor that is likely as toxic to him as it is to others. He doesn't want to be a victim because that makes him 'weak' but if he took it all on the chin with a grin he's the one laughing. My father had this same mentality about my bullies and he like Jimmy is from that era.

We are now witnessing the result of this past. I was 40 when I was finally diagnosed as Bipolar and after treatment, was able to have a happy life. My ADOPTED son was 14 when he was diagnosed with Autism, but because I was knowledgeable about mental illnesses , he was able to get treatment immediately…not when he’s 40.

Jimmy is probably not bipolar although his mother was which may have contributed to the trauma he experienced in childhood. His personality and behaviour has been problematic leading him to substance abuse and brushes with the law. Nothing here to suggest he is not somewhere on the spectrum of normal mental health. There is a tendency today to categorise people as mentally ill when they don't meet a very narrow idea of normality. I'm not sure you think that Jimmy has bipolar or not and has been self medicating to control this because he has not had the benefit of more modern therapy. There are a myriad of reason why people become addicted to drugs: peer pressure, curiosity, rebellion, the thrill of risk taking, alleviation of suffering, social convention and even that they will be beneficial in some way. None of these necessarily reflect an underlying mental disorder. I am three years older than Jimmy and have had bipolar disorder for over 34 years. I do not diagnose others with this condition. However people closely related to those with bipolar are more often creative and high in openness than the average person. Jimmy's creativity is expressed in his humour. Openness implies vulnerability and this can be compensated for by the defensive use of humour, a double edged sword. This is why Dr K suggests that Jimmy should consider crying at times rather that always resort to derision. Even 'snowflakes' are human and can be empathised with. I wish you and your son all the best!

This was fascinating and eye-opening. As a Trans woman, I see the commonalities between Jimmy’s struggles and my own. I grew up in the 70’s and I got bullied too. You had to act in a certain manner. I've been victimized, however, I refuse to be a victim. I additionally use humor as a defense. I understand it. We are both survivors, yet I’ve gone the path of empathy and kindness. Let me point out, although he claims he isn't a victim. The “Fuck Biden” banner says differently. The usage of words like liberals, snowflakes, along with other terms reveals that he believes he is victimized by these things. Otherwise, why would it trigger him? My heart goes out to Jimmy. I hope he figured it out and finds peace.

@Jimmy from Philly Wiped Jimmy, I get it. You will find Trans women that can’t pass. They don’t transition for all those around them. Nobody wants to be made fun of. They do this so that they don’t die. You have no idea how many of us hate ourselves. We get tunnel vision and committing suicide looks like the only real solution. The decision is transition or death. Be ridiculed or be no more. I spent over 25 years as a professional wrestler performing the most dangerous things, and just maybe it would end my torment. I wanted to die in the ring. I used drugs and alcohol pushing them past the limit. I woke up in unusual places. All I ever wanted was not to feel like this, a freak. I simply wanted to be normal, whatever that is. Now I embrace my freakdom. I spent over a decade in therapy, I even now visit a therapist. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A huge part of my life was about self-harm, then I had a family. It was time to grow up, and face my fears. Considering that suicide isn’t a choice, I only had one other alternative, transition and coincidently do it in my 50’s. I’m still learning to love myself, it’s difficult. I have good and bad days in attempts of loving myself. I recognize you wouldn’t make fun of us to our faces, but we do catch wind of such jokes from other sources. Take a look at the Dave Chappelle, controversy. I haven’t heard his jokes, I choose not to. Call that cancel culture if you would like, I call it the freedom of choice. I also have grown a thick skin at my age, sometimes I'll even laugh at a Trans joke. The bad thing about these jokes, they can trigger the dysphoria we experience. Even in those of us who have already transitioned. The dysphoria can lead us to look towards suicide. And that is the main point here. The humor leads those Trans women who aren't strong yet to harm themselves. I know this because I have run support groups, I have been helping my peers for the last 20 plus years. I have seen others break down into tears, others run out of the building melting down in fear. Dysphoria is traumatizing. Think of your darkest day, and then think of living that day every day. I have spent many a day talking my peers down from self-harm. I've changed through my transition. My life is about helping people, it's about kindness. I can't seem to hate anyone anymore, except myself. Baby step here. Jimmy, life is about lifting others. So I say peace, love, and joy to you. You ever need to talk. I’m here for you.
