Radical Speech: Dave Barry Talks About Politically Correct Campuses

Dave Barry, Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist and author of more than 30 books, is no stranger to critics trying to censor his writing. The nationally syndicated humorist has written some of our nations funniest columns-and with the First Amendment on his side, hes been winning the battle for free speech for over 25 years. This new video from FIRE features Barry discussing why freedom of expression is important to him and how todays politically correct college campuses are creating a culture of censorship that stifles humor writing and the opinions of millions of students across the country.

That is exactly what I said! With those attitudes, they cannot rightly call themselves liberal, can they?

The left's newest argument will be I treated both conservative and liberal student the same so you can't say I'm being biased. That is true to a certain degree in that the conservative student isn't being allowed to say what they want to say and the liberal student isn't being allowed to say the exact same statement. This doesn't affect the liberal student in the same way it affects the conservative student because the liberal student has no interest in saying what the conservative student says. In affect, it is still bias because the liberal student is being allowed to say whatever they want but the conservative student isn't which means the consevative student's freedom of speech is being violated and not the liberal students.

If you cannot handle people with different opinions and develop a thick skin by the time you are in a university, then it is unlikely that you will ever grow up and mature.

Admirable. Having experienced ideologically hijacked courses, fighting for balance in how social issues are presented to impressionable students would be desirable. I do not see a future for the traditional university.

Have a conversation on my cell phone or talk on a discussion list like this WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES LISTENING IN. The requirements for search warrants or phone taps were considerably lowered. So various agencies of the government are able to regularly monitor what we say, type or listen to, without our knowledge or permission or without approval by a judge based on probable cause. Personal freedoms can be limited by the government simply declaring you suspected terrorist activities.

Enjoyed hearing Dave's thoughts, but sweet Jesus, show the interviewer ask the questions and cut the God damned jungle-porn music. 1991 called, it wants its PSA style video skills back.

The droning muzak displays to me a lack of confidence in the actual content. It's really distracting to be entertained while trying to listen.

Correction, leftist says shut up... problem is language shifts and it's equivocation. Leftists identify themselves as liberals but they are actually facist. Liberal doesn't mean liberal anymore.

Being offended is a preoccupation with some groups and people. There was a time in the not too descant past where if you were offended you could tell people to stuff it. Now you delegate others, college administrators and others to exact revenge for what you perceive as an offensive statement or even a implied affront.. Who determines what is offensive and what is free expression. 1984.

There is virtually no formal requirement for them to justify this. I am not personally worried. It is the long-term principle and implications that trouble me. I am definitely not the first person to comment on this. It is well-documented elsewhere.

I really wish the score, this background-loop-drone-music, could be left out of these videos. Does the editor think we need to be entertained while listening? Perhaps I'm too easily distracted, but it feels like a lack of confidence in the actual message. Let the person speak unhindered. My 2 cents.

@TheFIREorg Yeah, it's not that the music is bad--it's just so fast in tempo that it's completely out of touch with Barry's relaxed mood. If the speaker were really quick and loud, it would work, but not with Dave Barry.

Funfact: in Britain, university faculty members *can* be fired for voicing untoward beliefs in the course of their job. Nobody seems to regard it as a bad thing, or as hypocritical, either. I can't quite get past that.

But don't blame only the liberals for this attitude. I hear lots of mean and dismissive, belittling attitudes from those that call themesleves "conservative." (Se some in this forum too.) What do these terms mean anymore? And as to one party government, that is what we have been having with the Republicans, with a couple of breaks in between. Bush imposed the Homeland Security fascism upon us, ironically moving in the Nazi direction.
