I’m an adult now but when I was around 14 or 15 (but I was petite and thin so everyone thought I looked about 11/12 years old) I was getting mail from our mailbox (we lived in the kind of neighborhood where everyone’s boxes are together at the end of the block). As I was about to head back a police officer pulled up and asked me who I was and what I was doing in that neighborhood. I told him I was getting mail and I lived there. he looked at me in disbelief (it was a quiet neighborhood of new single family homes) he said “you live here? Where? Which house?” I was getting nervous because he was giving off more and more hostility. I pointed towards the direction of my house and said “right there” as I began walking past his car towards it. At this point he jumped out his car and blocked my path “wait wait wait where are you going?” I began sweating and shaking at this point as an overwhelming feeling of helplessness washed over me. I considered running but my house, though I could see it, was too far I felt like I’d get shot if I tried it. Suddenly, I saw my front door open and my mom appeared. She began walking towards us and that’s when the cop jumped in his car and drove off. I ran towards my mom and was crying by the time I got to her I told her everything. She said I had been gone longer than it usually takes to get the mail and she felt like something was off that’s why she decided to investigate. Thank God for mom intuition! I think this cop had other more heinous intentions than arresting me but my experience is a testament to what some of these cops put people through on a daily basis. I don’t believe all cops are crooked, just some. I’ve definitely met some very nice cops throughout my life. I do, however, feel that there needs to be a more thorough screening process when someone is being interviewed before becoming a cop. Interview their family, friends, former coworkers. Usually these types of people aren’t just aggressive towards one group, you’ll usually find they’re aggressive to a certain extent towards others (family included). I believe they could all benefit from more intense training, inclusive of therapeutic crisis intervention training which goes in depth on deescalation techniques. Special education teachers are taught these techniques, cops need this training just as much as (if not even more than) they. The police doesn’t need to be refunded, they just need to stop hiring just anyone who says they want to be a cop. You’re giving them free reign with a gun for crying out loud, do your research on these people before pinning a badge of authority on them.
