Racing The Dawn | A Midsummer Night's Epic Ride

Спорт

What's better than seeing a sunset or a sunrise on your bike ride? How about seeing both in one ride? With the summer solstice comes the longest day of the year and, also, the shortest night! Hank and Conor took on the challenge of seeing who could ride the furthest on the shortest night of the year.

Check out the Dunwich Dynamo from London to Dunwich (strangely enough), and/or Ride To The Sun from Carlisle to Edinburgh. I've done the second one, and, as you can see from the presenters, after cycling overnight you have a sort of jet lag when you finish. Go for it!

Reminds me that my daughter and I did the Dunwich Dynamo a few years ago. We got to Dunwich just as the sun was coming up, downed a couple of bacon rolls and a cup of tea at the cafe, then rode home. A round trip of just on 200 miles and an epic ride that we will remember forever. Every cyclist should do something like this once in a while just for the hell of it.

Absolutely. I did the 'Dun Run' for the first time last year and really, reallly loved it. The camaraderie for the first half, then the solitude when I missed a turn and went 'off pissed' for the last third. I started before sunset (left Hackney 8pm) and finished after sunrise (arrived Dunwich 6am) but riding in total darkness in the middle of nowhere (at times I didn't even know which county I was in) was brilliant. As an experience it was definitely on par with L'Eroica and the Maratona, but in a different way from either. I'd love to see Hank and Conor ride it in 2021.

Cheers to both Hank and Conor! Special kudos to Hank's Dad. Its not easy following a small blinking red light for many hours in the dark.

With the car behind Hank, that must really have helped with seeing the full road. Also keeping him awake. Great effort made by both of them.

Would love to see Conor presenting his own version of Julian Cope's "The Modern Antiquarian" (BBC) where he rides around the UK visiting megalithic sites. Come on GCN, make it happen!

First thought was "Epic ride? That's only like 4 hours of still light enough to see. Oh, yeah...other places actually have darkness at this time of year." Loved Conor's positivity and chill attitude as well.

Thanks for another fun video. Reminds me of the Insomnia Cycle group ride I did through streets of Chicago years ago. When the bars let out, all of us riders stunned the drunken bar hoppers as we rode by. Good times.

You can tell Hank is a daddy's boy. He's always got him by his side with all his crazy challenges! You guys ride bikes that most people on this section can scarcely afford without re-mortgaging their homes. Perks of breathing and living the sport eh.
