    For young birds. Taking them out a few blocks is what I call loft flying. I always keep them feed when I loft fly them. Not fat but fed, like a half ration and feed them again when they come in. You will find they will want to fly more out away from the loft. You must make them feel like flying instead of thinking of food. I don't start training them until they fly away from the loft in any direction for 45 minutes to an hour at a time. At first you can take them a few blocks away if there not flying. I keep them fed for this so they feel like flying more instead of worrying about eating. When I start training them for races or want them to be conditioned than I stop feeding them before taking them out. I bag them in the dark morning and release them at sun up like a race. My first toss is 1 mile. All one direction. Based on that toss I take them out 3-5 miles or I may do it again at 1 mile. At 1 mile they should do 2 things. 1 - go home right away or 2 - fly around because they know where they are. I go from 1- mile to 3-5 miles to 10 miles and may do each station more than once if needed. When they come home great from 10 miles each time than I go 30 than 50 miles. 50 miles many times in different directions. From there you can go any distance. The shorter flights you can take them out every day. At 50 miles every other day or two. Thirty miles a day is nothing for a pigeon. Later they will have to be able to take 100-300 miles a week. Train with this in mind. If you want to find out who your homers and followers are ? When trained out to 10 miles let 1 bird go at a time until each one is gone at 10 miles. Your homers will go home and your followers will stick around a lot more. This will make sure each bird uses their own ability. You can expand from there if needed. I must say you could lose more birds this way, but you will end up with birds that actually have the ability and are more independent. If they don't go home right away and wait till the next bird is released than that is a follower. Followers go home with other pigeon lofts or you lose them at longer distances. Birds have to have the ability and desire to come home and the brains or luck to avoid tragedy. I have had birds walk home with a broken wing, fly home with 2 broken legs, with an open crop and hawk claw marks on there backs. Now that's desire to come home. Their is a lot of obstacles out there for them, so not coming home is not always their fault. Hope this helps some.

    what do you mean by trapping?

  • @patpolzella6746

    @patpolzella6746

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jermaine Miller Hi Jermaine, it’s a term used when you call the pigeons in from flying and they quickly go back into the loft, this is vital if you want to be successful in pigeon racing as the bird returning home from a race must go through the trap to be timed and thus calculate an average speed for the pigeon. Birds that don’t trap well can hinder your success, you don’t want them sitting on the loft hesitating to come through the trap

    Hey, thanks for all the great videos you've been posting, I love watching your content. I have a question for you regarding the the white pigeons. When you do end up pairing them up for breeding more, will you still let the breeders out to fly and train, or just keep them in the breeding boxes? This is something i'm still trying to figure out for when i get my birds. thanks!

  • @Rocky.Ridge.Pigeons

    @Rocky.Ridge.Pigeons

    Dave Donovan Hey Dave, it sounds like you’re getting some white dove release birds soon. A lot of people when they purchase older birds will wait until they are on eggs for 10 days before they release them for the first time. But other than hawks there is no risk of losing them if they are already settled to your loft. Especially the hen can be taken out on tosses during the day. A lot of people race this way because the hen and will return fast. I had a pair of rollers that I would let fly for about an hour a day after their eggs hatched and had no problem with that. I won’t be letting my white racing homers out during breeding because the breeding cage that I am using is not in the loft that they are settled to.So I guess it depends on your set up and how you are doing your breeding. Best of luck.. Thanks for watching my videos.

  • @Rocky.Ridge.Pigeons

    Well it would depend on how old they are but assuming that you get 1 to 3 month old I would keep them in for at least 3 weeks and start getting them on a routine where you whistle before you feed them. The first time you release them do it just before sunset and they must be hungry! After 30 min. or so start to whistle and they will come in. It's good also that you have some sort of a trap in case all don't come in. During the first few weeks make sure they can see their surroundings - this will help a lot. Always release when hungry and if you get older ones increase your holding time. Best of luck.👍
